Petrol queues reported now on BBC news

I’ve managed to fill up this morning thanks to our village f/b alerts, which I rarely do, but I volunteer to drive clients to medical appointments and have at least four this week, maybe more yet. I can afford to do that, some can’t and put in £10 or £20 when they çan, that’s who’ll be hit most by this and those like Jane if there’s no fuel there’s no plan b.

My heart fell yesterday watching Boris on an extended programme. He talked about how he has now decided that he does not want to bring in the people who he was going to give temporary visas too so he will not do it. He wants the haulage jobs to go to British workers as he says that makes more sense.

It seems everything is almost back to normal up North and also Cheshire way but London and the South east are still having a horrendous time. I am living in South east and for over a week almost all petrol stations are dry and closed.
The army are supposed to start doing the petrol deliveries starting from tomorrow I am panicking now as my fuel has almost gone and I cannot even drive around looking for somewhere open.
When Andrew Marr had Boris on this morning he would not give a precise answer to anything I just hope the army gets to my town a.s.a.p. it is beyond a joke now.

I am in the S E, have just driven past a Shell Garage with fuel, and currently waiting whilst DH puts diesel in at a BP Garage.

I have managed to get some, by a massive stroke of luck I drove by my normal petrol station and noticed there was diesel and not much of a queue so I queued for 10 minutes and managed to fill up. My legs felt like jelly and lots of people looked really stressed out. My husband wen out and filled his after me and there wasn't a queue at all. It was chaos earlier, so I don't know if things are easing or not or whether we were just lucky

Grannygravy13 where in the S.E are you? it is a large area.
I went further afield and drove to Beaconsfield area a large filling station and most pumps out of action and one long queue also police had to be called because fighting broke out and nobody wants to be around that. I have heard it is now closed and empty.

I went past my local petrol station yesterday and it is still taped up and closed off as no deliveries have been made in five days, I said to my son this is not right it looks so ghostly seeing it like that everyday .

They have just said on the news that Essex has has been used to train the army to distribute to the rest of the country so they haven't had the same supply issues. One of my sons in Kent has said it has been terrible there too.

Glad you got some JaneJudge. My legs felt like jelly too when I was in the big queue, I felt so anxious.

We have the army horses in my location and they are a wonderful sight to see being exercised around our streets, but I would love even more to see army personnel driving a tanker to the petrol forecourts in my London area. I'm desperate for fuel, I'll be on fumes after tomorrow.

No need to apologise. I wondered where in Essex they're being trained and where doesn't have the same supply issues. Essex is a big county, so what happens in Thurrock is probably very different from the other parts.

So, in the days of military service, not so very very long ago, young lads in their early 20s were trained by the army to drive military trucks and passed their tests while training. This must have meant that after their year in service there was a good supply of HGV drivers back out in the workforce, and many might have gone into truck driving. Now there is no longer military service there are no contingency plans to cover this happening and I assume that is why training is of paramount importance. All over Europe actually.

I assume you mean National Service, Josianne. That ended in 1960 - sixty years ago. That is a very long time ago to those who will be training now - and irrelevant unless you think we will be going to war. Anything is possible under this government and sadly, would not suprise me.

The reason why training is of paramount importance is because we haven't been doing it. The Conservatives have been in power for 11 years and, more than any of us, knew what the consequences of Brexit would be. Why didn't they plan for this. Why do they never plan for anything?

We've still got some petrol coupons somewhere from 1974 - after all these years, how the world is still reliant on oil.

Oh yes, that's it, National Service in the UK PippaZ.
(My fiancé did his French "service militaire" in the 80's so I was thinking of then. It didn't end until until 1997 so a long time later.)
Anyway, perhaps a new kind of voluntary service could be introduced, not necessarily with the object of going to war, where other skills are learned. But then I suppose many 18 year olds would be interested.

We've got brewers dray horses at Beamish. Perhaps they could deliver a few barrels of fuel...

(Mind you, they'd have to be transported to the south in a very large horsebox needing an HGV licence to drive it...)

I'm sure DH would rise to the challenge - even at his advanced age, as would many ex-Forces HGV drivers who may be retired!

I can vouch for the growth boosting power of horse manure..

Just don't use it fresh, it'll kill your crops rather than boost them. Leave it to mature for 6 months..
