Johnson's offensive speech at the Conservative Party Spring Conference.

He compared the "battles of Brexit" to those of Ukraine. If you can't believe your eyes, yes, he compared the "battles of Brexit" to those of Ukraine.

This speech was inexcusable. I saw it earlier and was horrified. Then you remember these are the tactics the New Right use - appealing to the lowest common denominator with Boris humour. This is the lowest he could sink. I can't see how anyone could find it funny but he was grinning away at the attendees.

They may have had to be seen attending to Covid, the cost of living crisis and the War in Ukraine but much of that, like Gove's temper tantrum, is PR designed window dressing. They were and still are only interested in politics, in winning the next election.

This wicked and immoral party will pretend Covid is over - goodness it's almost like no one died. Their MPs will tell you the only people who need food banks need to go out and get a job or increased hours. And although they will condemn the destructions of people's lives in Ukraine, they will do their level best to make it difficult, if not impossible, for them to come here.

Meanwhile, you can watch a very well made programme on Channel 4 tonight called "What if Putin goes Nuclear". At least some people are taking this seriously.

There is time between now and the next election Maizie and Casdon. A lot will depend on how people have felt the current issues have affected them. That election may well depend more on what Rishi Sunak does than anything Johnson can say.

I really don't find it an offensive comment. Silly, ill-thought out, and not really relevant, but not offensive. Too much fuss is being made of it.

Brexit and Ukraine are similar in that both had Russian involvement

Urmstongran Sun 20-Mar-22 09:20:38

The economic forecast is pretty dire, true. But I believe it’s going to be the same over all of Europe owing to energy prices - food & fuel prices will hoik everything up. Some economists say we’re about to hit a recession of sorts. But come election time, in 2 years, voters will see it’s not just the UK with higher prices so their voting will reflect that I think.

Urmstongran Sun 20-Mar-22 09:21:46

You never miss a chance vegansrock! The world loves a trier.

When Boris says these things he’s talking to brexiteers, to the people who are glad we’re out of the EU. He’s not talking to remainers who wouldn’t vote for him no matter what he said.
He’s talking to his people.

25Avalon Sun 20-Mar-22 09:24:22

Who or what is the viable alternative to Johnson one has to ask? Is this not part of the reason he is still there? Lewensky is far more like Churchill than Johnson.

You mean like Putin does?

Not offensive ? To compare an invaded country being bombed
To a vote to Leave the EU ? Seriously ?

Well Berlin has supplied just one-fifth of the missiles it promised in response to the Russian invasion, with the lack of weapons causing increasing frustration inside Ukraine. This was highlighted yesterday. So overall, I think Boris is playing a blinder with support from Ben Wallace. I think the UK has much to be proud of. The Ukrainians seem to think so too.

Why are we so quick to put ourselves down? Some on here constantly look for the negatives. Seems to cheer them up.

I agree, Urmstongran and have read that many of those missiles Germany did supply, don't work. Their initial offer was 500 helmets.....

An idiotic, thoughtless comment, what we have come to expect from Johnson. Totally unsuited to the post he is in!

This is such an empty argument. Should we stick with this useless leader because off the top of our heads we can't think of anyone better? Is that what the UK has come to?

By the way, do the man the honour of getting his name right.

Zelensky.

Lewinsky (sp) is a different matter altogether, and certainly nothing like Churchill

That is not the point here ! Yes fine talk to brexiteers etc but it’s the insensitivity (to put it mildly) of the comparison to a war torn country. I don’t understand how you can’t see that…sorry I don’t mean to be rude but this thread isn’t really about Brexit versus remain.
I’m shocked

Then I dread to think what the mentality of ‘his people’ is like…

This is really despicable, you know? Actually you may not know, but it is.

Have you any idea of how international relations works? Any at all? Any concept of how Germany have completely revised their post war defence strategies? Any concept of how "I have read" just points to the fact that mostly what you read is incorrect, right wing propaganda?

Well, now we know Sunak’s cunning plan. Massive increase in state pension. So, we’re definitely heading towards an election. Wish I was rich enough to tell them to stick it where the sun don’t shine….if now isn’t the right time to change leader because of the world being in crisis, why is it the right time for the government to be thinking about an election?

Urmstongran Sun 20-Mar-22 09:39:11

Well the USA voted for Joe Biden volver! ‘Anyone but Trump’ and look how THAT is panning out.

I couldn’t vote for Labour.
I just look at Drakeford in Wales and despair. Sadiq Khan ruining London with its unaddressed knife crime and woke Metropolitan Police. David Lammy (oh no), Angela (scum quote) Rayner, the bruiser Emily Thornberry, Keir (the kneeler) Starmer. Yikes.

I think you mean Zelenskyy. Othewise you could mean Lewenski but that is a whole other can of worms.

I do think a man leading a country which is defending our freedoms as much as theirs should have the right name.

25Avalon Sun 20-Mar-22 09:41:07

Well Volver to me and others it is not an empty argument but real concern about our politics today. I’m afraid it is what the UK has come to.

Why do you keep changing the subject and bringing up irrelevant facts?

Is it a directive from HQ?

Zelensky

Zelensky isn't right either, volver

Zelensky himself has it spelled "Zelenskyy" on his passport. In May 2019 his administration said he preferred that spelling when his name was transliterated from the Cyrillic to the Latin alphabet.

Zelenskyy

foxie48 Sun 20-Mar-22 09:42:43

He may have been talking to those who voted for Brexit but many of them must cringe hearing/reading such twaddle. He lacks any integrity or statesmanship. We've had some pretty dreadful PMs over the years but he wins the prize for the worst!

Urmstongran Sun 20-Mar-22 09:43:45

I didn’t change the subject volver. You brought up a response saying why do we not change the PM when others (not me at that point) said there’s little competition.

aggie Sun 20-Mar-22 09:44:12

What massive pension increase ?
Johnston is trying to rally the troops , he hasn’t noticed that we are not at war actually , he is so into his Churchill impersonation
