Day after day there are articles like this in the worlds press.

Aveline Sat 02-Oct-21 16:14:00

Every winter is a winter of discontent to our media. Only bad news sells or increases viewer numbers.

Aveline

Every winter is a winter of discontent to our media. Only bad news sells or increases viewer numbers.

That isn’t our media ?

That is my point!

But it is a British journalist. From the Guardian.

Shaming isn't it? But at least he didn't mention the thousands of pigs apparently liable to be 'culled' next week for lack of abattoir workers...
British journalists have done their fair share of running down the US and this country is now a sitting duck. Too much power corrupts and it has done so here as much as anywhere else.

Another view by a foreign outlet

London (CNN Business)Worker shortages have left UK service stations empty, created gaps on supermarket shelves and are forcing farms to cull pigs. Even the finance industry is starting to suffer. The situation could get much worse this winter if the British government doesn't relax its Brexit immigration rules, business leaders say.

Here's one from France - means 'the tomorrows that are disillusioning' - I think.

And no Christmas Ocado slots left here, boooo. Disaster! sad.

The NZ press are certainly reporting all these difficulties so my daughter told me on Saturday morning.

trisher Sat 02-Oct-21 16:49:27

If we carry that quote on is Johnson the "sun of York"?
"Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this sun of York"
Bet he'd love to be. Maybe it's all a devious plan to show he can sort things (but I think it's more likely a massive cock up)

Josianne Sat 02-Oct-21 16:50:52

Just chuck the whole array on the table!

Aveline Sat 02-Oct-21 16:51:52

Doomed. We're all doomed. Again!

Smileless2012 Sat 02-Oct-21 16:57:30

Looks that way Avelinehmm

It is awful, but as someone posted up thread, bad news sells papers. Yet my friends around the world say it isn’t all roses where they are. Two US friends say they have heard more about Britain since Covid because it hides the situation where they are. One is desperate not to be ill as she can’t afford more insurance.

Josianne Sat 02-Oct-21 17:03:55

I think all countries have their different problems.
My family in New Zealand say they feel like hermits and despite feeling smug initially are now finding the situation onerous.

Zoejory Sat 02-Oct-21 17:04:01

And to top it all off the latest Yougov poll has given the Tories an 8 point lead!

Whitewavemark2 Sat 02-Oct-21 17:08:47

“But never mind cancer deaths or the drop in life expectation, just look at the wage growth”

lemongrove Sat 02-Oct-21 17:11:57

Ah! From The Guardian......that explains it.?
As Aveline says, alarmist headlines sell papers.Next week’s fish and chip paper ( or worse!)

Doomed. We're all doomed. Again!

You may joke but some of us may be.

I have just been out to get some lactose free milk and there was none in my usual, short drive. supermarket. Using more fuel I went to another; the was still none. The third one had some but I have to say thisrather longer trip than I intended trip sent a shudder through me with thoughts of the coming winter. What if I can't get the fuel to go round all the supermarkets? I will not die (yet) if I don't have it but I really don't know what I will do to stop myself being very ill if my specialist foods are unavailable.

So joke away Aveline. Be it foods, fuel or heating, some people will die if it isn't sorted out.

Thanks for thinking of us (not).

They are releasing them in stages. You'll get another go...

Zoejory Sat 02-Oct-21 17:18:17

Fear not, PippaZ!

You can buy it online. Have it delivered. Loads of different brands available

Kate1949 Sat 02-Oct-21 17:18:51

We've had trouble getting lactose free milk too Pippa. Asda had some yesterday.

JaneJudge Sat 02-Oct-21 17:19:28

Pippaz, the lactose free things started the week before the petrol chaos! I could only get some off my milkman, it had sold out everywhere, in shops and online deliveries. The only place I found some (not off the milkman) was in a big iceland food warehouse (if that helps)

JaneJudge Sat 02-Oct-21 17:20:46

I drive past a big costco twice a day and it has been generally quiet for months. Last week they were queuing to get on and off and not for petrol either

And after the Labour Party conference as well, that speaks volumes. Wonder what it will be like after their conference?
