Just that really.

Traditionally - no

Morally - right

Legally - nothing stopping him.

But don’t forget that we don’t really know what was said, or indeed if anything was said.

DiamondLily Sat 11-Jun-22 10:19:42

No. Politicians are elected, royals are not. They should stay out of politics - whatever the subject.

BlueBelle Sat 11-Jun-22 10:23:13

Yes yes yes

Anniebach Sat 11-Jun-22 10:24:43

Yes

DillytheGardener Sat 11-Jun-22 10:27:11

This case yes, the Sovereign holds the title 'Defender of the Faith and Supreme Governor of the Church of England, and as the king in waiting, this in Christian act needs to be protested.

No.

Royalist on here never have a problem when he opines publicly on modern architecture, farming, environment, etc. "He'll make a good king, blah blah".

He used to write many letters to the Blair government with his opinions; not sure if he still does this.

He shouldn't interfere in politics but it's inevitable that his private view on this egregious plan has been leaked.

maddyone Sat 11-Jun-22 10:29:48

No. Charles is supposed to keep out of politics. But did he even say this? We don’t know that he did. A ‘source’ apparently leaked it and it was said during a private conversation. If it happened.

maddyone Sat 11-Jun-22 10:31:21

If Charles involves himself in politics in the future, we may find ourselves on the road to being a republic which will suit me.

M0nica Sat 11-Jun-22 10:31:52

I do not think he made any official announcement. Just something he said privately was overheard and repeated.

He may have to be officially entirely non-partisan, but as an intelligent and educated man he cannot stop himslef considering issues and having private views on them. He has a reputation for being humane and concerned about social issues, even if he is not allowed to espoused them publically.

icanhandthemback Sat 11-Jun-22 10:33:02

No, he's supposed to be apolitical. I think it is a very slippery slope for him to take as future monarch.

GagaJo Sat 11-Jun-22 10:33:24

I don't like the bloke. Weak, pampered etc. However, on this, I think he's spot on. Someone, somewhere has to stop this car crash of a government.

Plus, they were private remarks. In theory.

No.

Are you always so unequivocal on his expressed views?

No. Politicians are elected, royals are not. They should stay out of politics - whatever the subject.

We grans aren't elected, either. Do we have to stay out of politics?

By convention he was wrong to allow it to be 'leaked' (which he clearly must have done).

Naturally I agree with his view on Rwanda.

If he were actually king, would he be able to express this view in his regular audience with the PM?

maddyone Sat 11-Jun-22 10:41:14

It’s not about his views on Rwanda or anything else for that matter, it’s about whether Charles should ‘allow’ his views to be leaked. If he did.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 11-Jun-22 10:41:47

I replied to the specific question posed Riverwalk.

greenlady102 Sat 11-Jun-22 10:43:05

He was on TV around the time of the previous jubilee saying in effect that he knew that when he was king he would have to stop airing his views so publicly. Like all of us he is entitled to say what he thinks privately. He either spoke in the wrong place, or he has a disloyal friend, or the papers made it up (but I doubt that) If he leaked on purpose then he is an idiot and I expect his mother thinks so too. Whatever you think of the Rwanda plan, and I will keep my opinion to myself, the Royal family should stay out of politics.

maddyone Sat 11-Jun-22 10:43:53

Can anyone imagine the furore if this leak had come from the Queen? Or any leak had come from the Queen? He can sort of get away with it as heir but what when he becomes King?

RichmondPark Sat 11-Jun-22 10:45:11

Nigel Farage said "Unless Prince Charles wants to destroy the monarchy he had better shut up fast."

That's the Nigel Farage who said, "It is time for truth and free speech to prevail."

Only someone with a heart of stone would support the Rwanda plan so I am pleased we know where Prince Charles stands on this.

ElaineI Sat 11-Jun-22 10:47:57

Don't know what the rules are but he is right.

I replied to the specific question posed Riverwalk.

So it's not a point of principle that he shouldn't speak out, just not on this matter. OK.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 11-Jun-22 10:51:36

Don’t twist my words. He shouldn’t be getting involved in politics, ok?

maddyone Sat 11-Jun-22 10:56:54

I agree with you GSM. Our royal family are in situ by common consent. Any interference in politics will cause problems. He should take his cue from his mother who as far as I know, has never expressed her views politically. He has interfered before. As he is now nearer the throne he should be very careful about expressing his views. Whether or not the public support his views is immaterial because he should not be expressing them.

LauraNorderr Sat 11-Jun-22 10:57:03

As a future monarch he is wrong to make his political views known.
As a human being and supposedly a Christian he is right to let it be known just how morally wrong this Rwanda policy is.
Surely he’s a human being first.
