I'm embarrassed by those saying that refugees should stay in the first country they come to. All countries have a moral obligation to take refugees, fleeing war-torn countries. Countries with a substantial armaments industry like US, UK and France have an even greater moral obligation, because they gain from war.
VioletSky I’m not denying it’s heartbreaking for some. Fleeing persecution. I get that. But you must acknowledge that not all migrants are. Some are economic migrants (nothing wrong with that either) but they’ve made choices in their mode of transportation. There’s no rush for them. They are perfectly safe in France. They won’t be the ‘frightened faces’ though that you poignantly describe to tug at my heartstrings. They are the ones dying to get here for other reasons. Literally in some cases.
It has not been confirmed this will only be single men, just that they will be among the first.
My son is a single man.
Some people believe what they read in the Daily Mail, the Express and the Telegraph. They believe the government. They are not interested enough to find out for themselves whether they are being told the truth by reading more widely, listening to court judgements, seeing what international media reports, what expert bodies say etc.etc. I despair. It’s not us who’s being naive, a lot of us try very hard to be objective.
Honestly, if you think that being sent to a destination not of your choosing as if you have no human rights at all wont be a frightening experience then you either dont have enough empathy to understand fear or you just dont have empathy for other buman beings
They've paid thousands of euros to people smugglers that has been scaped together by whole families and friends in the hope they can have a better life .Maybe send some money home to help those they've left behind to make an escape too or improve the situation where they are.Its not hard to see if you can get past the young fit men thing ,the older and younger members wont be fit to undertake that journey ,,,so the ones who are ...do
violetSky if the migrants who are not fleeing persecution but are wanting ‘a better life’ in the UK, I’m sure they can come legally? Via a visa? Like others do?
No need to pay thousands to people traffickers to be smuggled into the shores of Kent. Once word gets round (and it will) that the end destination will be Rwanda, these young men will have a choice - to stay and make their life as good as possible where they are as it’s not worth the inherent dangers to end up where they don’t want to be. Or apply legally. Come with papers.
You really dont know much about all this at all do you?
Anyway we've yet to see the first flight take off yet to Rwanda, I'll believe it when I see it.
I say they come over from France. They are safe there, not persecuted. They ought to wait in line with everyone else to apply for residency in this country.
I despair. They cannot apply from France BECAUSE THE UK REFUSES TO SET UP ANY MONITORING / APPLICATION CENTRES THERE.
Please read the legislation. They can apply for asylum in their own country (which is generally impossible because if it was safe to stay there they would not be refugees) or they can apply when they reach the UK.
Those are the only two options.
Providing safe legal routes from overseas would deal with all the issues many people on this thread say they are concerned about: trafficking would become unnecessary for bona fide refugees; thus illegal immigration (ie not refugees) via channel crossings could be more effectively policed; and economic and family migrants could be steered to the appropriate visa programme for a decision.
Well I d rather a refugee was here than a racist
DiamondLily:
Sweden are talking to Rwanda and Ghana about sending some of their asylum seekers there
I read the Swedish papers and have not read this. How did you find out about it?
“The government is determined to continue to crack down on the evil trade in such trafficking, whose perpetrators have no regard for human life," said the home secretary.
No, not Priti Patel - but Jack Straw in June 2000 when 58 migrants suffocated in the back of a lorry as they were smuggled across the English Channel.

Ouch. ?
In my view everyone applauding what Patel is doing is a racist. Nothing else makes sense.

After a day of reading some of the views on this thread I was feeling pretty downhearted. Then I saw this and it reminded me there are generous-hearted people in the world who will stop at nothing in order to welcome others with open arms and make them feel valued and safe. For anyone else feeling like I did today, I hope this restores faith.

Some of us know very well what it's like when a government says that some people are 'illegal' and deports them to another country. 1944: Martin Rosen (Rozen) 'legally' arrested in France, 'legally' deported to a camp in another country. Never seen or heard of again.
“Hundreds block vehicle transporting man arrested for immigration offences”
Footage shows around 200 protesters sitting on the ground in front of the Police van in Peckham.
He overstayed his visa. Police turn up at his house this afternoon to arrest him.
But Mob rules it seems.
And so we proceed along the road to being a failed state.
A woman, who gave her name only as Nicola - and who is an activist with the south London arm of Stand Up To Racism, said police "gave up" trying to arrest people at the scene.
“Police tried to arrest a number of activists at the front” she said.
I don’t know why we bother sometimes trying to uphold law & order in this country of ours. “Come one, come all” eh?

Tell that to Johnson, he’s good at upholding the law.

I don’t like it but I can’t stop you.

Good stuff. I think that it is a good idea to counteract all the hate with uplifting things people in the U.K. have done that belies all the worst of us.

My post was as a reaction to what I had seen on twitter, interesting that you thought it was directed at you though
Well, if the police can't enforce the law then what's the point having laws? Sudan springs to mind.
