Roe v Wade

The USA’s Supreme Court have approved a (draft) judgement to overturn Roe v Wade decision. If this is passed, abortion (no matter what the circumstances) immediately becomes illegal in at least 22 states.

They don’t hate abortion. They hate women. Misogyny is at the heart of every right wing movement. Trump’s Republicans and Johnson’s Tories.

I am so glad I am old because this world is becoming unbearable to live in.

Absolutely right Dickens.

Great post Dickens.

Message from America (one person - my niece)

This is the draft of an opinion that is being talked about. But it is very scary. They may make the decision this June or July - before the summer holiday.

I replied that if this were our government, it would have been leaked to see what response it got. The reply: I'm sure it's the same here".

I don’t come on here often but (most) of the women posting on here have given me an incentive to do so, thank you.

MayBee70 Tue 03-May-22 13:36:28

This from a country that still allows child marriage and also executions in some states….

I am deeply depressed by this but not surprised. It was pretty clear that with the death of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Trump could shift the balance with his nomination of Amy Coney Barrett so it was only ever going to be a question of time! Sadly I'm sure this is what will pass and it will lead to states bringing in their own anti abortion laws. Texas has already begun!

Mind you funny how the left are all up in arms about this but when it comes to trans women (basically biological men) trampling all over women’s sports and their rights, the left are all for that. Pick a side why don’t you.

Well, I don't know about that.

I absolutely hate the way it's going with TW trampling all over the rights of biological females.

I think women should have the absolute right to choose whether to incubate a foetus for up to 9 months.

And, I loathe Boris Johnson - simply because I cannot stand self serving, hypocritical liars, which he is.

Perhaps I'm just confused. ?

I have a friend who had an abortion before she was married, 'persuaded' to go through with it by her now husband and still regrets the decision.

We have friends who 'persuaded' their D to have an abortion several years ago and are at a loss as to why she thinks about her unborn child every year on what could have been the child's birthday.

What is bad about this is that other people, for whatever reason, have put pressure on a woman; considering their own interests rather than those of the woman concerned.

No one should be 'persuaded' to either have, or not to have, an abortion.

If a woman is in doubt, she needs counselling by someone who is impartial and uninvolved, and who will seek to find out the effect either choice might have on the woman concerned.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 03-May-22 15:15:22

Let's not get sidetracked into how/ why/ when women seek abortion. Attempts to procure an end to a pregnancy go back to the dawn of history, and this won't change.
The question is, do we vote for safe, legal procedures or drive the activity undergound, with all of the risks to the woman. And - for people who talk of the rights of the child, bear in mind that there may be other children who would like their mother home safe.

DiamondLily Tue 03-May-22 15:38:01

In an ideal world, contraception would be used to prevent pregnancy.

Or, the "morning after" pill sought to prevent any development.

However, we don't live in an ideal world, so a woman should have the absolute right to decide what to do with their own bodies.

It has nothing to do with anyone else - whether it's other women, men, religious organisations/groups, rights groups, or politicians.?

As for America....well, my son, DIL, and s/grandson live there, so I know a bit about their healthcare/welfare systems..

They bang on about the rights of unborn children, yet when the child arrives, God help the parents, and child, if that child needs a lot of healthcare, and they're not insured. They won't get what is needed.

Also, God help the parents, and child, if the parents need any sort of welfare. These American pro-life fanatics are quite cheerful about the child suffering then, because their welfare system is pitiful..

The religious groups, as ever, do nothing useful.

Hypocrites. They protect the unborn foetus, but care nothing for the living child.

VioletSky Tue 03-May-22 15:52:41

I sincerely hope not.

Once again completely put women in a terrible place while the men, who are never held respinsible for unwanted pregnancy as they should be, get to choose their futures.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 03-May-22 15:58:42

Absolutely, DiamondLily.

Care for disabled children varies hugely in the US. Massachusetts has some of the best child care and support for disabled children in the world. I visited the Boston children's hospital 20+ years ago where a relative's premature twins (one with cerebral palsy) were cared for. Their mum called them her million dollar babies and no amount of health insurance could have covered their costs.
There are states where they wouldn't have got the care they needed but at the time they probably wouldn't have got it in this county either.
I abhor the US health system but it does have areas of excellence.

Norah Tue 03-May-22 16:08:36

They also carry guns and assault rifles, believe in the death penalty, and abhor social programs. Ridiculous.

Do you remember that photo' of Trump in the Oval Office (his first day I believe) signing an abortion-related document (when he signed a ban on federal money going to international groups that perform or provide information on abortions)... surrounded by MEN?

As Martin Belam (writer, journalist) said on TWITTER...

As long as you live you'll never see a photograph of 7 women signing legislation about what men can do with their reproductive organs

Trump, the would-be 'pussy-grabber' turned from pro-abortion to anti... and muttered something about punishing women who had abortions if they broke the Law. But quickly retracted the comment after much criticism.

Are such people even qualified to take part in civil debate about these issues...?

I don’t know how long after unprotected sex women might take it. Possibly fertilisation might have taken place? I don’t know, just wondering …

I believe you have to take the morning after pill within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It isn't 100% effective but I would think a much better option to do before all the hormones kick in.

SueDonim Tue 03-May-22 17:10:35

What baffles me is that the white supremacists seem hugely supportive of stopping terminations but the end result will be an increase of the kind of people they love to hate on - black people, poor people and disabled people who need Welfare.

Rich, white women will always have access to abortion and contraception. The less fortunate- not so much. ?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 03-May-22 17:17:38

Very true. Zero strategic thought.

Girls/women who are raped by someone they know, a stranger or a relative will be forced to give birth. What happens to the men involved ? NOTHING !

Why is it always the women who the price ?

Mostly in the South and Mid West, I think certain exceptions would apply - like rape and incest.

... but it's a sorry turn of events. Taking women back to the start-line AGAIN...

silverlining48 Tue 03-May-22 18:29:23

Thank goodness I have never been in this position but helped a friend in mid 60s London when the only choice was illegal back street.
We witnessed for ourselves how frightening, dangerous, thoroughly unpleasant and painful this was and she was never able to become pregnant again.
She is 76, no children or grandchildren. A huge price to pay.

Women have always found a way, whether dangerous or safe; and always will, surely we all prefer safe.

Urmstongran Tue 03-May-22 18:58:51

And let’s not forget that any man can (and sometimes does) just walk away from ‘a situation’ if it suits them.

TheodoraP Tue 03-May-22 19:24:45

You say this world is becoming unbearable I think any un born baby would agree with you. I know they don't have a voice but let's just imagine for a moment that they do and let's ask them some questions

Dear un born baby your Mother wishes to end your growth your existence your life how do you feel about that and if the decision was yours what would you decide

And so I believe that most if not all un born babies would most probably opt for living and not be aborted

Does that make sense

volver Tue 03-May-22 19:29:32

Ok, offensiveness warning, for those so inclined.

They're not unborn babies. They are bundles of cells. So you can't ask them questions, even hypothetically.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 03-May-22 19:30:16

The USA is so divided at the moment and if this goes through it will make the division fundamentally worse.
