Live now - resignation speech

TillyTrotter

We anticipated 100,000 Ukrainian children entering our U.K. schools in a report earlier this year.
Our population is almost identical to France’s and they live in a much larger area.
We are not doing too shabbily.

I think that the reality might be rather different, at the moment, anyway.
Admittedly, the data I've found was for early June, so might have increased slightly since then, but the figure given for Ukrainian children in our schools then was fewer than 10,000. There's a long way to go to match the 'anticipated' figure of 100,000.

As France's population is similar to ours (I can't see the relevance of the size of the country) , I think their 18,000 strongly discredits claims that we are doing more for them than other European countries.

Here are some other interesting figures to help put UK support into perspective, these taken from a BBC report, :

" As of 28 June, the (UK) government had issued 142,500 Ukrainian visas "

" The UN says there are more than 867,000 Ukrainians in Germany, almost 382,768 in the Czech Republic and 141,562 in Italy. "

Which shows that his usual bumbling is, like everything about him, just a charade.

Indeed.
Today he wanted to inspire admiration, as if he'd been a success as prime minister, and probably there are many gullible people who fell for it.

TillyTrotter Thu 07-Jul-22 16:24:59

We started with good intentions regarding Ukrainian refugees but we may sadly not achieve those optimistic figures of children.

UK’s red tape means it takes longer to complete repatriation.

It’s not a competition - all countries should just do their best to offer safety to these homeless people.

I think its the constant We are world leaders in this that and the other, which gets on peoples nerves, because its just not true.

Yammy Thu 07-Jul-22 16:31:43

Appalling and delusional speech not one word of contrition from a man who we were all warned about as being a liar. We will go down in history as the country whose MP had to resign for appointing a Bum Nipper amongst many other things.sad

Hot news!

M0nica Thu 07-Jul-22 16:37:38

It was a shocker, blaming other people, disparaging fellow MPs. No admission or apology for his personal failings. Because at the end of the day it was his personal failings that did for him and threatened to bring his party down with him.

Going on about all the people who voted for him in 2019. That was three years ago and most of that support had ebbed away. Even a cursory glance at the opinon polls could tell him that. The biggest fall was in approvals for him. Someone quoted -50%!

Tilly there is a reason for our red tape....it delays things. A lot, for months. Puts all but the most desperate off.
There is a reason why people have to get to this country before they are able to claim asylum. To make it difficult. Wouldn't it be sensible if those wanting to come here could apply at any british embassy in Europe. Or set up something near the French coast if the French would agree.
Would instantly save all those nasty people smugglers making all that profit. Simples.
Sometimes our best is just not good enough. Our few numbers tell the sorry story.

westendgirl Thu 07-Jul-22 17:28:41

I am sure that I read that the stumbling block to setting up a visa centre in Calais was not the French, who were in favour, but Johnson's government .

Piping in as an outsider...

Good to see Johnson finally outed. I thought he would be like Trump and dig in his heels, but I think finally the party members felt it wasn't looking good on them to let him carry on.

I'm haven't read enough to know about other potential leaders, but indeed it is hard to find a politician without some background dark cloud.

I understand there are two years left until your next general election, so I do hope they find a decent replacement. Not a nice mess to clean up now, plus recession, covid and health care a mess.

TillyTrotter Thu 07-Jul-22 17:49:49

Let’s hope we see an improvement in the assistance we can give these poor people in the second half of this year.

vegansrock Thu 07-Jul-22 17:51:11

He didn’t mention “ resignation” once. Didn’t apologise for anything, just blaming others and trying to big up himself.

Iam64 Thu 07-Jul-22 18:04:29

He showed no remorse, no apologies, no responsibility, graceless, self serving narcissistic speech. As many of his supporters have said - that’s Boris, we know what to expect.

Johnson has to go. How can he lead the country given the disdain in which he’s held by the majority of Tory MPs. If they’d any integrity, they’d refuse to take ministerial posts.
Senior tories have to find a way of getting him out. And within days. When will the next Johnson scandal break. It’s been one a week recently

M0nica Thu 07-Jul-22 18:09:20

I fear for Ukraine now he’s gone because the rest of Europe couldn’t care less.

What is the evidence for this statement? Just because something isn't on the front page does not mean that many countries in Europe, including us, and the US are still pouring money and arms into Ukraine. Countries surrounding Russia, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, lithuania, Norway, Poland. All are very involved with Ukraine because a Russian threat to Ukraine is also a threat against them.

The UK will be intensively involved with Ukraine, no matter which party is in power and who is Prime Minister.

Thanks CanadianGran. I was wondering how people from other countries were viewing this. The parallels with Trump are truly terrifying and, like the last days of Trump, Johnson hasn’t actually gone yet. And I fear that both of them are going to linger around like a bad smell.

This was the funniest thing of the day - well done Hugh Grant!

grumppa Thu 07-Jul-22 18:59:11

In the unwished-for event of a prime minister dying suddenly while in office, the ruling party would presumably act swiftly to appoint a stand-in while going through the process of choosing a new leader.

Nobody would wish the demise of the present incumbent, but he is to all intents and purposes dead in the water. Should not the same procedure be applied?

MaizieD Thu 07-Jul-22 19:08:06

How can he possibly continue, even as a 'caretaker' PM if he is resigning because he lost the confidence of his parliamentary party? They're not going to be any more confident now... are they? hmm

MayBee70 Thu 07-Jul-22 19:10:06

The more times I hear the speech the angrier I get.

Brilliant!

Benny Hill theme, and Bye Bye Baby Goodbye! grin

We have a deputy PM who shoukd be doing this. Suspect this was the price to get him to resign though he may well dig his heels in a la Trump when the time cones. Hecshoukd have gone yeaterday, no apology no remorse or regret. He is neither honourable nor honest.
