Will someone please tell them Quidditch isn’t real?

For heavens sake! (I could express it more strongly, but really…)
OFFICIALS in charge of Quidditch, a sport inspired by Harry Potter, are to change its name to “distance” it from JK Rowling because of her views on transgender issues.
JK Rowling has been targeted by trans activists because she does not agree with ‘erasing the concept of sex
JK Rowling has been targeted by trans activists because she does not agree with ‘erasing the concept of sex
US Quidditch (USQ) and Major League Quidditch (MLQ) will conduct surveys in the next few months to decide the new name, they announced in a joint statement this week
It said: “The leagues are hoping a name change can help them continue to distance themselves from the works of JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter book series, who has increasingly come under scrutiny for her anti-trans positions in recent years
Our sport has developed a reputation as one of the most progressive sports in the world on gender equality and inclusivity, in part thanks to its gender maximum rule, which stipulates that a team may not have more than four players of the same gender on the field at a time

1). She wrote the bliddy books.
2) It’s not real
3) What have Harry Potter books to do with sexuality/ transgender/ transitioning / or even (whisper) reality?

I really and truly despair confusedconfused

Grannydarkhair - you’ll wait a long time ?

Chewbacca Sun 19-Dec-21 19:05:03

Even if you disagree with JKR's stance on transgender issues, to say that she's a highly overrated author just demonstrates how desperate you are to criticise her! Her books have been translated into 80 languages, she's sold more than 500,000,000 worldwide and she's worth an estimated £820,000,000. Yeah, she's definitely a failure as a writer. grin gringrin

Doodledog

*AmberSpyglass*, are you able to link us up to anything in JKR's own words that has led you to this conclusion, please?

Yes that would be interesting .

Is saying women exist transphobic ?

Will someone please tell me AmberSpyglass isn’t serious? ?

I'd like to, Grannydarkhair, but I can't.

Cherrytree59 Sun 19-Dec-21 19:15:53

grannydarkhair unfortunately I fear that Amberspyglass is indeed serious.

AmberSpyglass how many best sellers have you penned?

Please point me in the direction that leads you to the conclusion JKR is a transphobe.

grannydarkhair Sun 19-Dec-21 19:20:52

Iam64 and Calistemon I know. I think I was probably just trying to keep the thread light-hearted.
It’s Coming Out Day today for the GC of mind, and I’m over-loaded with Twitter, emails, etc.

grannydarkhair Sun 19-Dec-21 19:22:29

Or as it’s otherwise known Happy Terfmas Day!

Is saying women exist transphobic?

Increasingly, yes it is. And it's "poor sportsmanship" apparently to complain when this person competes in the women's cycling race and wins the world record because they say they're a woman.

FarNorth Sun 19-Dec-21 19:30:31

AmberSpyglass did you just pop into this thread to chuck a couple of unnecessary insults?
Or can you actually back up what you said?

FarNorth Sun 19-Dec-21 19:32:29

I wonder if the Quidditch leagues, or whatever they have, were paying any royalties for use of the idea and name?

Just cheating
That's no woman, that's a misogynistic male.

Some men really hate women succeeding at anything, don't they!
Pathetic.

They do (hate women). And it is (pathetic).

JKR is a great role model for both girls and boys. She showed great perseverance managing to write at all as a skint single parent, and she hasn't forgotten her roots. As others have said, she wrote in a way that appealed to even reluctant readers, so I'm not convinced that she is overrated. These things are subjective anyway.

Her indomitable stance in the face of disgraceful abuse from Trans Activists is admirable. She is able to use her fame and money to stop the more objectionable ones in their tracks, by prosecuting them. Most women who get abuse can't afford to do that, and the risk to their careers of standing up to Trans Activism is too great for the vast majority of women to take. (Google Kathleen Stock if that seems unlikely.)

I have seen and heard countless jibes aimed at JKR, but I have yet to be shown anything that she has said that is transphobic.

Chewbacca Sun 19-Dec-21 20:40:44

I have yet to be shown anything that she has said that is transphobic. Simply stating biological facts is now considered "transphobic".

You’ve got to admit she’s a stunner. I know, bad taste, couldn’t resist ?

Calistemon Sun 19-Dec-21 20:52:35

I do wish my leg muscles were more like that - perhaps it might help my knees.

Is there a prize for coming last in the cycling race? Like 5 years later than everyone else?

The Guardian are currently looking for votes for their person of the year. It's very easy to vote.

Yes, and a vote for JKR wouldn't be wasted, IMO.

Cherrytree59 Sun 19-Dec-21 21:07:00

Galaxy I clicked on the guardian link via Feminism board on Mumsnet and voted for JKR.

MerylStreep Sun 19-Dec-21 21:11:13

5 years later ?

Rosie51 Sun 19-Dec-21 21:13:55

JKR is a wonderful inspiration to so many. People like AmberSpyglass come onto threads, make one or two accusations, and then retreat. I have never known her/him to be able to quote one transphobic sentence that JKR has said or written. No TRA has ever been able to come up with a direct quote for the simple reason there isn't one. Not...one....single.....one. Instead they resort to stamping their feet and saying she is because they said so. Science, reality and truth are strangers to them in this area.
As for Quidditch, the earthbound version these players engage in is so divorced from the fantastic game played in the books, it is only right they choose a new name. No reason to sully JKR's inspired invention.

That’s the joke of the week from AmberSpyglass. Highly overrated as a poster. Next will she be telling me the one about men growing a cervix?

Chewbacca Sun 19-Dec-21 23:02:11

It was a "hit and run" post Mollygo!
