Here we are 2 years into the pandemic SNP ministers are to spend £300,000 chopping the bottoms off hundreds of classroom doors in an attempt to stop the spread of Covid, under a “crackpot” plan unveiled yesterday.

Nicola Sturgeon defended the spending but Holyrood’s opposition parties lambasted the “DIY ventilation” plan as a “lazy solution”.

What happens in the winter? ?Why not leave the door open or the windows.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 03-Feb-22 16:43:24

Oh Alegias1 have you read the BBC websites article (updated 2 hours ago)?

Ms Sturgeon is quoted defending the removing of parts of doors (bottom section) where she thinks it’s appropriate.

So, has the person posting this post actually read anything about what's going on?
The poster concerned couldn't give a monkeys whether it is in Scotland or elsewhere, or even whether it is true, but it is a topic that comes up all the time in any school. The poster was actually thinking it might be appropriate to discuss how this problem is not insurmountable and how the best outcome might be achieved.

Alegrias1 Thu 03-Feb-22 16:46:59

Well the poster should stop talking about barmy ideas without understanding the proposal then.

'You cannot be serious' !!!!! What about containing a fire?

Callistemon21 Thu 03-Feb-22 16:50:00

BBC:
The first minister said councils would have the option to act if doors were "inhibiting the natural flow of air", and said health and safety would be considered in all decisions.

That's what doors are for! To increase the natural flow of air we can open them.
They can be opened slightly, partway, halfway, threequarters or fully. Very versatile things, doors.

'You cannot be serious' !!!!! What about containing a fire?

Exactly. During school inspections you are pulled up for wedges propping doors open even a tiny amount.

Best to open windows, really.

Simples.

All the children will be issued with a tartan fire extinguisher and a pair of trainers so they can run away quickly.

I know who Wee Burney is and it is a very sad story For anyone who cares to inform themselves of it.

Aveline Thu 03-Feb-22 17:09:52

Nicola speaks. Not her finest hour. Sorry Alegrias people all over the country are laughing at this idea.

Nicola doesn't speak though, does she Aveline, if you actually look at the article you posted?

I haven't been in a classroom for over 40 years. I've no idea if the teachers like to leave doors open, if they get told off for wedging them open, or if anyone thinks its a good idea to have windows open in the Highlands in the middle of winter with minus 5 degrees outside.

But money is being made available for a number of optional measures. Some will be unsuited to some situations, maybe nobody will even modify a door. But the government didn't come up with this over a plate of porridge in the morning, its the recommendation of people who know about ventilation. But the first reaction of all the opposition leaders (and Willie Rennie wink) and the anti-SNP newspapers, and everyone on GN who likes to jump on a half formed anti-Nicola story, is to start mocking the idea, making things up about it, telling lies about it and going on and on about fire regulations.

Throw in a bit of name calling and we're all done.

Yes, I am annoyed.

Josieann Thu 03-Feb-22 17:37:08

going on and on about fire regulations
Well anyone who has a child or grandchild at school would want this to be gone over and over. Priority.

Smileless2012 Thu 03-Feb-22 17:46:43

TBF fire regulations are a concern surely. If a fire breaks out in a room, once the room has been evacuated the next step is to close the door. What's the point of closing a door when the bottom has been cut off, when the smoke and possibly the fire can escape through the gap at the bottom?

I accept that you don’t find this extraordinarily silly idea laughable Alegrias2 but as you will have seen from the comments, the majority of us do!

Wee Burney was a character in a Rab C Nesbit tv programme some years ago, which to me was decidedly not funny at all.

We all differ don’t we?

SueDonim Thu 03-Feb-22 18:04:37

I wonder if some wee government minion is this evening on their way to a new posting in the farthest reaches of the Outer Hebrides with a one-way ticket. grin

Don’t worry about the fire regulations, anyone. All school children are to be fitted with interlinked smoke alarms so they’ll be perfectly safe. When one goes off, they’ll all go off.

Oldbat1 Thu 03-Feb-22 18:12:21

Some schools have non opening windows.

Wee Burney was played by Eric Cullen, who was born with a form of dwarfism. He died aged 31 of a heart attack, after a sad life involving sexual abuse and depression.

What a good idea to use his most famous character as a way calling the FM names. What a laugh, eh? We are all different, aren't we?

SueDonim Thu 03-Feb-22 18:22:13

I’m pretty sure all classroom doors open, though, Oldbat.

Aveline Thu 03-Feb-22 18:26:30

SueDonim- I agree. Some poor minion will be packing up their desk and getting ready for a posting to the back of beyond!

Chewbacca Thu 03-Feb-22 18:39:16

This thread has had me in stitches! The lunatic suggestion to cut doors in half was funny enough but the best bits have been watching Alegrias getting more and more indignant and cross with each post! Comedy gold Alegrias thanks for the guffaws of laughter today! gringringrin

My DD rented several old houses in Sydney Australia. These places always had big gaps under the doors for air circulation because of the hot summers.
My ankles were always very cold because I only visited in the Australian winters.

SueDonim Thu 03-Feb-22 19:02:14

Think of all the money they’ll save on only have to paint half a door, too!
