The SNP to cut off the bottom half of classroom doors!

Here we are 2 years into the pandemic SNP ministers are to spend £300,000 chopping the bottoms off hundreds of classroom doors in an attempt to stop the spread of Covid, under a “crackpot” plan unveiled yesterday.

Nicola Sturgeon defended the spending but Holyrood’s opposition parties lambasted the “DIY ventilation” plan as a “lazy solution”.

Wee Burney was a character in a Rab C Nesbit tv programme some years ago, which to me was decidedly not funny at all.

Be careful, JenniferEccles, Mrs Rab C Nesbitt is a Gransnetter and very lovely she is too.

Poor Wee Burney died in real life, it was very sad as he was so young.

My DD rented several old houses in Sydney Australia. These places always had big gaps under the doors for air circulation because of the hot summers.
My ankles were always very cold because I only visited in the Australian winters.

I remember staying with a DD in an old Queenslander in July and it was perishing because the draughts came up through the gaps in the floorboards.
It was a lovely house otherwise (thankfully rented)

Sometimes Gransnet is informative, supportive, sometimes irritable, sometimes angry, sometimes, dare I say it, boring.

But this thread is a joy, as Gransnet used to be!
Thanks Urmstongran ?

If this is a joy and how GN used to be, then I'm off.

See ya.

Are you taking you ball with you ?

Callistemon21 Thu 03-Feb-22 19:52:13

You're not Nicola, are you?

Oldbat1 Thu 03-Feb-22 19:53:52

SueDonin yes I realise that. ? but some schools genuinely do not have opening windows at all. Do you think the powers that be will realise classroom doors may prove useful in offering better ventilation? ?

SueDonim Thu 03-Feb-22 19:54:30

Especially when people huff off home with their toys, Callistemon! ?

SueDonim Thu 03-Feb-22 19:55:31

I think that kind of logic might be beyond them, Oldbat. grin

Callistemon21 Thu 03-Feb-22 19:57:04

It's worrying if classrooms have no opening windows - is that legal!

I do remember trying to open a large window at college and gave it a smart tap with the palm of my hand.
The window fell out and I had 4 stitches in A&E.

Awww I'll miss you Alegrias. I always look to see what's got you in a frenzy of outrage and fury each day. But whilst you're having a rest, I've found this as a little keepsake to remind you of us.

Brilliant ????

Urmstongran Thu 03-Feb-22 20:47:50

The SNP:
“Let’s have a grown up discussion about this ... let’s cut the bottom off the doors.
Oh - what are those see through things on the other wall?”
?

Honestly, who would have thought she could have made Boris Johnson look good?

A lot of parents around my area are really astounded by this "half-baked scheme" but for most of my friends (mostly elderly) their concerns at the moment are about the new law regarding linked fire alarm which came into force this week. All houses in Scotland have to have linked fire alarms. One of my friends has paid over £400 to have her house complying with the new laws as she was concerned about her insurance being invalid if this was not done only for an announcement from the Scottish Government the day after it became law that compliance with this law will not be actively pursued. It had already been put back by the government for one year. I probably shouldn't be bringing this up on this thread but a lot of people are really concerned and worried about it as, with all the cuts and rises in the cost of living, they will struggle to find the money.

FarNorth Thu 03-Feb-22 21:17:13

Why not just wedge the door open?

Too sensible.
Also, some teachers may not do it. So cutting the doors will force them to have draughts regardless.
(I agree that ventilation is needed but open windows seem a better option.)

I haven't heard of this but today I was watching a video about Denmark. They are now going to live with the pandemic. This is with high infection rates but scientists, government and the Danish people all seemed to have worked together. Why can't this happen here?

Urmstongran Thu 03-Feb-22 21:22:00

Pepper I was convinced you were about to tell us that Denmark too were chopping classroom doors too!
Phew.

Zoejory Thu 03-Feb-22 21:23:18

Different thought processes, Pepper59

I don't think English children could cope with draughts round their ankles

I have experienced this actually. When I worked in a very old building. My ankles and lower legs were subjected to icy blasts due to ill fitting doors. Most discomfiting.

I hope that Nicola sees sense on this one.

Urmstongran Thu 03-Feb-22 21:25:37

Grayling that too beggars belief. Yes it must have been a huge cost and concern. I can understand your feelings on this.

Pepper59 Thu 03-Feb-22 21:27:44

Urmstongran, you made me laugh, thank you.

My GC studies and lives in Denmark and they and their contemporaries agree.

Everyone I know is living with the pandemic.
A Danish professor added to a report put together by other learned people from Johns Hopkins stating that the lockdowns didn’t make that much difference to the covid numbers.
Some of our MPS are calling for a debate on the tactics used to make us comply.
Look up the Nudge Department at No10.
