Now I might be asking for trouble but I’m looking for information.

On two threads active today about politics, we’ve had posts very quickly about gender politics. I’m a bit in the dark and I tend to stay off the gender politics threads as they tend to get heated. (Yes, this is me, really. wink)

So I’m looking for information on this issue and why people are so fired up about it. No judgement please, I am just trying to understand this.

Absolute drivel whether you use one of those, or the GI Joe - Barbie rainbow scale.

I’ve never seen that before.
That is so funny.
I guess they didn’t use Paul and Sindy because her ‘gender’ would have been a lot more difficult to hide!

Doodledog I saw the Genderbread Person on Twitter! (so absolute guaranteed truth) posted by someone who said it had recently been used in their workplace training.

Yes, I saw it recently, too. Then someone rocked up to say that it was out of date, we are no longer born into a sex class (it is assigned), so the Gender Unicorn is the currently acceptable model. At that point, I logged off and watched Eastenders.

I listened to any questions this afternoon. Members of different parties were on the panel.
On the question of sport the fluff was about wanting it to be fair to all- with no explanation of how they’d achieve that for all bit. They passed the buck to the sporting bodies to avoid answering for themselves. Then just waffled about how hard being trans is (I get that, it’s pretty hard being a female too) and a quick round of applause for JW who, if he gets re-elected would appear on statistics as a . . .
Then safe spaces for women which are already set out under laws which allow men (GRC says ‘women’ covers men) and so are not spaces for females at all.
Tweaking the meaning of the word woman to include anyone who feels like it is one of the biggest misogynistic farces this century!

It really is. I can't imagine how betrayed our great-granddaughters will feel when they realise that their lives could have been so very different if our generation (and the younger ones, to be fair - they are often worse than ours) had stood up to the bullying and refused to co-operate. The longer we leave it, the worse it is going to get.

An excellent article in The Times, explaining the whole trans situation and how we got to where we are now.

Yes it is an excellent article FarNorth, thank you for sharing.

This really stood out for me "There is talk among activists and transgender "allies" of being "on the right side of history", a claim that almost always reveals the vanity of people more concerned with re casting themselves as good guys at pivotal moments in counter culture than with solving actual problems".

As the article says there was no reclassification by the civil rights as to whose black and whose white or who is gay and who is straight, so why are we having this re classification of 'what is a woman' especially as there appears to be many who are unable to answer?

Doodledog Sun 03-Apr-22 13:01:39

Yes, the self-righteousness makes it even more galling.

Thank you FarNorth. It makes several interesting points, but Smileless2022 you summed up the most telling points.

Another excellent, but long, article - this time from Kathleen Stock.

'The Fictional World of Transactivism"

"When it comes to people who aren’t trans, the typical motivations for immersion in trans activism’s foundational fictions seem of four main sorts. First, there’s a desire to be kind to trans people, without a lot of further thought about what that might look like. Second, there’s those who want to seem kind because of the social capital it brings these days. Third, there’s a desire to avoid ostracisation, since you know you will be socially punished if you don’t. And fourth, there’s a desire to undo human sexed categories with the power of words, because you heard from some whackjob academic that this was a coherent and politically desirable thing to aim for."

Thanks FarNorth. I read that article when my DD sent it to me as well and it rings ever more true.
Those classifications so accurately match what I hear people say or read that people write, on the news, in the media, on social media, and even here on GN, and all of them could be suffixed by without a lot of further thought about what that might look like
There’s a fifth idea not mentioned by Kathleen Stock, ensuing from all those above when it comes to those who aren’t trans, and that’s the opportunity to bully and dismiss females by pursuing any or all of the typical motivations KS cites.

Ms Stock has written an article for the DM today:

I hope you can access this link to 'Jane' on a phone in to Rees-Mogg.
Jane makes clear the dreadful position we are in.
