Our local police have had to close this bridge this morning due to protesters climbing up high, endangering themselves and others along with prevent thousands of folks getting to work.

We all know the planet has problems, but disruptive behaviour alienating those who they wish to bring in board to their cause is not the way to go.

?

Mollygo Mon 17-Oct-22 10:16:35

Waits for cries of . . . What sort of protest would be acceptable?
I don’t know.
Certainly Blue Planet II made the damage global warming is having quite clear.
I wonder how many of the younger generations, who are the ones who must make the biggest changes to their lifestyles watched that, and thought it applied to them.
I did elsewhere suggest protesters making use of the media, e.g. TikTok videos to broadcast facts and figures, but on second thoughts, that would involve using devices which use lithium, which is itself under scrutiny for potential damage.
So I don’t know.

I have suggested on another thread they should be targeting youngsters who are buying the latest mobile phones, buying fast fashion, buying water in plastic bottles, buying everything that's disposable. The consumer society has a lot to answer for.

Mollygo Mon 17-Oct-22 10:29:57

I saw your post, Chestnut.
I’m not sure those young people see themselves as part of the problem though.

I agree with you both Mollygo and Chestnut

rosie1959 Mon 17-Oct-22 10:40:39

What are they achieving apart from a big traffic block and very cross motorists
They would achieve even less if they didn't close the bridge and just left them up there hopefully they have secured themselves probably not pc but probably more popular than their actions

Chestnut Mon 17-Oct-22 10:49:51

We pander to H&S in this country and never do anything to upset or endanger them. I guess leaving them up there would be ideal, but if they fell and hurt someone then we'd never hear the end of it.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 17-Oct-22 10:58:01

They are 85 meters high not the safest of protests, I hope they have secured themselves as I wouldn’t like them to fall to their deaths, despite my opinion on this protest.

The tail back was over 7 miles last time I looked.

All those cars/vans/lorries stationary and pumping out CO2, seems rather counterproductive?

Chestnut Mon 17-Oct-22 11:08:39

I have little sympathy for anyone who deliberately puts themselves in danger climbing bridges and high buildings. It's their choice and they don't have to do it! What is worrying is the possibility of them hurting someone else.

And yet again preventing people from getting to work, to hospital, and to important meetings. It achieves nothing apart from raised blood pressure in the people queuing for hours in order to get on with their day. And possibly a death or two because patients aren’t able to get to hospital in time, or because surgeries were postponed due to the surgeons being unable to get to work on time.

We are currently sitting in the traffic jam caused by these idiots. 4 of us are on our way to a funeral, 3 people have taken the day off work, 2 travelled down from Scotland last night. We will now miss the service. I have every sympathy with members of the public who dragged protesters off the road in Shoreditch on Saturday. It is a matter of time before someone is killed.
Whilst I agree with their argument I don’t agree with their tactics and therefore have no sympathy for them. The media needs to stop reporting their selfish actions.

Katie59 Mon 17-Oct-22 12:10:56

No sympathy with them, they are part of the consumer society, just like the rest of us. It’s their way of getting noticed instead of being useful contributing members of society.

When we reduce our consumption of resources I will join in the crusade.

Here we go again...shall we ask GNHQ for an "Indignation and Misinformed Complaining" forum?

Chestnut Mon 17-Oct-22 12:32:08

The expert is about to educate us with her profound knowledge and experience of everything we know nothing about.

Not regarding this, no misinformation my OP was from information direct from the Police website.

It is relatively local, the effect could be seen from my kitchen window as roads leading to the bridge became slower and slower during the rush (slow) hour and was exasperated by the school runs.

Maudi Mon 17-Oct-22 12:36:48

Perhaps we should ask GNHQ for a "I Know It All" forum

If I must. It's a chore, but somebody has to do it.

Maudi Mon 17-Oct-22 12:40:05

Most people have had enough of these so called protesters.

volver Mon 17-Oct-22 12:40:43

I'm sick fed up with posters who think "oh they wear shoes and drink water" is a coherent argument.

maddyone Mon 17-Oct-22 12:41:46

I’m so sorry nandad that’s a horrible thing to have happened. I’m not surprised you have no sympathy for them.

MerylStreep Mon 17-Oct-22 12:44:00

Chestnut &Maudi ?????
Better still, don’t feed the expert

MerylStreep Mon 17-Oct-22 12:46:06

What a shame it’s quite warm today with little wind blowing ?

GrannyGravy13 Mon 17-Oct-22 12:46:43

Our drivers had to divert via the Blackwell Tunnel, more diesel emissions, extra costs to us through diesel and man hours.

Absolutely no sympathy whatsoever, just a shame that it has stopped raining.

From the Telegraph just now:

“Police have closed a major road bridge linking Essex and Kent after a report that two people have "climbed onto the bridge and are currently at height".

These were a 33-year-old teacher and a 39-year-old bridge engineer from Just Stop Oil, who vowed to stay up there and keep the bridge closed for 24 hours.”

Seems tonight’s ‘rush’ hour will be a ‘crawl’ hour or three.
