ug that it false news. I can see why you want it to be true, but I expect by now you understand the truth?

Namsnanny that’s exactly what I mean. Germany looks after Germany, always has and always will. It gets more vaccine, why in the EU? Because that’s how Germany works. It looks after number one and be blowed to anyone else.

I think we all need to be very careful of describing the leader of Germany as a dictator, given their history. Especially as she has been voted into office 4 times in a row and has already said she plans not to run in this year's election.

I can almost hear you rubbing your hands together OP, at the chance of showing something, just something is better here then in the EU. Sadly this one won't do it.

Firstly, although not in the OP it has been mentioned elsewhere, we could have done exactly what we have done if we were still in the EU.

Secondly, member states were in no way obliged to take part in the EU’s joint vaccine procurement scheme. The EU has very limited competences for public health under its founding treaties: it can take action only to “support, coordinate or supplement the actions of the Member States”. The EU member states in this case voluntarily decided to opt into the joint procurement scheme.

So all another 'untrue' bent banana story which, rather like Johnson's account, will crash and burn over time.

Now I do how you will offer a correction wherever you can.

Bluebelle I totally respect your opinion, I just don’t share it, I wasn’t even comparing our government which is a completely different subject and not relevant in this discussion. I wasn’t even a leaver, I voted remain but nonetheless that’s no longer relevant because we’ve left. As I saw it, this discussion is purely about Angela Merkel and I don’t like her style of leadership. That’s okay because she’s not my leader. She was brought up partly in Eastern Germany under communism and I think it comes over in her style of leadership. She’s been leader for many years too, I think it could be thirteen and she shows no signs of leaving which makes me think she’s a bit of a dictator. She absolutely has not done everything right by a very long chalk. 2015 was the worst year when she unilaterally invited a million people to go to Germany and then wanted every other country to take a share of people. Where was the consultation about that? That is the action of a dictator in my opinion. Germany needs new blood in my opinion. She’s had her day and should retire in my opinion. Anyway it doesn’t matter, she’s not my leader. If you want to discuss our government that’s fine, and all it’s done in this pandemic, rightly or wrongly. But I think Merkel has had her day and should retire. My opinion only.

Not from what I have read Bluebelle The EU is in a mess over vaccine roll out.
Also Spain Greece Italy have complained bitterly about the allocation. German states were given the same amount each as these countries had per country.
Meaning Germany had up to 10 times more vaccine than others.
Sorting this out has delayed the actual delivery of it.
Nothing to do with sovereignty, all to do with unwieldy bureaucratic machine.

Smileless2012 Tue 12-Jan-21 13:43:12

Presumably they'll have to settle for the EU's allocation Lucretzia if they can't afford to by extra.

Lucretzia Tue 12-Jan-21 13:40:19

I'm not a Leaver

I thought the EU were going to engage together and roll out the vaccines for all

This seems to be another Italy type moment.

Nothing to see here. Elected leader of country decides what her country needs and gets it done. Shock. We are out of the EU now Urmonstongran, maybe you need to get over it? grin

I think that our Leavers need to continually work themselves up into a state of shock about the pernicious doings of the EU to justify their vote.

I can't blame them entirely, we do it to them in reverse... grin

Lucretzia Tue 12-Jan-21 13:28:16

What about the poorer countries of the EU?

BlueBelle Tue 12-Jan-21 13:26:41

maddy totally disagree with you I think Angela Merkel is an excellent leader and knocks spots off our shower
I think this is a whipped up I told you so storm to try and discredit the EU wherever possible

felice Tue 12-Jan-21 13:23:14

Belgium started vaccinating in December, not sure what all the fuss is about, we are all sovereign nations after all.

EU or no EU, Merkel will do as she likes. She’s only a team player as long as it suits her purpose. Otherwise forget it, it’s her way or no way. Thank God she’s not our leader. I’ve never had any time for her at all.

paddyanne Tue 12-Jan-21 12:21:53

Shock horror ,being in the EU doesn't mean you cant make decisions that suit your own country....Boris do you still not understand that? EU countries are soveriengn !!

Urmstongran Tue 12-Jan-21 11:36:42

So much for unity eh?

“EU reminds members to toe the line on unilateral vaccine plan
The EU is struggling to keep countries aligned with its vaccine strategy, as governments start to break rank and seek side-deals for extra jabs.

The European Commission is now urging ministers to stick to the plan to negotiate unilaterally.

Last week, Germany ordered 30 million extra doses of the Pfizer vaccine on top of its allocation from the EU’s haul of 600 million jabs while Cyprus reportedly asked Israel for additional doses.”

‘I’m alright Jack springs to mind’.

I must admit to being somewhat surprised as Angela Merkel had, in a spirit of co-operation, handed Germany’s vaccination programme over to Brussels.

Who ordered the sneaky side deal then?
