“Recollections may vary”. Harry and Meghan (again - I know!)

This may be a pot shot too far, now they seem to be including the Queen in their self- righteous whingeing.
(Not that I am biased)
Apparently Duke and Duchess of Sussex believe the Queen failed to take “full ownership” of the race allegations made in their interview with Oprah Winfrey, according to the authors of the unauthorised biography Finding Freedom.
A “friend of the couple” (unnamed, of course) has apparently told Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand that the Queen’s lack of action had prevented the Duke and Duchess from moving on from the claims.
The source also suggested that the Queen’s assertion that “recollections may vary” had not gone down well.
(It did however rank IMHO as one of HM’s all-time greatest bons mots )
The Queen has until now been one of the only senior members of the Royal family to escape the Sussexes’ criticism, but this new epilogue to Finding Freedom, published in People magazine in the US, suggests that the Duke and Duchess feel frustrated that the Duke’s grandmother did not follow through with her promise to address their concerns.
It says: “The Queen’s ‘recollections may vary’ comment ‘did not go unnoticed’ by the couple, who a close source said were ‘not surprised’ that full ownership was not taken
Just one question, if this book is “unauthorised”, does it or does it not reflect their views? Or is it an example of letting somebody else put words in their mouths so that they can deny them afterwards if necessary? All these “unnamed friends,” and “close sources” - aye, right.

Australians will keep calling her Meegan as the name is pronounced Down Under. Or Meeghan, take your pick.

There is no hope.

Lemmon drissel! That did make me laugh Alegrias1
I have a surname that is constantly misspelled, and a Christian name that people often get wrong, but unless it involves documents, I rarely correct people. I appreciate that we are all different, but personally, people getting my name wrong doesn't bother me in the least.

SueDonim Sun 03-Oct-21 16:37:28

Drissel? You mean I’ve been asking for Lemon Dribble cake all this time and no one told me?

Alegrias1 Sun 03-Oct-21 15:32:09

LauraNorder

Did someone mention cake?

It was lemmon drissel.

I'm making my own spelling decisions now.

eazybee Sun 03-Oct-21 15:29:35

Who cares?
My name was misspelt on my NHS records and I was not aware until I took possession of the card when I was 18. Far too complicated to change so I accept it; people comment on the old-fashioned spelling, and it Does Not Bother Me.

Actually the name with an "h' is said to be Irish. It has a different meaning to the Welsh name and seems to have been made popular by a book of Gaelic names used in the US. More here
www.behindthename.com/name/meghan/comments/history
Is it then racist to claim it is Welsh?

LauraNorder Sun 03-Oct-21 15:24:45

Did someone mention cake?

SueDonim Sun 03-Oct-21 15:17:31

I had no idea the Duchess of Sussex was Welsh! You learn something new every day. grin

maddyone Sun 03-Oct-21 15:11:35

I haven’t a clue what contermaschious means, but I do know what cake is. The queen is said to eat afternoon tea, I think I’ll join her. It’ll have to be a biscuit or a scone though since I don’t have any cake. Better get baking next week I think.

Alegrias1 Sun 03-Oct-21 14:52:12

Just before I do - there's a Scots word - contermaschious.

Alegrias1 Sun 03-Oct-21 14:50:09

Jings, I have no life.

I'm going to have some cake.

SueDonim Sun 03-Oct-21 14:46:04

That depends on your reason, Anniebach. If there’s a valid reason, it will be neither of those things. On the other hand, it could just be plain rude.

Lucca Sun 03-Oct-21 14:39:12

But still not answering the question ….you said you had a reason ?

Anniebach Sun 03-Oct-21 14:30:42

Alegrias1 has posted an opinion, I am either childish or spiteful.. take your pick .

SueDonim Sun 03-Oct-21 14:05:23

Because on this thread people either do it on purpose to denigrate and insult the person they are talking about, because they believe they know better how a person should be spelling their own name.

My DD’s friend is called Meghan. Can Gransnetters please advise as to whether I should inform her that she’s been spelling her own name wrong for 25 years. Also should I from now on write ‘Megan’ in birthday cards to her so she gets the message? I wouldn’t want to be thought ill-mannered, rude or spiteful, though!

Alegrias1 Sun 03-Oct-21 13:01:10

Oh, I'm sorry, was our conversation keeping you awake?

jaylucy Sun 03-Oct-21 12:55:51

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Josianne Sun 03-Oct-21 12:51:22

Oh, ok.

Alegrias1 Sun 03-Oct-21 12:42:28

Its one of the mysteries of the ages.....

Lucca Sun 03-Oct-21 12:33:40

Josianne

Wrong, as far as I am concerned, as I have a friend called Megan and that is what comes on my phone choice after typing Me .......
I'm afraid I never preview or re read (as is sometimes very evident).
And on the Strictly thread the Judi/Judy insults are taken in good (ish) humour as intended?

Anniebach has said she writes Megan rather than Meghan for a reason, so it is not accidental. I have asked what the reason is….

Alegrias1 Sun 03-Oct-21 11:40:00

Well its possible Josianne but I don't think so, not in this case.

Josianne Sun 03-Oct-21 11:38:56

Maybe we accept mispellings of celebs' names because most of them play roles other than themselves and it all gets a bit confused. When it comes to royals we expect them to actually BE themselves more. So Kate or Catherine can only be Katherine, whereas Meghan could be Megan or even Rachel/Rachael because she is now a celeb? If you get my waffle.

Alegrias1 Sun 03-Oct-21 11:30:07

Understood Josianne.

Josianne Sun 03-Oct-21 11:29:08

Apologies Alegrias. My use of the word "wrong" was to mirror the end of your sentence. Sorry for not quoting you, even though they've got it wrong.

Alegrias1 Sun 03-Oct-21 11:24:37

But the woman's name is Meghan, and choosing to repeatedly and consistently call her by a completely different spelling of her name just shows the contempt people feel for her.

Its childish, just like writing "wrong" and thinking its an unassailable argument.

I have a real name that people often spell incorrectly. I generally live with it because its not a big deal. But if people know what my name is, and decide to use a completely different spelling because they think they're entitled, they're going to get told.
