The Ministerial code is to be watered down

Pippa Crerar reports that the PM has watered down the ministerial code allowing ministers to break the rules without resigning. He has also blocked a bid to give his ethics advisor the power to investigate him. In addition, he also dismissed calls from Lord Geidt who asked for the power to launch an independent investigation of behaviour in the wake of the Downing Street flat row.
Anybody else picked this up?

I'm very doubtful about whether the Queen or protests will have any effect. I hope there are some decent people in public life (MPs, former MPs, people with a wide following) getting their heads together and planning how to make the public aware of what's happening because I doubt most people do know what's going on. The message needs to be simple - the majority of people are disgusted at "Partygate" and people need to be aware that there are plans to downgrade accountability. They need to exploit the idea that there's an "elite" getting away with things they can't. If Conservatives think they will lose seats in the next GE, they'll act.

some other wording he has changed in Ministerial code, he refers to my ministers rather than The Ministers of the Queen, its being said in it is a more Presidential style. I am not even anti a presidential system, but that is up to the People, not one person.

That's the kind of think which needs to be made crystal clear to the public - and why it matters. While Johnson's popularity is dropping like as tone, I have the impression that people are still broadly positive about the Queen (if not the monarchy as a principle).

That's the scariest thing yet basicallygrace12.

He has delusions and ambitions beyond anything we have thought of yet.

This needs to be as widely reported as possible so that everyone with a vote has everything they need to make an informed decision come the general election.

"a stone" - not "as tone"

Well I would contact my MP but after being extremely rude to me he has completely blocked me. Like his leader he can't cope with people telling him what they think of him.

growstuff Fri 27-May-22 20:42:57

My MP has been conspicuously silent about all this. She has a huge majority and cares about little apart from her career. There's no point writing to her, but her voters need to be aware what's happening. If she thinks they won't for her, she'll act.

No, the Westminster parliament is the parliament of the UK (with certain powers devolved), whether you like it or not. Now is not the time to be arguing the case for independence - this is too important.

paddyanne isn’t this proportional representation?
I.e. 5 million Scots + 50 million English voters?

Re the ministerial code. Does it not have to be agreed by say the House of Commons, or a committee, or something other than the PM on his own? If everyone is howling about it, surely it won’t stand up.

Sorry I’m distracted by other stuff at home/family tonight.

growstuff Fri 27-May-22 21:20:12

The House of Commons has a huge Conservative majority and we've seen before that too many of them will say one thing, but won't follow through.

growstuff Fri 27-May-22 21:21:03

Of course it will "stand up", if MPs think they'll keep their jobs.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 27-May-22 21:29:03

Truly, words fail me - and that is very unusual.

MayBee70 Fri 27-May-22 21:30:03

And, yet again it’s announced when parliament goes into recess…he’s going to watch himself…becoming far too predictable…

MayBee70 Fri 27-May-22 22:27:05

Waste of time writing to my MP about this. Will try The Speaker. I want an answer as to how Johnson can just do this….

growstuff Fri 27-May-22 22:33:17

This needs a cross party rebellion, including the Lords, but it needs to be seen as the "people"'s response. The word Volk people is the buzzword.

Lovetopaint037 Fri 27-May-22 22:37:36

Surely such changes have to be voted on in Parliament or has that b………std altered that without consultation. I am depressed and sick to my stomach at not only what he is doing but the MPs who are supporting him. Don’t they realise they are tarring themselves with the same filthy brush. Surely we should take to the streets and shout our disgust with this usurper of decency..
