I'd support a parallel campaign for washable reusable period protection.
I am not a messy person but...
Happy Birthday - 100 years on Earth
As my heading says. Personally, I think that common-sense should have been applied in the first place, and a woman appointed to the position.

^Well I suppose there will be the same kind of outcry when the next male gynaecologist/obstetrician is appointed? After all that is a role when women are intimately involved. (Waits for the reply-but he will be properly qualified etc.)^
Yes, that's exactly what I think, Glorianny.
He's not medically qualified and his job was not just to ensure that the law was complied with, it was to interact and discuss with young people too.
Women and young girls wishing to discuss gynaecological problems may feel much more confident doing so if the person they confide in is medically qualified or at least is another female with personal knowledge of the problems of menstruation.
But period poverty and appropriate supplies is not about gynaecological or medical problems. It's a social issue. It is a direct result of poverty and no one whatever their sex should be ashamed to talk about poverty.. Yet what does this shit storm of abuse on one man, trying to do a valuable job, do but perpetuate the out dated myths that women should be separate.
I see once again part of my post has been used to try to detract from what I was saying which is that if women insist only women can cater to their needs, they really haven't a leg to stand on when some man tells them they are different, and they can't do the same things men can.
If things are going to be separated by sex you can bet that it won't be men who will come off worse.
The provision of sanitary supplies might well mean the conversation would lead to a discussion of menstruation.
One poster mentioned above the provision of inadequate protection so the discussion there would involve problems with periods.

In which case as the post isn't a medical one surely the best advice would be to consult a medical professional. Are you suggesting the requirements of the post advertised were inadequate or do you want a completely different post? I doubt if most women could advise on fibroids or polycystic ovarian syndrome for example. Personal experience does not indicate suitability for any job otherwise, as everyone has been to school, we could all be teachers.

^Well I'll leave you all to congratulate yourselves that the outdated attitudes shown in this thread have cost someone their job, and made an innovative policy harder to implement^. All because of ignorance and prejudice.
That is a ridiculous post
I'm sure the previous Gransnet thread about this influenced the decision. ?
Why do you always write such aggressive posts on so many threads to those who may have a different opinion to you, volver?
You may not always be correct in your views even if you think you are but it's possible to state your views without attacking others, surely? Other posters manage it.
Just curious really.
It's the truth.
How do you invisage a feminist?
Do you think we should meekly go around tugging sleeves whispering "excuse me, if you could just possibly listen to me for a moment please, thank you...hello?"
Or are we allowed a backbone and an opinion?
There is no abuse in the post you quoted, just truth.
You don't get to call the truth mean because you don't like hearing it.
To me this all smacks of a box ticking exercise - ticking the box marked diversity or equality, which we all know has to be adhered to these days.
For instance last week I read that the RAF is so in thrall to this politically correct nonsense that it positively discriminates against white male recruits regardless of their ability.
Or are we allowed a backbone and an opinion?
Of course.
But I'm sure, especially in the job you do, you can recognise the difference between assertion and aggression.
I'm still puzzling over the fact that Gransnet could have cost someone their job - who knew we had such power?

Well no, it’s not truth. It’s an opinion.
It could have said
Well I’ll leave you all to congratulate yourselves on the clear-sighted attitudes that have ensured that an inappropriate candidate has been removed from the post and an ill-considered initiative has been brought to an end.
All because of thoughtful and rational arguments voiced by concerned people.
The facts that are the truth are still there. What’s changed is the opinion and the emotive language.
Concerned.....
Too many "concerns" were completely unfounded and proven wrong by simply reading past the headlines
How do you know this, VS? What has been 'proven wrong'?
I don't think it is rational or reasonable to think you can judge a person's ability to do any job simply by looking at their sex. It isn't that long ago that women were considered unsuitable for so many things for that reason. Why would we now choose to do the same to men?
When my mother was in hospital the best and most caring nurse was a man, she also said he was the gentlest when he helped her shower or dress. The most aggressive and difficult nurse was a woman, who demanded the first time I saw her "Does your mother have accidents?" As mum had just been diagnosed with a fractured pelvis after falling I didn't know what to answer. What was in fact wrong was that my mother, dosed up with painkillers and immobile, hadn't called for a bedpan early enough, so this nurse had decided she was incontinent and we were hiding it. Sex is no guarantee of care or of suitability for a job.

What a wonderful post. Here’s something we agree on and who will be making sure that happens? Why men of course!
And if they can’t arrange that by being men, they’re sure to try being . . . to make sure females do come off worse.
as everyone has been to school, we could all be teachers. ???
What makes that so funny is that some parents think that’s true, for exactly that reason, -or they did until Covid happened.
Yes period dignaty is a problem and needs solving. But there thousands of other problems that need solving. Do we really need a minister for every one.

There’s a lot of opinions on the thread.
The only proven fact is that the a decision has been taken not to continue with the original initiative.
Opinion, however strongly held, is only that.
Although there does seem to be confusion between the two in some minds?

A minister?
I don't know what to say...
Quote from that article:
A spokesperson for the working group said: "It is regrettable that given the threats and abuse levelled at individuals in recent weeks, the period dignity regional lead officer role will not continue
Support will continue to be provided to the colleagues and students who have been subjected to personal attack. Their safety and wellbeing are of paramount importance."
Whether or not one thinks it is ok for a man to do that job, the above is really concerning. Policy/identified job needs should NOT be decided by intimidation and personal attack

I have read it.
I'm just not sure what any of us know beyond what is in the papers, or what has been proven - it seems to me that there are only differing opinions to work with. However, those who feel that regardless of the sex of the post holder, he was (on the face of it at least) not good at PR, crisis management, media management, reputation management, communicating with diverse audiences or navigating the tricky waters of gender politics are accused of being 'a mob', told that we 'don't understand the issues and positioned as somehow unfeminist, and I am questioning that.
I agree that hounding him from office (if that is what happened) would be wrong, but in the same way that feminists on here are routinely told that we shouldn't judge non-violent trans supporters by the actions of TRAs, those who voice opposition to a man presiding over period dignity should not be judged by the actions of hounders, if they exist.

Sorry, I didn't think I needed to explain that. ?
People bringing my profession into this does make me laugh
I work in KS1?
Adults choose their own behaviour
Really not my place to police an adults tone for the sake of those who choose to put their own inflection on it rightly or wrongly
I read the words in a neutral tone, I don't have the ability to do that

Thanks for quoting me Molly Go, perhaps you would like to explain to me how insisting women have certain roles isn't actually buying into the idea of separate provisions for both sexes and actually ensuring that men are able to once again decide where women go and what they do? Because there are countries who currently have such restrictions, and people in this country who would like to see such restrictions. How that helps women I don't know.
Of course the teacher bit was funny. But it's just as true because someone has periods they wouldn't be suitable as a Period Dignity Officer.
