Our rights are hard won, we should not be giving them up. www.theguardian.com/law/2022/jun/21/uks-new-bill-of-rights-will-curtail-power-of-european-human-rights-court?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other
This would be bad enough if those in power were trustworthy.

undines, what some people have already done when protest and legal routes seemed to be yielding little is to move to Europe where they feel they have more hope post-Brexit.
My own daughter and family did this and took their business with them.

This is another nail in the coffin I feel.

So sad, my grandfather came here to get away from Hitler and his regime.

it reminds me of somebody called Hitler

Yes, I am really worried about the direction our politicians are taking us in, but I struggle with understanding what action we can take to alter it. Have been signing petitions, etc., but under our current system I can't see how we can effect real change. Any suggestions?

The human rights act only seems to help the wrongdoers in our country how many criminals are using the act to stay in our country

OK! So how many criminals have used the Act to stay in the UK? What's the answer?

Yes. I’d like to know that, too. Maybe the poster could do some research into it for me.

When you say 'criminals' I guess you mean foreigners.

It scares the living daylights out of me I dread to think what sort of country my Granddaughter is growing up in. Most people don't realise what is happening.

varian, thanks for the link.

Personally I think that if it doesn’t scare the hell out of you, then it’s because you don’t understand what is at stake…

Annewilko Thu 23-Jun-22 16:59:59

This has been their plan all along. Demonising the Human Rights Bill, by saying all sorts against it, so many "criminals and or illegal immigrants" using it to get whatever rights they demand. All a crock of course, these are our rights, yours, mine, the people sleeping in the streets. We may never need to use it but I would rather it was there.

But not all. My vote is for the supremacy of UK courts.

Mine isn’t. Such a system lends itself to corruption.

Yes particularly with this government you simply can’t trust it to retain the separation of powers.

Very very worrying.

NZ politics are very different to the UK. yet our laws are based on what our settlers brought with them from England. Even here our Human rights are being eroded in many ways. The 'sheep' are being herded toward the New World Order/Government by some very devious people.
Criminals get away with not paying for their crimes and the victims see no justice being applied at all. NZ is no longer a good place to live and our big cities very bad places to live. I could go on but I,m sure it has all been said before

If we pull out of the European Court of Human Rights, we will be in a group of our own, even below Russia, which has signed but not ratified the document that set it up.

Is that really something to be proud of?

Some of the commentators I've read have said that the effect of the Bill is to just make it more difficult and expensive for individuals to go to court to defend their rights.

Blair's act apparently had the effect of enabling most of the Convention rights cases to be heard and judged in the UK. The new Bill makes it more difficult for litigants to pursue a case in the UK courts, but, as it still recognises the rights established under the European Convention litigants can still take their cases to the ECHR. Which would happen more frequently than now. (I think I've got that right...)

The ? over this is, would the government recognise the rulings of the ECHR or would it be happy to break international law and ignore them.

David Allen Green does an interesting analysis:

You ,the people, must stand up against your lying corrupt government. Get rid of them. Germany in the 1930s comes to mind.

M0nica Fri 24-Jun-22 12:33:07

nanna8 How do you suggest we do it? We are a democracy. We will have an election in due course. Our best hope at the moment is getting rid of Johnson. The fact that there are no 'pappabile' doesn't matter, however long the list of aspirants on the first leadership ballot, it will quickly slim down to two or three people, who can be scrutinised in detail.

Look at this way, with Johnson, we must surely have hit the bottom for corrupt venal leaders, now the only way can be up.
