Who is paying for it then?

Boris Johnson’s spokesman repeatedly refused on Monday to confirm who has paid for Boris Johnson’s holiday to Marbella and won't say whether the Prime Minister has paid for his own holiday or who else has funded it.

Pushed on the question, Downing Street would only say that the prime minister would disclose any donations he has received, if required to do so, at a later date.

The caginess from Johnson’s spokesman follows reports that the prime minister is currently staying at a villa owned by the Conservative peer Zac Goldsmith.

Goldsmith, who is a close friend of both Johnson and his wife, was handed a peerage by Johnson, despite having been rejected by voters three times in just four years.''

Does anyone know- how many holidays has the PM had since he became PM!

Isn’t your he a good mate that was given a peerage even though he’d stood for election several times and the electorate hadn’t voted for him (please correct me if I’m wrong as I’m going from memory here).

Irrespective of whether Boris should be away on holiday rather than leading from Number 10, the answer to the question, "Who is paying for it?", is the owner of course. It's certainly not a peak week, and half term bookings are a few weeks off yet. The property would be standing idle anyway and charges like utilities, taxes and insurance are paid annually. It makes no real odds.
Someone mentioned cleaning, laundry and bed making. Really? We allowed friends to use our properties free of charge, but how churlish would it have been to say, "give us £100 for the cleaning, oh yes and £60 for the linen, and £20 for the logs you use." We even left the car keys for them to go out and about.
Whether in Boris's case the owner is out for something else in return, we don't know. Maybe he is just a good mate.

But everything in your life and mine is affected by his actions ( or lack of them)…..

Gwyneth Tue 12-Oct-21 11:59:35

??my last word too. I have a life outside of Boris.

It all seems a bit silly to obsess about BJ when he is doing what heads of government (or state) everywhere seem to have have done forever - not saying it is right, but I think OP - you should choose your battles.
Last word

One way in which the rich stay rich is to find ways and means of covering their expenses. Even very wealthy film stars let their homes (for vast rents).

Money makes money!

^There must be thousands of women in this country expecting their 2nd child but they don't have a cook, a cleaner, a nanny and are not chauffered everywhere by car.^
And your point is?
Should we give ALL these women the money to enable them to have these things?

It would prove some kind of commitment to "levelling up". Decent maternity services and post-natal support would be a start.

TBH if it had been a villa belonging to some dodgy oligarch then I’d certainly be worked up about it. But it doesn’t, so I can’t.

Might add that (whatever anyone thinks of the Tories) Zac Goldsmith was our MP and was an excellent and very active constituency MP, who replied very promptly to any email and frequently held public evening meetings where anyone could air views or ask questions. I never went but dh went to several.

In this constituency it’s always a pretty close toss up between Tories/LDs - Labour come nowhere. IIRC in the previous GE the LD candidate lost (after more than one recount) by only 50 odd votes.

But the fact remains that he was voted out more than once and was given a peerage. At the very least, it smacks of cronyism and has a whiff of "cash for questions" about it.

I expect several on here have friends with holiday homes, whether it's an apartment on the Costa del Sol, a cottage in Wales or in France, Italy or wherever. I also expect that those friends will let you use them without a charge apart from maybe contributing towards the cost of utilities.

By borrowing said holiday home, we are receiving a gift or a benefit. If said friends also let their holiday homes out on a commercial basis then they should be apportioning the upkeep costs between the commercially let periods and the rest of the time when the property is either empty or used by friends and family.

Are you every bit as interested in the holiday plans of your own head of government in Switzerland or is it just our government and PM you are obsessed with. Who are you asking? Who has a head of government in Switzerland? I am confused.

so does this mean he should never have a holiday?

But he's already had more holidays than his predecessor in less time...

Did his hero Churchill go batting off on holiday every five minutes? (bigger crisis, admittedly)

There are those who might say that he's not really governing the country anyway; just leaves it to the rest of his ministers. In which case, why are we paying the idle layabout?

@Lucca. Boris’s supporters should take heart - he obviously doesn’t collapse into bed exhausted EVERY night does he ? ?

Oh dear, totally unwanted image.

I think the point being that a week after taking £20 away from the poorest and watching as 1.5million people were pushed into fuel poverty this month into having to decide whether to keep warm or eat - dashing off on a luxury holiday whilst the country faces the worst problems in a life time.

Not good optics is it?

I'm sure the country will still be facing those problems when he gets back. There is always one crisis or another, so does this mean he should never have a holiday?

Callistemon Tue 12-Oct-21 10:47:25

As long as she remakes the beds! I’d rather hang sheets out than make beds!?

Me too.

Ps I just need an obliging Spanish housekeeper to instruct the laundry maid to hang out the sheets in the lovely sunshine while I put my feet up.

Sounds like home in Wales (except we only have a garden pond, not a swimming pool)

"The PM’s wife is expecting their second child in a couple of months so this is probably their last opportunity to fly abroad for a well deserved holiday."

There must be thousands of women in this country expecting their 2nd child but they don't have a cook, a cleaner, a nanny and are not chauffered everywhere by car. Many of them will be on Universal Credit and facing rising food and gas prices while losing £20 a week, I'm sure they would love a holiday in a 25K a week villa in Spain!

Dominic Raab was sunbathing in Crete when Kabul fell and Johnson is holidaying in Spain while the country is in Crisis - there's a pattern emerging here.

As for mentioning the Blairs (inevitable on GN) why stop there? why not go back to Wilson and the Scilly Isles, Ted Heath and his yacht, Churchill painting in Madeira? If Johnson needed a holiday he really should have stayed in the UK, I'm sure he has plenty of rich friends with country mansions.
