Hilarious! I knew an old lady years ago who always referred to our local council as "the corporation !"

Blossoming Mon 01-Feb-21 21:37:07

grannysyb my elderly aunts always referred to them as ‘the Corpy’!

The Corporation was the local Council and were also responsible for water distribution and sewage disposal until The Water Act 1973.

That is why a drink of water was known as Corporation Pop.

Council estates were known as "Corporation schemes"

We had Corporation buses in my home town. And very good they were, too...Sadly, Maggie T put an end to them.

NannyC2 - about UK birth certificates... when my children were born we took them to be registered. We gave the registrar all the required info which he wrote down in his book. It was a manual process.

I think one of us signed the book to say it was correct (but I may mis-remember this). I remember clearly that having shown the record to us to check, he (our local registrar was a man), copied onto what is commonly referred to as a "long-form" birth certificate.

This states it is a "certified copy"- which it is in that he copied it from the register of births onto the form for us to take away. He then certified that this was a true copy by signing and dating.

I do hope this helps. I know someone mentioned it earlier but I thought I'd lay it out in stages so you can see why it's called this..

I obviously only know that the certificates I have of my children's births do truly and accurately reflect their coming into this world. I cannot speak for yours.

Please can we look again at the OP and see if we can think of any good things Trump has achieved over the last 4 years?

No major wars and he made friends with that idiot in North Korea. Probably they could see themselves in each other. We were on a cruise with a bunch of Trump supporters and they thought he had done a lot of good for employment. We kept our respective gobs shut.

He reformed the VA, the veterans healthcare. Which is something past presidents failed to accomplish.

He also supported farmers impacted by his trade wars and historical floods.

The above actions grew his base substantially.

Mmmn. I'm not sure the Veteran health info is actually correct.

Barack Obama was responsible for the reform that created CHOICE in 2014.
Trump did expand this in 2018 (the Mission Act) but almost no more veterans have been able to use private health care. I read before Christmas that it wasn't working - they were being turned away from private doctors.
I don't think there's an obligation for them to be seen.

I don't remember reading about the other things - flooding and mitigation of trade wars...
Interesting. Do you have a link please?

Trump took the credit for a lot of things that happened during Obama’s administration. His motto is if you say it often and loudly people will believe it.

Is the Republican Party on the side of the white supremacists?

I wouldn’t have pegged him as a racist whatever his many faults.

Jane43 Thu 04-Feb-21 12:21:52

At a recent GOP closed meeting QAnon supporter Marjorie Taylor Greene was given a standing ovation. Trump recently called her ‘a rising star’ of the GOP. There are numerous FaceBook videos in which she expresses racist views, including Islamophobia and anti-semitism. To me this indicates Trump is a racist.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, whose past remarks endorsing violence against Democratic leaders and espousing conspiracy theories about mass shootings may cost her committee assignments, addressed the GOP conference Wednesday evening to express remorse for those comments.

She told Republican colleagues she believes school shootings are real and called them "awful," and apologized for her past support for QAnon conspiracy theories,
according to two sources familiar with the meeting.

Greene's private comments to her colleagues -- who also have the power to strip her of her committee assignments -- stand in stark contrast to her public comments, where she has refused to back away from her past statements in the face of criticism

There is ample evidence on line to show that Trump is a racist. For example he called senator Elizabeth Warren ‘Pocahontas’ - she has Cherokee heritage. Not to mention his disparaging remarks about Mexicans. Besides being a racist he mocked a disabled reporter when he tried to ask a question at one of his press conferences. Yet he will still be acquitted after his trial in the senate which starts next week. He has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

I take it we are struggling to find many good things in this presidency then...?

Jane43 Thu 11-Feb-21 04:07:21

I only have Freeview but it is on Al Jazeera, channel 235. I watched some tonight and the Democrats have put together a wonderful case for the prosecution. Of course not enough Republican Senators have enough moral fibre to vote in accordance with the overwhelming evidence. I read that some Republican senators such as Josh Hawley aren’t even listening to the evidence, he has his feet up on the seat in front of him and is reading. I switched off when Senator Mike Lee for some reason was throwing his toys out of the pram because he was quoted as having answered his phone to Trump and handed it over to the Senator Trump wanted to speak to. He wanted it striking out despite the incident having been quoted in several newspapers and he even spoke about it on tv.

One good thing, the day it ended and he and his free loading family moved out of The White House.
