Local Elections

Looks like a Tory wipeout in London and good results for the Lib Dems and Greens so far. Interesting to see how Scotland and NIreland vote.

NIreland is an Assembly election.
If voters don't think carefully we will be stuck with no Assembly.
Our system needs reformed.

Labour have gained Wandsworth but more remarkably Westminster!!

Oh! And Barnet.

Southampton has also gone Labour.

Now be interesting to see how the Liberals have done in the leafy shires? Labour can’t hope to get many of those councils, most of the gains by labour were got 4 years ago, but the Libs should make significant gains.

I knew Wandsworth was at risk but had no inkling about Westminster.

This is a 'Portillo' moment!

TBH I’m not sure, I would like to see significant gains in places like the red wall, although to a degree I guess it can be balanced by many lost Tory council seats in the south. For example Worthing, in the south which has always been Tory, could well go labour, and I suspect that there will be other labour wins in the south.

However, I don’t see an easy election victory at the moment.

If I was Johnson,and wasn’t booted out by his spineless MPs I would go for an early general election, perhaps as early as the autumn.

The economy is only going to get a lot worse over at least the next 2-3 years or more, and it would make sense to go for it sooner rather than later.

He hasn’t got anything to lose, he has the media fully backing him, and the red wall is still supporting him, but this won’t last as they take big hits from the economy.

That is significant I think.

Not particularly surprised about Wandsworth but to all appearances they had a pretty good Conservative council with low council tax
It's OK protesting about the government but voters could shoot themselves in the foot if Labour do not manage it so well.
This was after all a council election and a vote on how well they are doing not a general election

I agree with WW, as a Labour voter, it isnt enough, its ok but not amazing.

How the rest of the country goes who knows, but Labour taking Wandsworth and Westminster is amazing considering how long they've been in Tory control and so identified with the Thatcher brand of politics.

They have the lowest Council Taxes by far but voters saw past this.

I have no idea how busy they are as I always vote by post. We only had 4 to choose from and it wasn't a difficult choice for me.

Seems Labour have lost seats too around the country. Lib Dem’s and Greens have made gains. All sounds a bit of a mish-mash. Has Boris been given the bloody nose everyone was predicting? I’m off to read the newspapers!

So far only 71 out of 200 councils have declared.

In the south - labour win Rottingdean - always been Tory

Lib Dem’s win Hull after a decade of Labour rule!

In the south- Portsmouth Labour gain.

The Torys have lost control of Colchester, which has always been a coalition. I expect we'll have a Lib/Lab council. Our Ward is completely Green now.

Conservatives hold both Basildon (gained 1 councillor) and Thurrock.

My council must be having a lay-in, awaiting results.

I hope you are right Riverwalk, god knows, perhaps its my natural pessimism .

The BBC News is a lot slower than you at getting the latest results WWM2, where are you finding them?

I can’t help wondering what’ll happen to Wandsworth’s council tax now - always about the lowest in the country.
We live in an adjacent borough with just about the highest.

Well, I follow my Labour MP on twitter, and he is putting stuff on.

Colchester - Tory leader loses his seat to Libs.

Our local MP now is Conservative, and I’m not on Twitter, that must be where I’m going wrong! I’m appreciating your updates, it’s good to be ahead of the news.
