The SNP to cut off the bottom half of classroom doors!

Here we are 2 years into the pandemic SNP ministers are to spend £300,000 chopping the bottoms off hundreds of classroom doors in an attempt to stop the spread of Covid, under a “crackpot” plan unveiled yesterday.

Nicola Sturgeon defended the spending but Holyrood’s opposition parties lambasted the “DIY ventilation” plan as a “lazy solution”.

Whitewavemark2

You are assuming that I hadn’t done so?

I never assume anything Whitewavemark2

There are too many people on GN waiting to jump on posters who make assumptions.

According to my DD who is Deputy in a large (English) primary school, they received funding for air filtration (?) units from the government but that wasn’t enough for every classroom. I think the Academy Trust funded the remainder. They open windows and keep internal doors open.

Surely there’s a good reason as to why the SNP is sanctioning the chopping of classroom doors? It just beggars belief.

Sounds to me like a mis-timed April Fool!

Urmstongran Thu 03-Feb-22 11:07:56

Or an early Bonfire Night Witzend! ?

MerylStreep Thu 03-Feb-22 11:21:22

I trust they’re not fire doors.

Kali2 Thu 03-Feb-22 11:25:05

I imagine, they are working on advice. And the bottoms cut so exchanges of air are done at foot level, not face !?!

Callistemon21 Thu 03-Feb-22 11:26:41

MerylStreep

I trust they’re not fire doors.

I hope they don't leave splinters - such a H&S hazard.

Or just enough room for an enterprising child to start to wriggle underneath when the teacher's back is turned, get stuck and they have to call the Fire Brigade.
There's always one.

This could be a fun story to follow smile

But presumably these doors lead on to corridors which all the children rush through in senior schools to change rooms?

This hasn't been thought through, has it.

Namsnanny Thu 03-Feb-22 11:37:32

They've had enough time to think it through.

Urmstongran Thu 03-Feb-22 11:40:23

Obviously not long enough Namsnanny!

Or an early Bonfire Night Witzend! ?

Bonfire of the vanities? Most classroom doors have metal kickboards at the bottom to save the paint hope they have their metal cutting equipment with them.
If this had been proposed in England we would have been totally lambasted.
I don't think" Scotland the Brave", should be sung "Donald where's your trousers?" would be more appropriate they are all going to need them.grin

Get a life, honestly.
Oh, but Alegrias - can you imagine the flak the Westminster Government would have got if they had announced a crack-pot scheme like this?

When the pandemic is over all the doors will have to be replaced with full-sized ones again at great cost.

It does beggar belief

???

I was thinking the same.

I’m just going into town to panic-buy a saw, before the shelves are all empty! grin

Seriously, what’s concerning about this is that someone had come up with this crackpot idea but not one person in the administration has had the nerve to say ‘Nope, this isn’t going to work, let’s think again.’

My dd administers services for schools. Many doors in schools are supposed to be kept shut because they are fire doors. How’s that going to work with a six inch gap at the bottom? hmm

Visgir1 Thu 03-Feb-22 12:43:06

Saw this on Twitter yesterday, some answers hysterical!
Unbelievable....

Lincslass Thu 03-Feb-22 12:43:55

So all the papers must be lying, most I’ve seen are reporting this story, true or false!!

They called Boris a buffoon but who are the biggest buffoons now lol the SNP and Nicola Sturgeon ?

Alegrias1 Thu 03-Feb-22 12:48:08

Honestly, you're pathetic..

An estimated 2,000 classrooms are “problematic” in terms of ventilation and the Scottish Government expects to spend £4.3 million to improve air flow, Education Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville has said.

Schools where there are “persistently high C02 levels” in certain rooms will be able to buy air filters, extractor fans and have the bottom chopped off classroom doors to improve air flow in an effort to reduce the spread of coronavirus, Ms Somerville said.

In a letter to Holyrood’s Education Committee Ms Somerville set out the projected costs to improve air quality in about 2,000 rooms, including £1.6 million on air filters, £2.4 million for mechanical fans and £300,000 for doors to be “undercut to increase air flow”.

Riverwalk Thu 03-Feb-22 13:19:00

Would it not be easier to leave the door ajar?

Urmstongran Thu 03-Feb-22 13:31:25

Aw admit it Alegrias you’d be loving this if Boris had proposed chopping off classroom doors for some schools in England! I just know you would.
?

Urmstongran Thu 03-Feb-22 13:32:49

Alegrias1

Oh, but its in the Telegraph and the Mail, so it much be true and accurate!

In fact what we've all been told is that NS is taking a sabbatical from being FM so she can do it herself. She's bought a saw and a boiler suite and she's got a schedule for which school she's going to visit when. After she's done all the children will stand in the car park wearing see you Jimmy hats and singing Scotland the Brave.

Get a life, honestly.

You didn’t believe me at first!

SueDonim Thu 03-Feb-22 13:46:21

‘My leader, right or wrong.’ ?

Alegrias1 Thu 03-Feb-22 13:53:26

Not-quite-the-sharpest-tool-in-the-box Mr D Ross asking about chopping off the bottom of doors at FMQs today and getting his a*** handed to him. First six minutes.
