There are individual position papers to come but I thought some might be interested in reading the this.

Be prepared for a pile on by the usual suspects! I no longer want to be tethered to a country which has such awful people in charge at Westminster. Which treats refugees so shamefully. Which has such contempt for the laws of the land which it set. Why not Scotland indeed.

DaisyAnne Tue 14-Jun-22 12:22:46

I haven't commented because I haven't yet read it Grandmabatty. (The thread heading is the title of the paper) I hope people will read it before they comment. A culture of opinion based on ignorance doesn't seem to do the country any good.

I think it will be interesting to read in relation to the whole UK too.

Thanks DaisyAnne, that's saved me looking for it because I do want to read it. I'm just watching the Press Conference which is about to finish.

I'm sure you'll get the usual comments here...too poor, too wee, too stupid.

Gird your loins!

Thanks again.

I've supported Independence for 55 years ,I hope we get it before I die waiting .
There is absolutely no reason to think that Scotland cant be a successful country ruling ourselves. We are a remarkably wealthy small nation that has to hand our revenue to WM and gets pocket money back .Yet our government can and does do good things for the people of the country on that limited budget
WE dont have a black hole/debt whatever you decide to call it, we live within a balanced budget year after year after year .
Seceding countries are NOT obliged to take on debts accrued by the nations they leave so its WM's debt .
We do however OWN @10% of ALL the UK' s wealth ....because WE paid for it .
The oil .gas and renewables are in Scottish waters so are soley ours and are of interest to the EU who have already said they would be happy to partner with us in our Hydrogen programme in particular..

Lets get Independence before Westminster bleeds us dry

I love a bit of serious and considered debate.

AGAA4 Tue 14-Jun-22 13:19:13

I wish Wales could be independent too but sadly not an option. There isn't a huge worldwide demand for leeks.

Kandinsky Tue 14-Jun-22 13:33:51

I’ve never understood the anger over Scottish independence - I mean it’s Scotland itself who rejected independence.
I doubt many people in England could give a toss if Scotland left.

Urmstongran Tue 14-Jun-22 14:50:29

Actually I think that Scotland is entitled to a second vote because Brexit was a major change since the last election and it would be counter productive to enter into bitter legal quarrel between our countries. If the Scottish people once again reject the call for independence, which I hope they do, she has said she would resign. And we can put this to bed once and for all.

Allsorts Tue 14-Jun-22 14:53:40

Grandma batty, I didn’t know Scotland had such an open door policy on immigration. You have so much land unused that it’s no problem I suppose. Well done you. If you want independence, which I think a lot don’t, that’s fine but no more money from Westminster.

Blossoming Tue 14-Jun-22 15:03:15

I always find this a difficult subject, having a foot in both camps so to speak. I would hate for the UK to be broken up but while we have such an incompetent uncaring party in government in Westminster things won’t improve. Thanks for the link DaisyAnne, I may move back across the border!

DiamondLily Tue 14-Jun-22 15:12:04

If Scotland want independence, then fine, let them go for it.

The same with Northern Ireland and Wales.

Perhaps it's time we all stood alone, financially, and in every other way.?

You’d be wrong Kandinsky. In the last YouGov survey, 46% of English people wanted Scotland to remain in the UK.

Urmstongran Tue 14-Jun-22 15:22:51

Goodness, that was a wordy document to read. And more to be set out apparently in the pathway to another referendum next year.

This struck a chord:
“An independent Scotland could not be transformed to match the success of the comparator countries overnight.”

Reminds me of Brexit... ? in that changes made take a while to bed in. Those on the sidelines who don’t vote (or didn’t vote as in the case of Brexit) can be quite vociferous in their condemnation of events afterwards. Be prepared for this Scotland if you vote to Leave Us.

As I said earlier, if you go, will we have to have either a hard border, or a “Scottish Protocol’ situation in due course? (if the EU allow you to rejoin - some think not eg Catalonia).

DiamondLily Tue 14-Jun-22 15:37:55

Nicola Sturgeon admits there may be border problems:

Hear, Hear,I just wish they would get it and we could all carry on as normal. Without the constant bleating.

DiamondLily Tue 14-Jun-22 15:43:29

To be honest, I don't think the English give it that much thought beyond letting them do as they like.

They did work out, last time, that if England had also voted on Scot's independence, then it would probably have succeeded.

But, give them another vote and let the chips land where they do.

volver Tue 14-Jun-22 15:51:10

We love chips. And deep fried Mars Bars.

Yammy Tue 14-Jun-22 15:53:51

Let them have it then wait for the border checks. Queues from Gretna to Carlisle and south and down the A1 from Berwick. All the Border MP's on the English side are Conservative, are they going to make it easy?

volver Tue 14-Jun-22 15:57:48

We have a plan to put the border from Cairnryan to Cockburnspath via Peebles, but its a secret. Don't tell anyone.?

Urmstongran Tue 14-Jun-22 15:58:04

It’s going to get messy.
But a percentage think it’s worth it. We will just have to wait and see how this pans out.

To be fair volver I love chips and I am a southern softie, haven’t tried a Fried Mars Bar though.

If there is another Scottish referendum whatever way it goes some will be happy and some will not.

I personally would hate to see a hard border between England & Scotland which will certainly have to happen if an Independent Scotland joins the EU.

DiamondLily Tue 14-Jun-22 16:01:17

Just give them another vote.

If it succeeds, then Sturgeon will stop banging on.

If it fails, then Sturgeon will have to stop banging on.

Win, win.???

Urmstongran Tue 14-Jun-22 16:04:12

Genuine question volver - are you excited at the prospect, do you think it really will happen?
