A LAB leak is now considered the most likely origin of the Covid pandemic “behind closed doors” of the Government, it has been claimed, after Boris Johnson signalled that security measures would be enhanced to prevent accidental escape.

On Monday, the Prime Minister told the House of Commons the UK Biosecurity Strategy would be refreshed to protect against “natural zoonosis and laboratory leaks” in a public acknowledgement of the threat from insecure research facilities.

There is mounting suspicion that Covid-19 leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology that had been experimenting on bat coronaviruses in the years before the virus first emerged in Wuhan city.

The Government has issued a call for evidence before drafting a new biosecurity strategy, which will deal with “accidental release and dual-use research of concern, where life science research is capable of being misapplied to do harm”.

Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, of Magdalene College, Cambridge, who has submitted evidence for the strategy, said: “The official view (within government) is that it is as likely as anything else to have caused the pandemic.”

“Behind closed doors most people think it’s a lab leak.” ?

I think that has been the opinion for sometime but it’s also known that the US contributed to the funding of some of the lab work

So did we (UK) sometime ago

But would it be China? It has been reported that Fauci paid China labs at Wuhan to research 'gain for function' on SARS viruses. Hotly disputed, of course.

I have said right from the start it originated in Wuhan and I often wonder if it was deliberate, but hey nobody dares confront China. They shut up that scientist, didn't they!

Dean Koontz's book "The Eyes of Darkness” - science fiction novel published in 1981 references a fictional “biological weapon” called “Wuhan-400” . Interesting read...

Front page news has to contain the following words -
Celeb(s),fan(s) and baby bump .

True Esmay.

I think this is still contentious. And the front page surely is Putin, a crazed autocrat who wants to rebuild USSR and has every weapon, his finger can annihilate all of us…

Tamayra - is that you Vladimore?

Tiggersuki Sat 26-Feb-22 19:39:03

I agree this has been mentioned before and the Chanel 4 program well worth a look.
But with an over populated world more pandemics will be on their way and we have to trust the advance in vaccines will help us.

From the New York Times today:
“ BREAKING NEWS
Two major scientific studies point to a market in Wuhan, China — not a lab in the same city — as the birthplace of the coronavirus pandemic.
Saturday, February 26, 2022 2:55 PM EST
Researchers concluded that the coronavirus was present in live mammals sold in the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, China, in late 2019. The research suggests that the virus very likely twice spilled over into people working or shopping at the market.
The researchers said they found no support for an alternate hypothesis that the coronavirus escaped from a lab in Wuhan.”

Chestnut Sat 26-Feb-22 23:37:20

Were these researchers Chinese by any chance?

US studies

Whitewavemark2 Sun 27-Feb-22 06:54:51

I have always understood that the virus came from almost certainly the wet market. The reason being my daughter a micro-biologist and genetic engineer has always maintained this to be the case, with an explanation that I have now forgotten.

The right wing in the USA say the silliest things don’t they?

Of course at the moment they, along with Murdoch , Trump and Fox News are supporting Putin.

You notice that the Murdoch press isn’t doing the same - that it because we are not so gullible in the U.K. and have far largely more sense then to believe the nonsense.

But frankly it matters not now from whence the virus came, what matters is that we continue to fight it with all the tools we have.

songstress60 Sun 27-Feb-22 08:21:39

I have always stated that this virus is China's fault but in the past I was shouted down and called racist. I think it was deliberate to thin the elderly population in China, but nobody dares confront China about it, because sadly they rule the world!

volver Sun 27-Feb-22 08:29:14

Ah, songstress knows! She's always stated it!

WWM2's daughter and all those other scientists are wrong.

Songstress knows! She just knows!

JaneD666 Sun 27-Feb-22 10:12:07

IT WAS NOT A LAB LEAK. (Yes, @volver, apparently we do need to shout.)

www.theguardian.com/world/2022/feb/26/coronavirus-wuhan-market-chinese-lab-studies

"The studies released on Saturday were co-authored by scientists in the US, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, the UK (Oxford, Edinburgh and Glasgow), Canada, the Netherlands and Belgium."

Why do so many people believe conspiracy theories, and information from unreliable sources (and I include our prime minister there)?

Urmstongran Sun 27-Feb-22 10:19:17

Well I stand by my opinion because if it was from the wet markets they opened them up again PDQ didn’t they!

GrannyGravy13 Sun 27-Feb-22 10:25:23

I think we have to realise that nobody can be 100% certain on this.

volver Sun 27-Feb-22 10:29:15

So whose opinion shall we lean towards?

Innumerable scientific investigations and views from trained microbiologists, or a bunch of random folk posting on social media with no facts at all but a lot of suspicions drawn from the Right Wing press?

Urmstongran Sun 27-Feb-22 10:37:15

I’m sticking with mine. Not all scientists think the wet markets were the cause! I’m with a different set of experts.
