ExDancer I am sure understands geography very well, and the reality of this situation.

Actually, it was Wwmk2 who made the original error, Kali. I'm sure she's suitably chastened now ?

(I'd've just blamed predictive text...)

Okay. ‘Dommages’ in this context means disadvantages. I get that.
So what on earth is Macron getting his knickers in a twist about?
Some say he’s gearing up for the election next April in France. To look ‘tough’ against the threat of the Right politicians nipping at his heels.

Mamie exactly right, of course. Awaiting Urmstongran’s take on the correct translation……..not holding breath of course,

Breaking News:

Jersey has offered France 49 temporary fishing licences in an attempt to prevent Paris carrying out its threat to the Channel Island’s energy supplies.

Emmanuel Macron has set Jersey and the UK a deadline of midnight to make a “significant offer” on fishing licences or face retaliation, including increased energy prices or preventing goods being landed at ports.

Jersey has now issued 162 permanent and temporary licences to French vessels, which blockaded its main port in May in protest. However, French fishermen have demanded 216 licences, which means the offer may not be enough to satisfy Paris.

98 % of fishing permit have been granted so all this is for 2% and those boats have no History of Fishing in those waters.
I agree with Australia comment to Macron.. Get over it.

One reason for them not having records is that they are tiny boats and don't have GPS equipment.

It's also been pointed out that if they'd fished there for years and years with no problem they could hardly have anticipated the UK leaving the EU and the need to keep records to prove their 'rights'.

As they are tiny boats, I doubt if what they catch is particularly significant. It's not as if they were factory trawlers hoovering up everything on the seabed for miles around.

It's a stupid dispute that the government is using to whip up anti EU feeling. I understand that the Jersey fishers were perfectly happy with the French boats being there and many of them are supporting them against the UK.

Jersey was never in the EU, anyway, so this is whole situation is very weird.

Macron doesn’t read these threads.

I do.
Others are being goady (again) toward me.
Never mind I’m getting used to it now.

So what on earth is Macron getting his knickers in a twist about?

I think he's a bit peed off about the UK not sticking to the negotiated agreements that were signed. That's the first bit of the sentence agreements have to be respected and are non negotiable,

And of course, the Beloved Leader never postures and grandstands...

Mamie Mon 01-Nov-21 13:58:54

The 98% figure was not correct. 90% of EU licences had been granted and the remaining 10% refused were all French. Many of these are small Normandy fishing boats who have fished in local waters around Jersey for generations. They do not always have the equipment that enable bigger boats to prove historic locations.
Macron is concerned for the rights and livelihoods of French citizens. It is what good politicians do. Not sure why it is so difficult to understand.

Oh, go on, you love it really...

Anyway, I was thinking this morning, as I mucked out my little pony's stable, just what did you expect would happen when we left the EU? Did you think everything would just go on as usual?

ayse Mon 01-Nov-21 14:13:13

It’s so easy to pick on the little fishermen who are just seeking a small living. The fishermen in inland Scottish waters are having problems as well. These are also family businesses. Large trawler owners are those who are wrecking the marine environment.

I wish our stupid politicians would just sit down and negotiate instead of shouting at each other. It brings to mind small children arguing about their toys. Those who threaten loudest …..

Urmstongran Mon 01-Nov-21 14:15:05

No I didn’t expect a smooth ride. Definitely expected some bumps in the road. However, recently the EU took off 80% of checks for produce going to N.I. Now, if that were possible, why did they insist on so many checks in the first place?

I’m not being “goady” at all. Just interested to see the debate progress.

You could just wait. Quietly and politely? That would be a novelty.

“I understand the Jersey fishers were perfectly happy with the French boats being there”

This isn’t true. The President of the Jersey fishers association has spoken about the French demands to have no restrictions placed on them, whilst Jersey fishermen continue to operate within the restraints of their licences.

The issue of licences is for the benefit of everyone (and the planet) to prevent over-fishing and maintain stocks. Everyone would like a bigger quota on their licence. If everyone gets it there’ll soon be no fish?

Lucca Mon 01-Nov-21 14:19:13

Urmstongran, leaving aside the goady malarkey I’d like to politely ask yiu what this means “ Marcos Sefcovic, a European Commission vice-president seems worried that Boris finally growing a pair about something. I ‘do hope so, but it will not make up for the green suicide mission he is on

I think you'll find that was 'done' some while back in this thread.

Urmstongran Mon 01-Nov-21 14:44:54

You asked what I meant about Boris’ green turbo boost on climate change Lucca. (I’m childminding in between comments here, just chopped up a bowl of fruit for my charge!).

We are a tiny island. And yes I get it that ‘every little helps’. However I read that Joe Biden came to Europe with FOUR planes. One of which, was a Boeing C17 Globemaster carrying his helicopter (!), another carrying his cavalcade of EIGHTY CARS and yet another carrying 100s of people including security staff and journalists. (One plane was a decoy Air Force One). His Cadillac 'Beast,' a 20,000 pound armored limousine that only gets around 8 mpg, was also on board.

The carbon footprint of this one trip is 2.16 million pounds of carbon dioxide and we are supposed to take this codswallop seriously? Meanwhile a friend of mine is paying £24 to drive drive into central London to offset global warming?

I’m sorry but our Green Heroes are going to do a lot better than this if I am ever to vote for Boris again. It’s ridiculous. Too fast, too soon & China, India, Russia & the USA have no intention of doing much.

Urmstongran Mon 01-Nov-21 14:48:40

Boris is failing to read the room no one has thr appetite for this scare mongering hot on the heels of covid disaster scare tactics we are sick to death of, we need to recover, regain jobs, warm homes pay bills, survive winter, feed kids don't tell us about another disaster whilst you all get on super sized aeroplanes.... the ordinary working person is not interested and the Tactics of XR insulate Britain ad nauseam have given us an aversion to climate change politics.
