How on earth can Truss face her supporters - because that is what her audience will largely of - those who voted for her.

Rishi Sunak, Sajid Javid, David Davis and Mel Stride are not attending Conference - that must be a first for senior MPs.

I think they're cowards not to attend - they should go and say why they are not supporting Truss & Kwarteng instead of ducking out.

What a shower!

It is said that a lot of backbenchers are going to stay away.

We shall see. I would have thought that unlikely, but honestly who knows.

Casdon Wed 28-Sept-22 18:05:30

Actually I don’t blame them, it will send the most powerful message if the conference is boycotted by large numbers of MPs.

Fleurpepper Wed 28-Sept-22 18:53:41

will any GNetter be there I wonder?

MawtheMerrier Wed 28-Sept-22 18:54:23

Do you fancy meeting up for a coffee? ??

Fleurpepper Wed 28-Sept-22 19:02:00

anytime, as long as it is not there ;)

MawtheMerrier Wed 28-Sept-22 19:25:58

Ms Truss will need to come out of the woodwork first!

Iam64 Wed 28-Sept-22 20:03:27

I wonder if public protests will take place outside the conference. The last protest I took part in was against the invasion of Iraq. I can’t go to Birmingham but if the conference was nearer to me, I’d join an organised protest. Dreadful government - just when we thought it couldn’t get worse

Apparently Truss advisors are content for MPs not to turn up, as the optics will not look good when the media ask them for comment etc at the conference.

"In spite of the hammering being taken at local government level, all 11 Surrey constituencies are currently Conservative at a parliamentary level, and have broadly been so since 1885. But this could change quickly. Whilst knocking on doors over the last 6 months, we have heard time and time again from residents that they will no longer be voting Conservative even though they have previously been a “lifer”. If we are losing natural Conservative voters in Surrey, something is very awry."

Kwarteng’s speech this afternoon

4pm?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 04-Oct-22 10:14:47

Is it Truss’s speech today?

Casdon Tue 04-Oct-22 10:16:21

No, it’s tomorrow

Whitewavemark2 Tue 04-Oct-22 10:30:10

Thanks

Calendargirl Tue 04-Oct-22 10:32:46

A local backbencher is not attending. He has been an MP for ages, said he always used to go, but backbenchers are virtually ignored nowadays, it’s all about the higher ups getting their profile across, a big PR event.

Sounded very jaded, as most of us are when we’ve been in a job for a long time, all youthful hopes and aspirations long since evaporated, and looking forward to retirement.

Has anyone else seen that a conference fringe meeting about the EU, with David Gauke and Michael Heseltine, was packed out, people queuing to get in, while Truss's favoured economist, Minford, explaining her economic strategy, had very much less than stellar attendance hmm

Grantanow Tue 04-Oct-22 13:04:12

The Tory conference is usually a well marshalled publicfest but this year the cracks are very evident. Good luck to real Tories like Heseltine and Gauk. How many Prime Ministers to Christmas?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 05-Oct-22 09:08:04

Truss’s speech.

11am?

One bright spot.

They are playing the Benny Hill theme tune and the Muppet theme tune outside and the police won't stop it. They can hear it in the hall. ?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 05-Oct-22 09:14:26

You can see their irritation as they leave the hall?

Grannynannywanny Wed 05-Oct-22 09:18:10

I heard earlier on the news Liz Truss is going to walk on stage to a 90’s classic song. Any suggestions?

I’ll say “Fantasy” by Maria Carey.
