26 arrests last night, flares being let off and general chaos in the West End. Only it didn't seem so long ago that she was asking people from England not to travel to Scotland.

sad

Casdon Mon 21-Jun-21 10:53:56

Surely we all know that if this match had been in Scotland, the English fans would have gone up there? It’s not Nicola Sturgeon’s fault.

I also can’t see the difference between Scottish fans travelling to London, and English fans from other parts of England doing exactly the same either, both are equally likely to spread Covid - or not. Am I missing something important?

GrannyGravy13 Mon 21-Jun-21 10:58:50

Casdon I love football, but in times of Covid restrictions fans from any teams should not travel.

How would it be if all the GN posters with family overseas suddenly decided sod it we are off on a plane to see our loved ones…

I can just imagine the posts…

GrannyGravy13 Mon 21-Jun-21 11:02:15

Billy Gilmour tested positive, if one child in a school bubble tests positive the whole bubble has to isolate, regardless?

I guess it really is one rule for some…

Remember Bill Shankley’s famous quote when asked if football was a matter of life and death when he replied “It’s more than that!” Footie fans are fanatical.

..and yet NS did what people say she should have and Johnson didn't.

If I was a suspicious person, I'd think that some people want to blame NS for the wrongdoing of anybody in Scotland shock

No different to those on GN who blame the PM for all and sundry…

It is totally fair to blame the pm for things that he lied about, and got absolutely wrong all of his own accord and to favour his friends and ERG, etc.

Nicola Sturgeon could not stop them from going if they were hell bent on going against rules and her advice.

This is not about 'Scottish' fans going in droves against rules and advice, and the same would be said if English fans had gone to Edinburgh or Glascow.

I re-read the OP again twice and still came to the same conclusion: that was exactly what it was about confused

Should Nicola Sturgeon have discouraged Scottish Football fans without tickets from travelling to London?

Callistemon Mon 21-Jun-21 11:38:32

Yes, she did and they still went despite having no tickets.

^the same would be said if English fans had gone to Edinburgh or Glascow.^But they didn't.
confused

Alegrias1 Mon 21-Jun-21 11:38:42

I think you are being a bit obtuse Call

Callistemon Mon 21-Jun-21 11:39:30

Why?

It seems perfectly clear.

The OP asked a question.

Lucca Mon 21-Jun-21 11:40:00

Quite simply in newer to the thread title question. ..she did.

Alegrias1 Mon 21-Jun-21 11:40:54

the same would be said if English fans had gone to Edinburgh or Glascow. But they didn't.

The Welsh went to Azerbaijan. The English went to Portugal.

Nobody started threads about how Mark Drakeford / Boris Johnson should have told them not to.

Callistemon Mon 21-Jun-21 11:42:39

Which is exactly what I said.
Yes, she did and they still went despite having no tickets.

Describing a hypothetical situation about English fans travelling to Scotland without tickets is a red herring as it did not happen.

maddyone Mon 21-Jun-21 11:47:13

To be honest, I think football matches shouldn’t be open to fans at all, and no fans should be travelling anywhere. That includes to Portugal, Wembley or anywhere else. Ascot shouldn’t have had crowds there last week either. We’re told to only meet outdoors with up to 30 people, and then thousands attend sporting events!

Witzend Mon 21-Jun-21 11:48:17

She surely wouldn’t have risked anything bound to be so hugely unpopular!
Other things maybe, but *football is a virtually religion to so many, and therefore pretty much untouchable.

*I was sorely tempted to add an expletive there, but it was far too rude for Gransnet. ?

Alegrias1 Mon 21-Jun-21 11:48:31

OK, in words of one syllable.

People like to blame NS for things that they don't blame other leaders for, because she is Scottish and/or female. Using comparisons and analogies shows that assertion to be true.

Sorry, not all words one syllable.

You're perfectly at liberty to start threads about that if you wish.

I do hope the Welsh didn't trash Baku. Only a few hundred fans with tickets travelled there and, of course, had to take a PCR test before returning to Wales.
Said one fan:
"We've got to get a private PCR test and get the result before we arrive in Baku. They also need proof of the tickets for the Euros and that's how you get the visa for entry."

Quite a different scenario.

timetogo2016 Mon 21-Jun-21 11:54:02

Nothing and no-one will stop football fans doing what they want imo.
And i wouldn`t like to be in the police force who try their best to tackle the idiotic bunch of idiots.

Callistemon Mon 21-Jun-21 11:56:32

As I said (several times now) Yes, she did tell them not to go but they still went.

It's not me who is blaming her.

However, the Scottish fans ignored her and went anyway - is that because she is female?

Callistemon Mon 21-Jun-21 11:57:05

And Scottish like them?

Alegrias1 Mon 21-Jun-21 11:57:10

Ah right. So Nicola Sturgeon should have grounded all flights, stopped the trains and erected barbed wire along the border because some eejits might cause trouble, but Boris was quite right to lift restrictions on going to Portugal for a few weeks so that the English fans could go without quarantine.

Kalu Mon 21-Jun-21 11:58:06

As your question has been answered, she did. What other measures would you have taken, were you in her position OP?

Casdon Mon 21-Jun-21 11:58:41

I agree Alegrias1. I also agree with GrannyGravy13, in the current situation fans shouldn’t travel from one country to another. However unless a law is imposed (which isn’t going to happen unless there’s another lockdown) fans from all the nations will travel.
It is double standards to blame NS, when England have fortunately for them got all their games at home and Scotland and Wales haven’t. But we all know that England fans wouldn’t behave any differently if they had away games, and pretending that’s not the case is disingenuous.

Callistemon Mon 21-Jun-21 11:59:11

No, she should have got the bricks and cement out and build a wall.
Singlehandedly.

This thread is becoming ridiculous.

Callistemon Mon 21-Jun-21 12:01:26

Casdon I agree, it shouldn't be happening.
