Was he taking a private phone call? That’s the least disreputable take I have on him, appearing to talk, laugh, wipe his face with his hand and appear to sway.

Bluecat

Perhaps he was chuckling to himself at the thought of the awful Budget he was going to spring on us.

you meant the fortune he and others would make out of Trading against Sterling, with full knowledge? More like.

I knew there would be people picking spots off, all those they do not like, for whatever reason. You would surely be better advised to pick out the good parts, and let the not so good parts go by.

He was obviously high. There is a culture of cocaine use in the House of Commons. The place was tested on one occasion and large residues of cocaine were found on the surfaces in the toilets (greater residues than are found in large city clubs). Several of them have been witnessed stoned, Michael Gove being the most well known for it! Although Gove only admits to using cocaine before going into politics, he has been seen very obviously wasted (including once in PMQs) several times over recent years (see also George Osborne).

Funerals do funny things to people. I remember being at the funeral of a much-loved uncle some years ago where the vicar was preaching on Luke 13:34.
I was utterly grief stricken but, at one point, the vicar looked straight at me and said, with great earnestness, "so, you see, God is a chicken!" and I just burst out laughing! I didn't mean to, I wasn't feeling at all jolly I assure you, but I had to quickly bury my face in my handkerchief and pretend to be sobbing with grief not laughter.
Emotions are funny things.

Livey Sat 24-Sept-22 11:58:12

Perhaps he had toasted our lovely Queen, just a little too often, prior to the funeral ?

My favourite shot (being caught with you knickers round your ankles) was of a couple of Cardinals both looking at their phones while waiting for the service to start. Someone must have alerted them because they looked into camera and hands/phones went down.

Guess it might have been God calling them.

Your prerogative of course. But I am surprised, as this guy is in the process of a multi-billion gamble, you and I will have to pay for, so surely his competency is of huge interest!

Vintagenonna Sat 24-Sept-22 12:18:05

I think he suffers from the same difficulties as Meghan Markle.

A target for privileged white media bods.

I saw an interview with Rachel Johnson. Journalist and sister to you-know-who on the subject of making inappropriate referrals in a right wing rag to Harry's then wife-to-be as "exotic".

"Well, sorry - Harry!" Giggle, giggle.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 24-Sept-22 12:22:13

Last time I was in Westminster Abbey it was impossible to get a phone signal.

Odd comment ….

I like to be 'charitable' and give people the benefit of the doubt - especially if I don't like them (and I really don't like QK) so as to be as objective as possible.

Do you think he might have been suffering from claustrophobia? I ask because I've been in a similar situation - trapped in a confined space, unable to move around at will. It had a bad effect on me. I was sweating and I know I behaved in a slightly odd way to compensate for the overwhelming panic that I felt.

It's just a thought.

Someone may have already said this as I have not read every entry but it is very likely he is neurodiveregent. People in the found row were he was sitting were having a conversation at the time but that has not been blasted all over social media, They of course were elderly white people and not part of the new cabinet who I do not like but I think this has been an unfair criticism.

JaneJudge Sat 24-Sept-22 12:29:56

Oh I'd have definitely felt claustrophobic in those pews!

undines Sat 24-Sept-22 12:49:46

Why is anyone surprised? We have a rabble government, arising from the fact that Johnson sacked anyone who might in any way be a threat, then Truss rewarded only those who supported her (among which we maybe able to number sugar manufacturers - but I haven't checked that so don't leap on me)
I don't care where the clip came from. Anyone in public life who can't control their behaviour at such an event, when they KNOW visual material can be taken at any time, and go viral - well, doesn't say much.

I haven't read all the comments either. Yes, he could be neurodivergent.

His behaviour did seem 'at odds' with the occasion but accusations of drug-taking, etc fuel rumour and speculation and, as much as I dislike this man's ideology and his general demeanour, I think it's wrong and unfair to condemn him without understanding why he behaved the way he did.

Yes, so would I! My bout of odd behaviour happened during the stalling of what was then (1970s) called the "drain train" - from Waterloo Station to Bank Underground. The train suddenly and silently came to a halt in the tunnel; everyone around me either studied their nails, the morning paper, or just stared into space, whilst I sweated, fidgeted and smiled manically at anyone who caught my eye and who I thought might give me a friendly pat on the shoulder and tell me it's-all-OK-we'll-be-moving-again-in-a-minute... grin

So nobody ever wipes their face and sways? I did once when I felt unwell. As none of you were there I don't think any of you have the right to judge. A newspaper picture could have easily been altered.

It was a video. Not a photo.

Fleurpepper Sat 24-Sept-22 13:24:46

A whole video over quite a period of time? Not so easily. And if it was the case, surely the Goverment would have made official statement and complaint. Did you watch it. He did not just wipe his face and swayed a bit, he was laughing his head off!

I did give him the benefit of the doubt and thought he might be wiping away a tear.

4allweknow Sat 24-Sept-22 13:30:16

Perhaps he suffers from ADHD!

Grandmabatty Sat 24-Sept-22 14:09:13

He's clearly laughing. Again I repeat, Suella Braverman glances at him and looks uncomfortable. Of course the government won't comment on it. They rarely did when others behaved poorly in public. Some people on here seem to want to downplay his behaviour.

Nanannotgrandma Sat 24-Sept-22 16:36:51

Could have had an earpiece for phone in ?

I too think that nobody should judge the man without knowing the real reason. It is all supposition after all.
Feeling unwell, very tired, panicked and claustrophobic are all reasons, it is unfair to say ‘he was high’ as we do not know that.

I feel sick at the way he is borrowing while slinging more money towards the wealthy and expecting people on UC to actively seek extra hours or have their benefit cut. Now UC is supposed to be calculated by ”What the law says you need to live on” How on earth have we got back to Victorian values where the poor working all the hours god sends, deserved to be poor because they were lazy?
