Greta Thunberg is a Pain in the proverbial

Is it just me or is she increasingly coming across as a brat having a permanent tantrum.? She has no positive ideas, merely demands to stop doing just about everything while the media hangs on her every intemperate word? Blah blah blah…..

Thank God Greta has come along. Our poor overheating world needs her so much.

JenniferEccles Sun 07-Nov-21 18:51:36

I admit to having somewhat mixed feelings about little Miss Thunberg.
Although she can come across as an annoying teen, I agree with those who say she is being manipulated.

She’s quite a marketable commodity though isn’t she? Such passionately held views in an 18 year old who looks not a day over 12 must be unusual.
Her permanently cross little face is bound to attract criticism and of course she is a gift to cartoonists, some of whom have captured her to a t, especially those who made her Spitting Image puppet!

etheltbags1 Sun 07-Nov-21 18:52:19

I admire her . This is the younger generation who are worried about the world we are leaving them. She ( and her followers) are the ones who have to put this situation right.
Better than smoking drugs on a street corner or living on benefit. She's not a child she's 18, quite old enough to see the wrong our generation has done. Good for her.

Alegrias1 Sun 07-Nov-21 18:59:51

If you read about her, watch her documentary or actually listen to what she says, it would be obvious that she's not being manipulated. I can only think that people who say that just cannot believe that a young woman can be as impressive as she is so they have to assume that there's something behind her amazing impact.

"Little Miss Thunberg" could have us all for breakfast and spit out the bones from her cross little face. (Except she's vegan of course ?)

little Miss Thunberg

Another way to insult her. This time by infantilizing her.

Dickens Sun 07-Nov-21 19:15:42

"You’re taking this thread way too seriously.
I’d have forgotten it by tomorrow, as would most of us."

... some of the comments have been personal, nasty, and spiteful.

You might have forgotten it by tomorrow so you can be dismissive of others, but some of us find this kind of bullying worrying.

So, yeah, I for one will take this thread "far too seriously".

lemongrove Sun 07-Nov-21 19:22:29

Look, for all those getting so worked up.....this is a forum for opinions mainly, and now and then, depending on the thread for some facts.
So....be tolerant and have your opinion and allow others to have theirs. If it doesn’t accord with your own, then so be it.
Stop the digs and insults, it’s ridiculous.

Kali2 Sun 07-Nov-21 19:28:30

To be sure lemongrove- but it started with the 'title'.

I won't forget it, not because of the insults, or the 'judgements' - but because it is so so important.

Scones Sun 07-Nov-21 19:29:43

Do you mean the digs and insults directed at the 18 year old woman at the centre of this thread?

lemongrove Sun 07-Nov-21 19:33:16

I mean the digs and insults aimed at fellow Gransnetters for daring to have an opinion that doesn’t accord with yours or some others Scones ( as you know.)

Pammie1 Sun 07-Nov-21 19:38:11

Sick of being lectured about everything under the sun by young people with little experience of life. She may have a communication disorder, but that doesn’t excuse her rudeness and intolerance. And I’d like to know how she’s offsetting her own carbon footprint because she certainly gets around !!

Alegrias1 Sun 07-Nov-21 19:40:13

Shall I have my opinions and facts chat again?

Nah, not worth it.

Scones Sun 07-Nov-21 19:42:39

No, it was a genuine question. The entire concept of this thread was based on an OP constructed of dig and insult. Thereafter followed insult after dig after insult.

lemongrove Sun 07-Nov-21 19:55:13

Since you refuse to see it Scones not much point in engaging with you on it.
Perhaps some respect for other Gransnetters and allowing them their own views was too much to ask.
That doesn’t mean not picking up people who post wrong facts, but allowing without insult their own opinion on the subject of this thread, Greta Thunberg.

Scones Sun 07-Nov-21 20:16:17

What sort of business are we in here if we can't call out people who aim personal insult after insult at a young woman? Are you suggesting we stand by silently?

You and many others have pointed out how hatred online creates problems in the real world. I don't think we should be indulging the level of unkindness that we witnessed on here today.

If that makes me intolerant then I will have to live with that.

... I've no problem with those whose opinions differs from mine - in fact, I've sometimes learned from them.

It's not the opinions, nor the facts, it's the way some of them are expressed.

You say "stop the digs and insults"... I think we were on course for those insults from the point of the original posting which set the tone.

lemongrove Sun 07-Nov-21 21:15:31

Dickens the ‘blah blah blah’ in the OP is a quote from GT herself, dismissing what world leaders have to say on global warming.
In any case, if a ( seen as) contentious comment is posted as an OP that doesn’t mean it’s a free for all to insult individual posters on the thread.
It would be really good to post views on either GT and her style of campaigning or the whole issue itself of global warming and what will come from the negotiations in Glasgow and not turning on GN posters.

Shandy57 Sun 07-Nov-21 21:24:30

It's a shame that GN doesn't have the 'poll' facility so that people could have voted without comment.

... it wasn't the "blah, blah, blah" that was offensive - and yes, I know that Greta herself made that comment.

The original post - calling her a "brat" - was a fairly direct call to us to verbally bully, demean and denigrate an 18 year old girl with Asperger's.

We all know that online bullying is a 'thing' and I think the tone of the OP - not the opinion, we're all entitled to one - is shameful.

I agree some people aren’t holding back on directing insults at this young woman who isn’t afraid to call out her elders, not betters, for dragging their feet on the climate emergency. Yet they get their knickers in a twist over perceived slights to themselves.

Allsorts Mon 08-Nov-21 07:20:46

She does mean well, certainly covers some miles, but she always looks so cross and full of angst. You like to think teenagers can have some fun in their lives and I know it’s a very important thing, climate change, but I do wonder if she gets enjoyment out of life too, I very much hope so.

What about being lectured to by older people on here with lots of experience of life. What excuses their rudeness and intolerance?
Climate change is not an opinion, it's a fact. As the vast majority here are grandparents, we are supposed to care about the future.
This has been far and away the most unpleasant thread I've ever read here. Someone trying to do something positive being castigated for not being likeable enough?

growstuff Mon 08-Nov-21 07:37:00

I agree with you Chardy. Some of the posts on this thread are appalling.

25Avalon Mon 08-Nov-21 09:13:30

Whether you like Greta Thunberg or not, whether you agree climate change is caused by humans or not, Greta is right on two counts. One, world leaders don’t seem to be actually doing very much on a global scale, hence her blah, blah, blah quote. Two, companies are now engaging in greenwashing, trying to make themselves look green and advertising that, even if they aren’t that green, so that they get business.

I agree so much with this. Why have a Gransnet if you shoot down people you do not agree with. You can politely say you do not agree and give your opinion.
If you continue in the same vane people will stop posting and the small cabal that seems to think they rule will be left arguing with each other.
I know if anybody teenager or adult said Blah, Blah, Blah at me I would question their manners and who had taught them. Am I being contentious not in my opinion others might accept being spoken to so and I accept their view.
