How can an individual stoop so low to want to bomb a maternity hospital?
I am talking, in this instance, of The Women's Hospital in Liverpool.

Scones Thu 18-Nov-21 21:08:13

It's beyond imagining isn't it. Thank heavens he was unsuccessful.

Sarnia Fri 19-Nov-21 08:17:49

There is so much hatred in some people. You can ask that question of anyone who plans and makes a bomb in order to kill and maim. I do not know this man's background but many men in his culture treat women as second class citizens. Was that why a maternity hospital was targeted? Some reports say he was a failed asylum seeker but had stayed in the UK for several years after his claim was rejected. How was he able to do this? Don't the authorities make sure that someone not entitled to live here gets deported? That is one reason why people are concerned at the numbers of migrants reaching our shores. The UK has no effective Border Control and sifting through these people takes far too long. Common sense has to tell you that amongst those coming here for a better life there must be a percentage who are anti-UK.

Some policemen rape and murder women. Stop having policemen, I say. It's just common sense. ?

Well said.

How can anyone want to plant a bomb anywhere?

How can anyone want to plant a bomb anywhere?

That's the scary thing.
Remember the UK National Threat Level has now been raised from substantial to SEVERE. I'm guessing they suspect an attack is highly likely.

If I could be bothered and had the time I’d Google the statistics. However, I can’t and I don’t but those of us on here that do possess common sense do know one is much higher than the other.

Alegrias1 Fri 19-Nov-21 09:28:45

I was just jumping to conclusions tickingbird. Everyone else can do it, why not me?

And obviously it's ridiculous. Just like many other things that people say on here. Difference is, I know it.

Chestnut Fri 19-Nov-21 09:39:16

It's not ridiculous to be concerned about the high numbers of young men who are entering the country about whom we know absolutely nothing. This bomber was not the first terrorist to receive care and support, pretend he was integrating into society, even converting to Christianity, all the while deviously plotting to kill innocent people. We have no idea who these people are arriving on our shores, or what their intentions are.

Anniebach Fri 19-Nov-21 09:40:02

How many police officers have murdered woman and how many migrants have murdered men, women and children

Chewbacca Fri 19-Nov-21 09:46:37

The majority of those plotting terrorist atrocities are British born or raised and not asylum seekers.

Are you suggesting that he spent the last eight years under deep cover getting ready for this?

I know someone who escaped Iran when she was a child and is now in her mid forties. Should I be wary of her?

What this man did was unforgiveable.

But the world has gone mad.

Scones Fri 19-Nov-21 09:49:04

There's a great thread running on Gransnet asking 'What is the answer here?' to solving the issues arising from immigration. I'd really recommend it to anyone interested in how we can minimise the problems in order to reap the benefits. There are many well informed and well balanced comments on there.

There are always good and bad. Please don't forget all the incredible people who come to our country and work in our hospitals, schools, care homes and many other essential services.

No-one is forgetting them. The concern is that we know nothing about the young men who arrive here or what their intentions are.

Galaxy Fri 19-Nov-21 10:22:18

We know nothing really about the man who lives down the street.

Chestnut Fri 19-Nov-21 10:36:32

Galaxy

We know nothing really about the man who lives down the street.

The authorities would know if the man down the street had a criminal record or had been involved in anything dodgy. At least they would if he was a British citizen and had lived here all his life.

Are you suggesting that he spent the last eight years under deep cover getting ready for this?
He converted to Christianity in 2017 to further his application for asylum, but clearly was not a Christian at all, so maybe he had indeed been planning this for years. He had been preparing for the attack for months anyway.

Alegrias1 Fri 19-Nov-21 10:49:23

Chestnut, you are jumping to conclusions with no basis in fact, only prejudice. Its disgraceful.

Are you suggesting that the only people we can trust are British citizens who have lived here all their lives?

That's Boris out then. Oh, and Hilary Mantel. And Graeme Norton.

This is just paranoia, really.

Chestnut Fri 19-Nov-21 11:00:46

Are you suggesting that the only people we can trust are British citizens who have lived here all their lives?
Of course not, but we have a better chance of keeping track of their criminal activities than someone about who we have no information at all.

Chestnut Fri 19-Nov-21 11:07:21

Jumping to conclusions? I've just stated facts. Any conclusions drawn from those facts are logical ones and not based on prejudice. Are you happy to let anyone in the world enter the country when we know nothing about them which could put lives at risk?

Alegrias1 Fri 19-Nov-21 11:09:08

You said this person was not a real Christian.

Can you see into his heart?

Chestnut Fri 19-Nov-21 11:16:10

Alegrias1

Christians don't usually bomb maternity hospitals and try to kill innocent people. And he had apparently been at a mosque all day every day recently, so I think we can safely say he was not a Christian. You are scraping the barrel here.

Alegrias1 Fri 19-Nov-21 11:21:38

Christians don't usually bomb maternity hospitals and try to kill innocent people.

No, in some people's world view only Muslims do that. Getting close to the edge Chestnut.

Pammie1 Fri 19-Nov-21 11:23:09

We’re on the outskirts of the city and I must admit I’ve felt quite anxious since the attack. Fairly frequent daily updates on the local news reports, but a bit difficult to know what’s fact and what’s conjecture. Apparently he was a failed asylum seeker, and seemingly only converted to Christianity to further his application. Reports coming in now say there’s evidence that he’s been planning the attack since April, but the motive is still unclear - another couple of addresses searched in the last two days but nothing specific about what, if anything, was found. He was known to the police for ‘knife related offences’, but again, nothing really specific about the circumstances.

The remembrance service in Liverpool was moved from the city centre Cenotaph to the Anglican cathedral because of road works and it’s thought that this was the target of a suicide bombing. It’s unclear as to why the taxi ended up at the hospital, but it’s situated close to the city centre and it’s thought that because the service had been moved, the man was confused as to where he was going, acting suspiciously and so the taxi driver diverted to get help. There are some reports - not sure how accurate they are -saying that the bomb didn’t detonate properly and that had the man reached his intended target the loss of life would have been significant.

Not much has been reported about the taxi driver in the aftermath - presumably we’ll hear a bit more once the police have all the information.

British born they may be and although I do not know the statistics I feel sure the vast majority of them are decent people. I certainly worked with some lovely colleagues during my time in the NHS. In a way, being British born makes it worse. Why attack your own country? Whether we like it or not there are those living in the UK who will do us harm. If they are so opposed to our way of life why stay here?
