Is this appropriate?

I think it makes him look political. I can see some of goodwill people seem to have for him leaching away as a consequence.

But I dislike both the monarchy and Truss, so recognise I’m a tad biased.

I don't pay for my news in a rag like telegraph. As for disliking someone you don't even know? Strangely adolescent

So sorry .I meant my response to be about Truss and not to posters on here.

?? made me laugh! Fleeting image of you tugging your forelock and sweating a bit!
I agree WTF?! Surely should just be the King And I (Camilla?)

The Queen when she ascended to the throne did the same thing by visiting Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales as well as Parliament.
This is not unusual and its the perfect time for Liz Truss to go to having just become the Prime Minister.

The difference being, that Churchill recognised the need to keep parliament and monarchy separate.

Truss can very well troop around the U.K. if that is what floats her boat, but not with the monarch. (Personally, I would rather she did the job she is paid to do - it would make a nice change after the past few months)

Truss has lifted the ban on fracking whilst everyone’s attention is elsewhere. What else is being sneaked through parliament I wonder?

Ms Truss's face giving away what she really feels about Sturgeon, in St Giles yesterday.

To be fair, Ms Truss just looks as serious as everyone else in the photo who was listening to Ms Sturgeon.
She could hardly be seen to be beaming at such a solemn occasion.

I thought parliament was in recess during the period of mourning

Liz Truss is not a queen.

Since when did our PMs tour the UK on becoming PM?

Truss is continuing her predecessor's example of sidelining Parliament at every opportunity.

I suspect that it was done by Statutory Instrument, which can make amendments to legislation without the approval of Parliament.

Truss tried to muscle in on today's proceedings in Edinburgh,

Doesn't she just love a photo opportunity?

She was an also-ran and for once upstaged by Nicola Surgeon who as First Minister of Scotland had every right to take a prominent role in the service at St Giles Cathedral.

The attention seeking Truss will get her opportunity in London.

I think I am right in saying there are more ERG members of her cabinet than even Johnson had. Where have all the Conservatives gone? They have had their party stolen from under them. The ERG doesn't care about the country, as we have seen previously. They want to get their type of policy through. She is now hiding in full sight, turning this into a longer "honeymoon" period where it is hard for people to judge her.

The ERG does not want a government; they want a dictatorship. Her bill on energy, was not properly introduced. There was no preview paper for the other parties before the announcement. There was no properly run questioning of it, just an announcement that this is what Parliament is going to do. Most importantly, there was no vote. If that is not on the way to dictatorship, I don't know what is. The arrogance of the Bill, the attack on the Civil Service and a cabinet full of nodding dogs do not bode well for the country.

It's not appropriate. Charles as a constitutional monarch should stay out of any political stunt. And not everyone believes in monarchy though I think it's better than having a President for Life as could have happened with Thatcher if we had been a republic. Nonetheless, the right to protest is a human right and the arrests of the few people who have protested at the ceremonies are quite wrong: of course, they were at risk of being attacked by the crowd in which case they should have been given police protection.

volver Tue 13-Sept-22 11:02:20

Who has advocated a President for Life?

Making things up, are we?

(BTW, Thatcher was Prime Minister. Getting a bit confused there.)

Grantanow Tue 13-Sept-22 13:32:43

Not confused at all, volver! If we had been a republic Thatcher's popularity with a large section of the population might well have meant her election as President. And if she kept on standing it might have been for life. As we don't have a written constitution in the UK it's unclear as to whether a President would have a limited term. Kings and Queens have a lifetime job unless abdicating.

volver Tue 13-Sept-22 13:42:02

To take these individually:

1. You are assuming that Thatcher would have wanted to be President without any discussion of what the role of President might be.

2. You say she might well have been elected President. She might well not.

3. You are assuming that there would be no limit on the number of terms a President could serve, when we haven't even decided if we want a President.

4. We do have a written constitution, I believe, its just not all written down in the same place. Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.

5. You are willing to accept a lifetime king/queen but not to accept an elected HoS with limited periods of office which we could decide on.

Nothing's clear about this. But sticking with the hereditary monarchy because of some made up concerns abut democracy is a bit odd, IMO.

Ok, Truss is not going on the tour. But - and having read this far - I would just like to say, that if I was the King....and was at all dubious about her ...I would definitely want to know just how she ticks!

I don't know who's idea this was. I suspect it wasn't Truss's. If it was Charles's idea I suppose no one is wanting to say no to him right now. Equally if it was a political suggestion he could have vetoed it as no one would want to disagree at present. He's looking old and distressed. It's a massive overwhelming time for him. I'm sure he's being listened to.

The article, which is all this thread is based on, says it was Truss's decision.

If it was in a newspaper it must be true then?

I do not think it will float her boat at all, as she has many important things regarding government to do, however, I have read that it was decided some time ago that whoever was PM of any political party, would do this.It is hardly a tour as such, but meant to reassure the people that the PM and the new King are both at the helm in fluctuating times.
it could have been Mr Corbyn, or Mr Johnson or whoever was the PM.

Truss does herself no favours blatantly seeking out photo opportunities. She will get plenty of these in London during the next week.
