I watched Johnson being interviewed by Marr, and was in high hopes that he would manage 15 minutes without lying.

Well he so nearly managed it until the last minute. Then out it popped.

Poor old Johnson, what a cross to bear, never managing to open your mouth or putting pen to paper without lying.

Is the Leader of the Opposition privy to the same level of briefing from the scientific advisors as the Cabinet to enable him to respond in that level of detail, if so you’re right he should have come off the fence.

varian Mon 04-Jan-21 20:44:46

Ed Davey gave a clear lead well before Starmer or Johnson

LauraNorder Mon 04-Jan-21 22:30:50

Much easier to come out with all the answers when you don’t have to be accountable for the consequences.
In this pandemic there don’t seem to be clear answers anywhere and government are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. We want Christmas. Should have cancelled Christmas. We want our children to be educated. Should have closed schools.
No government have come out of this well.
Please don’t say that NZ have done okay, they are an island miles from anywhere with a very small population. No comparison.

You can’t compare size etc but you can compare style of management and decision making.

Casdon Mon 04-Jan-21 23:15:03

Germany is comparable and has done much better - 90m population and less than half the deaths of the UK. Mind you I wouldn’t dare argue with Angela Merkel either, if she said stay at home I think most people would do it.

Oopsadaisy1 Tue 05-Jan-21 07:29:14

Many Germans are law abiding to an extreme compared with the Brits. Newspaper Headlines today say that Business Leaders are ‘Dismayed’ that we are in Lockdown, really?
Time for Boris to stop listening to the ever changing Scientific advice and just do what has to be done, problem is his MPs would vote against it.
My DDs other half spent all day yesterday being trained to carry out testing on the school pupils at his school, that was going to take all week as they are only allowed to do it for 2 hours a day so that they don’t get too exposed, a useful skill to have I imagine, but school closed now except for certain workers children.

Pantglas2 Tue 05-Jan-21 08:25:18

Germany should be compared with Turkey on a population count and Turkey have only two thirds of their deaths so the Germans not doing as well in this second wave.

Belgium are still ahead by a long shot on the deaths per million of population and until the weekend France had the most positive cases, now it’s UK.

Lucretzia Tue 05-Jan-21 08:38:29

Germany had a disastrous December

www.dw.com/en/germany-covid-death-toll-almost-trebles-in-december/a-56114526

They actually had more deaths than we did in the last 2 weeks

www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/02/covid-world-map-which-countries-have-the-most-coronavirus-cases-and-deaths

This constant comparison with other countries is somewhat pointless. There are many reasons why some countries fare better than others

Gingster Tue 05-Jan-21 08:52:59

I had to turn it off . Can’t stand the constant interruptions along with Boris’ stammering and waffling. Time after time I have defended him but I’m afraid I’ve had enough.

If it’s so boring - don’t read the thread. .....

Casdon Tue 05-Jan-21 09:18:21

They clamped down much sooner each time the numbers rose though Lucretzia, and it’s now falling again in Germany. I think it’s actually a very good comparator for this country and the rest of Europe - and they have over 20m more people than we do.

I see that a couple ofTories have submitted letters of no confidence in Johnson to the 1922 committee.

Even the Tories find stomaching his lies difficult.

Firecracker123 Tue 05-Jan-21 09:37:38

Who why don't you name them. Remainers or grudge holders I bet.

What are you scared of, Firecracker?

What is the significance of 'Remainers'?

You've got your Brexit. No-one can take it away from you. Why can't Johnson be challenged for his corruption and incompetence continual lying?

Blimey, why can’t leavers let Brexit go! It isn’t all about brexit.

Johnson’s lies and corruption should be a concern for everyone regardless of political party.

there is a call for the £22bn audit on the test and trace, and so there should be.

Firecracker123 Tue 05-Jan-21 17:52:20

I'll ask again why are you not naming them if they exist.

I'll ask again why are you not naming them if they exist.

I would quite happily have provided their names, but your belligerency does not sit well, so I suggest you find out for yourself. Very easy to find.

Firecracker123 Tue 05-Jan-21 18:14:50

I don't think you can name them because they don't exist. If they do exist why not name them. I've had a look and I can't find them, I had a look this morning. Why so bashful ?

Oh that’s interesting that makes another Tory. The ones I’m talking about are backbenchers who entered in 2019 on the back of Johnson.

More lies
At today's press conference, the Prime Minister said that the Government have put "another £12 billion" into NHS mental health care. Only £500 million was announced back in November.

Boris Johnson faces Tory revolt over lockdown as MPs submit no confidence letters in PM
New Forest West MP Sir Desmond Swayne said he was in "despair" at the new lockdown and the rules were "enough to make your blood boil".

He told Express.co.uk: "The existing strategy comes at an enormous social and economic cost.

"As we've seen, it's not very effective."

Yesterday two Tory MPs elected in last year's general election under the leadership of Mr Johnson and his pledge to "get Brexit done" were thought to have submitted letters of no-confidence in the Prime Minister to Graham Brady, the chair of the 1922 committee. Jan5 2021
