Sorry to report that @ukhomeoffice is refusing entry to Ukrainians at Paris Gare du Nord seeking to join family in UK because they don’t have a visa. And not being helped to apply for a visa.

This thread is based on a tweet by a law firm which prides itself on its immigration work. The tweet is being treated as evidence of official government policy. Is it any more reliable than what you might read in the Daily Mail?

We are constantly being told at the moment on numerous threads on GN, that there is so much fake news on MSM, Facebook and Twitter…

Doodledog Sun 27-Feb-22 10:29:16

I saw that programme, and when Liz Truss was asked if we would take refugees she dodged the issue. Asked for a response to the fruit-picking tweet, she just said that she thought that it had been taken down, and she finished her interview by saying that this was a fight for freedom and democracy in Europe.

Clearly freedom and democracy are not important enough to her to shake her belief that we should not offer help and hospitality to women and children fleeing war, though.

It is deeply shameful that our Foreign Secretary refuses to say that our country will accept #Ukraine refugees. The Conservative Party has lost its compassion - simply appalling.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 27-Feb-22 10:36:20

Didn’t think Liz Truss was in charge of the Home Office.

Shameful that
@liztruss
hasn’t already changed visa rules so that Ukrainian refugees can come here.“This is something we’re looking at” isn’t good enough. Government has been predicting this crisis for weeks - why haven’t they prepared for this better?

I could go on.

Now say that the OP was wrong and doesn’t represent current government policy.

Didn’t think Liz Truss was in charge of the Home Office.

She was the government representative being interviewed about the situation on the BBC, though.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 27-Feb-22 10:45:39

I wouldn’t trust LT to represent anything.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 27-Feb-22 10:46:58

She is the face of the government. She makes that clear with all her ridiculous photos.

westendgirl Sun 27-Feb-22 10:47:13

I have contacted my M.P.

This is shaming and shameful. Surely we should all be standing together in condemnation of the lack of speedy action in this matter.

That really is a huge wriggle on behalf of "your" party GSM. Well tried. Liz Truss is part of the Governement and I expect most people regards her comments in that light.

Mollygo Sun 27-Feb-22 11:15:47

GSM, no it’s not. All I’d heard, till this post was that UK citizens with Ukraine dependents would be prioritised, but this certainly makes an eye catching headline.
I’ll write to my MP-not that I expect her to respond, but if it might help . . .

westendgirl Sun 27-Feb-22 11:16:19

What is Lizz Truss thinking of posing in that autocratic way by the flags of UK and Ukraine ?
What message does she think it gives to a people needing true support .?

GillT57 Sun 27-Feb-22 11:19:23

Ok. So far certain posters have chosen to argue that "Paris isn't that bad", "they are immigration law specialists" "she is not Home Office". When will you just accept that your chosen government is hard hearted and lying to you AGAIN? Some of you really need to look around you at your family and be thankful. Then give your heads a wobble

Maudi Sun 27-Feb-22 11:27:20

Do Wilson Solicitors give any details about these Ukrainians, are they actually fleeing the Ukraine or are they Ukraine citizens settled in another country and trying to beat the system to gain entry here. There are plenty of Ukrainians in Turkey, I witnessed a protest just now in Antalya. Obviously you can't just open Britain's borders you have to do some checks you would have to be very naive to think otherwise. Do Wilson solicitors actually exist or is this just a propaganda exercise to discredit Britain or more so the Tory party.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 27-Feb-22 11:32:12

Wilson’s do exist @wilsonllp.co.uk they specialise in immigration and family law, they are based in London.

They did, they also advised British people to leave a month ago, but like the chap from Hull, no we are miles away from the border´. You couldn’t make it up. I fully agree they should be able to bring in spouses to join families here, with without visa, and those Ukranians with families already here. Looking at the mess of the Afghanistan situation where we have not enough homes, and they are still living in hotels, not sure how this will pan out.

GillT57 Sun 27-Feb-22 11:38:48

Maudi. Bloody hell woman. Have you read or listened to anything on the news?

Maggiemaybe Sun 27-Feb-22 11:40:56

This might (I sincerely hope) be an individual case where things have gone wrong.

Thank you for the supportive Tweets. The matter has been taken up by the MP of the family member in the U.K. Hopefully a visa will be issued. @WilsonsLondon

Maggiemaybe Sun 27-Feb-22 11:43:18

Some concessions have been made. Let’s hope more will follow.

The UK government's attitude to refugees has been hostile for a long time, so I'm really not surprised at this. It is shameful.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 27-Feb-22 11:45:26

Pressure clearly helps.

Perhaps sufficient pressure will kick Patel’s ass and she will waive visas for what is going to be a European disaster, particularly if Thermobaric weapons are used.

I almost threw the remote at the TV.
She wasn't asked about a windfall tax. Disappointing.

The Tory party are doing a great job on their own to discredit Britain on the world stage, they don't need to employ anyone to do it Maudi. Why didn't you just Google like anyone can to check on the validity of Wilson Solicitors, must you always be so suspicious?

Maggiemaybe Sun 27-Feb-22 12:31:48

I wouldn’t class myself as unduly suspicious, but do think we should check anything we read or are told. Yes, Wilson Solicitors is a bona fide company. They were tweeting about one family or one person (see their later tweet - “Hopefully a visa will be issued”). I doubt they meant to confuse anyone, but it’s clear that some posters, and others who’ve responded on Twitter, thought they were saying that there’s a general block on all Ukrainians trying to get into the country.

So if you were a Ukrainian fleeing for your life and hopefully being given a temporary home with your relative in the U.K., how would you go about entry?
