Please tell me the government aren’t planning to do this and it’s just a joke…..

Smileless2012 Fri 17-Sept-21 08:54:30

I've never stopped using imperial measurementsblush.

Polarbear2 Fri 17-Sept-21 08:55:18

Dead cat. Also another move to try and create a divide between young and old. This Gov loves to create division. It distracts from what’s really going on.

Just wait till Patel brings up the death penalty again now that we're out of the EU

GrannyGravy13 Fri 17-Sept-21 08:57:41

Nothing wrong with having a choice surely?

Why bother? Anybody still measuring in ells? Paying in groats?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 17-Sept-21 09:03:20

I am not in the least bothered Alegrias1 but reading the two threads this morning there are quite a few posters who are…

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Sept-21 09:04:26

I'm botheto

Over the decades we've developed a mix of the two systems and I imagine it will stay that way. I can't see many businesses seriously taking up Imperial measures.

This sort of 'freedom' nonsense often appeals to certain sectors of society, usually older, less well-off and poorly educated.

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Sept-21 09:12:09

No idea where that came from, sorry!

Blossoming Fri 17-Sept-21 09:13:07

I don’t really know any Imperial units of measure. As a student I was taught metric and at work I used metric. If this were to happen it would push up the cost of living (again). There are are lot of industries that would have to replace costly machinery. Mind you my ex colleagues in tech would make a killing re-writing software to cope grin

Snooty, much?

Exactly Riverwalk.

That's why I'm bothered GG13. Its playing to the gallery and getting in another dig at those nasty Europeans who wouldn't let us put the Crown on our pint glasses hmm

My children are 43 & 39 - I still have the little card tags from their hospital cots and the weights are in kilos.

Blossoming Fri 17-Sept-21 09:15:30

Alegrias1 grin groats, bushels, pecks, rods, perches!

Isn’t this just today’s ‘have a go at the government’ offering, only this time with a particularly rude, insulting comment about Brexit voters(MaizieD 8.23am) ?

It’s a bit of a non story really, although it’s a long overdue assurance that shop keepers and market stall holders won’t be prosecuted for displaying their wares in Imperial.

Except we could have put crowns on our glasses all along. Just not used them to certify the amount in the glass.

Riverwalk Fri 17-Sept-21 09:22:39

No not snooty Urmston - just how I see it.

Do you know many people under the age of say 65 who think in terms of freedom when referring to imperial measures, or educated people who hanker after buying potatoes in pounds?

We have always been free to think in pounds and ounces but it didn't make sense for one EU country, the UK, to have a different system, considering trade, science etc. Apart from the US, almost every country in the world is metric.

Urmstongran Fri 17-Sept-21 09:25:25

I don’t suppose we’ll ever go back to gallons for our fuel at the pumps ...

£1.30 per litre sounds cheaper than £5.80 a gallon!!

Cost of recalibration of pumps.

Oh and by the time that was done petrol and diesel would be illegal on the road.

Perhaps the British Thermal Unit?

JaneJudge Fri 17-Sept-21 09:26:06

It saves me asking for 568ml of lager when at pub now, that was a massive imposition. Coming over here changing our pints to 568 millimetres, what a liberty

ayse Fri 17-Sept-21 09:26:39

MaizieD

USA don't use quite the same measures as us. Try using a US recipe.

I don't think it's anything to do with the US. It's just about appealing to the insular Brexit voters.

I agree at least with cake making! I have a set of Australian cup measures that fit in with the USA, as far as I know.

Yesterday the announcement of the USA/UK/Australia pact re nuclear submarines is rather concerning.

I do still cook in lbs and ozs and think of height in feet and inches, distance in yards and miles, also babies weights in lbs and ozs however my children and DGC have all learnt in metric grammes, kilograms, cms and kilometres and it would be very difficult to reverse it for everyone that age. I would not like to go back to pounds shillings and pence now as it would be very cumbersome and probably expensive for the Royal Mint to produce the coins again. Hopefully we can stay with the mix.

Urmstongran Fri 17-Sept-21 09:29:20

Time for another thread on AUKUS anyone? I like the name.
A for Australia
UK for us
US for America

Clever. a name that identifies it’s grouping.

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Sept-21 09:31:43

But the government make it SO EASY to have a go at them.

Frost telling us that the Brexit project is going really well while the supply lines are collapsing and we can't fill all the available jobs. But never mind, pounds and ounces, Crowns on the pint glasses and lots of British values on TV. Hooray!! And, apparently, the ability to put the initials letters of countries together to make up nonsense words.

(I saw your post about the crowns on pint glasses, thanks MaizieD)

MaizieD's comment was about people who think a return to Imperial measures is long overdue. If those people also happen to be Brexit voters...
