I don't think you are, NanKate. It's clear that there are many posters who agree with you and the "be careful what you wish for" scenario has proven to be true. As much as I miss Boris I do now think the best option is for a General Election so that we can vote in a Labour government for a few years to see how they will further mess up the country while the Conservatives reform and reunite in Opposition.

What 'important stuff' did Johnson get right?? He said he'd 'get Brexit done' but he never did, even though he's being credited with just that. Northern Ireland is NOT sorted, and there are no trade deals to speak of, so we haven't even seen the tip of the iceberg of the long-term implications (which will, of course, in any case, be fudged by Covid) Johnson did nothing for the poor and underpaid, and there are many who can put forward a good case for him having mismanaged the Covid crisis. He lied, cheated, manipulated, was an utterly selfish, narcissistic disgrace, and he has lowered standards and expectations in politics that will be with us for years to come. There have been times in the past when I voted Tory, so I am no dyed-in-the-wool Labour supporter, but I feel that to vote Tory now would be nothing short of immoral. When are people going to wake up? We are sleepwalking into disaster - and indeed death, for some, this winter. Liz Truss is no joke, she's scary!

I should be a Conservative voter but Johnson's deceits and obsfucations were too much for me.

I don't feel that Liz Truss has the intellectual capability required ('let's cut taxes!') and someone earlier on this thread said it - the country feels rudderless.

In my opinion Rishi Sunak was a far better candidate as at least he has an understanding of commerce and industry. Still, all done now. Let's see how Ms Truss fares and hope that she won't be walked over and will be able to hold her own.

When I joined gransnet I remember more right wing/Conservative posters than there seem to be currently. There were some interesting discussions on news and politics. Hopefully now the charlatan has gone, more conservative supporters will appear again.

Yes, it’s much less balanced and there can sometimes be a lot of unpleasantness towards posters with differing political views, which is a shame.

I voted for Liz Truss because Rishi would always be berated by MSM for being rich so he could never understand the lives of ordinary people. His wife is very rich and did not regularise her tax position until it was public. One of you said Truss was elected by a minority of old people who read the Daily Mail. So we are relatively old here …So maybe I could opine most of you read the Guardian, it may be so. I subscribe online to the Telegraph and The Times but would never bother with the Daily Mail. I think that the Conservatives have been in government for too long and maybe it is time for Labour to have another go. The problem is that Keir Starmer, a likeable man , has no charisma at all and seems unable to inspire people. When we look at todays politicians they seem to be rather lame and do not inspire confidence. You may not like the Tories, but I just wish the Labour Party had a different leader. Maybe a woman? Truss is the third female PM. Nobody mentions that Labour has not had one yet. BOB I read your posts with interest and wish we could have a drink and enjoy a good argument.

I sorry but I am fed up with the whole sorry mess, Boris not a favourite with me or indeed a lot of others, but do we truly believe that anyone would be any better, or at least please most of the country? I just feel that our confidence and trust is at an all time low.

I miss Boris too. He was a breath of fresh air compared to most of them in parliament.

We all know that if there was a General Election tomorrow and by some unfortunate chance Keir Starmer was our new Prime Minister, there would be just as many complaints about him and his government/choice of ministers. It does seem that we have a pretty poor selection of candidates to run this country at the moment! I have thought, and for some time, that this country seems incapable of governing itself in a way fit for the twenty first century, with a fair distribution of wealth and opportunity and a respected place in the world.
The election of Ms Truss, who has just been declared leader of the Conservative Party, and therefore our new Prime Minister, does little to dispel that opinion.

perhaps it is that they do not want to continually read disparaging remarks about the way they vote? social media does bring out the worst in some people and they will attack simply the voters and not just the political party.

We have had 12 years of tory misrule not because there are more tory voters but because we have more centrist or left of centre parties than we do right wing parties. Which splits the vote. None of the last tory governments have been elected on the majority of votes.

If we ever get PR the whole parliamentary landscape will be different and far more representative of the views of the voters.

I do not think we will have PR at any time soon.

it was different I know, as it involved Brexit and also the negative impact of Mr Corbyn on labour voters.
however it has to be said that they have won many elections now so there must be many supporting voters.
I have noticed that it is always 'misrule' used by people when the vote is not what they agree with after an election.

... much as I am not a Johnson fan, I thought that comment from Gabrielle was unnecessarily rude and, as is usual with such observations, gave no context. So it was just a personal jibe.

We need to hear opposing views. Without them, there's no debate.

I was very sad to see Boris removed. The new PM seems pretty useless to me. He was far better than both of them put together for all his faults.

You are confusing number of votes with number of seats, Prentice.

The tories got an 80 seat majority with just 43% of the votes cast. That is not a majority of votes. There were more people in the UK who didn't want the tories in power than there were those who do. If the polls are right there are even fewer people who want the tories in power now.

The U.K. is not a Tory constituency. It votes centre left mostly.
