UK ‘dangerously close to elected dictatorship’ under Boris Johnson, Ken Clarke warns

I couldn't agree more with this. It's exactly what I said on here (and elsewhere as I'm sure you can imagine!) two years ago.

The UK is “dangerously close” to becoming an “elected dictatorship” under Boris Johnson, veteran Tory Ken Clarke is warning – as he branded his handling of Brexit clashes “laughable”.

The former cabinet heavyweight lashed out at the prime minister’s disregard for “constitutional constraints”, calling his party “more nationalist than at any time in my lifetime”.

“He gets angry if the courts or parliament try to interfere. As the elected prime minister, he thinks he should not be impeded in these ways,” Lord Clarke said.

“We are now getting dangerously close to the “elected dictatorship” that Lord Hailsham, the former Lord Chancellor, warned us about half a century ago.”

Scary isn't it.

I’ve got a lot of respect for Ken Clarke, he is very sensible. Parliament has felt his loss since he stood down.

GagaJo Thu 18-Nov-21 14:46:16

It really is. And it was so obvious what was coming and yet the 'better than Jeremy Corbyn' lemmings swarmed over the edge of the cliff to vote Tory. And here we are.

Very good article, I agree with him. Thanks GagaJo.

We've discussed this before and it's been dismissed as nonsense, or it can't possibly be a dictatorship because we haven't got people in jackboots walking all over us..

Several commentators have written much the same thing. Perhaps it might be taken more seriously coming from a former tory minister and highly experienced parliamentarian.

I find it laughable reading lavish compliments about Ken Clarke from left leaning posters.?
He’s a bitter Remainer and has always been full of himself in any case.

I often wonder how posters will cope if Johnson is voted in again next time.?⚡️?Fireworks I should think.
Look, all the nonsense about dictatorships may be swallowed by the gullible, sensible people know better.

I think he’s one of the most respected politicians of recent times. I know of several Labour voters in his area that voted for him because he was a very good constituency MP.

Does it not bother you that decent MP’s such as Clarke, Stewart, Soubry, Grieve and Soames couldn’t possibly serve under a Conservative leader such as Johnson?

Me- thinks thou doth protest…….

Katie59 Thu 18-Nov-21 15:19:01

Elected dictatorship, works well in China - for the elite, with luck they won’t make Boris PM for life.

TBH, lemon, to people who actually understand how the British constitution and parliamentary democracy are intended to work your post is just arrant nonsense.

And still judging the quality of people's analysis by how they voted in the EU referendum is equally nonsensical.

lemongrove Thu 18-Nov-21 15:21:40

I do indeed protest, ? I have never been able to stand Ken Clarke, the epitomy of a Tory fat cat, pompous man.
As for Anna Soubry and Grieves!
Don’t even get me started on Soames ( another fat cat Tory)
And Rory Stewart left politics because he did so badly in the leadership race.

lemongrove Thu 18-Nov-21 15:23:36

Sorry MaizieD ....I once again forgot that only you and a few
GN friends understand how parliamentary democracy ( and any democracy)works.?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 18-Nov-21 15:23:46

Oh dear, let’s keep to the subject. Other people’s opinion of those who have left the Tory party are simply not relevant.

He will be out either at the next GE or before then so that another Conservative leader can take over I expect.

It was part of my degree course, lemon. History, development and current practice.

So I think I have a pretty good idea of how it is all meant to work

Alegrias1 Thu 18-Nov-21 15:28:24

We're seeing the democratic foundations of our (unwritten) constitution being eroded by a posh bloke who doesn't like to be questioned or argued with, but the standard response is "You're all bitter leftie Remainers, yah boo sucks."

God, we're in a state.

Casdon Thu 18-Nov-21 15:33:22

I don’t know what you’ve been reading about Ken Clarke, but I can guess lemongrove. He’s too moderate for your leaning just about sums it up. I’ve said before that I respect him, it’s nothing to do with being left leaning or right leaning, one can respect a politician from a different party when he behaves professionally, has the courage of his convictions, and although I often don’t agree with him, he is a voice of common sense, as he was when a minister, in opposition and as father of the house. He was in the next constituency to my parents home, and was also very popular as a constituency MP.
Putting him the same league as the other two is just uninformed. .

lemongrove Thu 18-Nov-21 15:33:26

Why always twist words Alegrias ?
I actually said that Ken Clarke is a bitter Remainer.
Nobody has mentioned posters, let alone your version of things.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 18-Nov-21 15:35:55

I think the best way of showing how this is happening is to outline the various laws that have been passed or they hope to get through which begins to restrict more and more.

Alegrias1 Thu 18-Nov-21 15:37:12

Twisting words....

...like saying that someone is very sensible is "lavish compliment"?
