Our local police have had to close this bridge this morning due to protesters climbing up high, endangering themselves and others along with prevent thousands of folks getting to work.

We all know the planet has problems, but disruptive behaviour alienating those who they wish to bring in board to their cause is not the way to go.

LadyGracie Mon 17-Oct-22 12:49:26

They are just a nuisance and definitely not peaceful.

Urmstongran Mon 17-Oct-22 12:53:09

Gortex jacket, nylon ropes etc. They couldn’t protest without oil... the sad truth.

From the Telegraph just now:

“Police have closed a major road bridge linking Essex and Kent after a report that two people have "climbed onto the bridge and are currently at height".

These were a 33-year-old teacher and a 39-year-old bridge engineer from Just Stop Oil, who vowed to stay up there and keep the bridge closed for 24 hours.”

Seems tonight’s ‘rush’ hour will be a ‘crawl’ hour or three.

It is awful at the best of times, I should imagine locals will leave their journey until much later.

Maybe extra custom for Lakeside (Essex side) and Bluewater (Kent side) whilst waiting for the queues to lessen these shopping centres definitely need a boost,

They are using the South to North tunnel to accommodate all traffic so queues are both sides of the river now.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 17-Oct-22 12:54:30

For those who are unaware the bridge takes traffic North to South and the tunnel which is by its side takes traffic South to North.

Absolutely, oh the irony.

How did they get access in the first place is there no security around the bridge.

volver Mon 17-Oct-22 13:00:07

QED.

Sorry and all that, but this is pathetic. It's not an argument. The reason they are protesting is that we rely so much on oil for everything we use every day. Saying that they couldn't do what they do without oil is the whole point

I'm fed up of them and their protests too. They are using the wrong means and targeting the wrong people. Clearly. Look at Indignant of Essex here.

It is part of the M25, loads of CCTV.

Obviously picked the time they thought they could make a rapid assent, 3.50am

Come on volver Indignant of Essex as I am the only poster (that I am aware of) on this thread from Essex, you really are wasting your time insulting me.

I am more concerned about my staff and customers, I really do not care a flying fig for your pseudo insults and digs.

MerylStreep Mon 17-Oct-22 13:08:21

Someone wasn’t watching all those cctv cameras, were they ?
The dartford crossing was the reason I bought my wee bottle.
I’ve used it twice in the back of the car.

OK, indignant of Kent then. Or indignant of England. Whatever.

I didn't mean it to be an insult to you specifically. I'm sorry.

Personally, I'm more concerned with what they are protesting about rather than trying to make "clever" hmm comments about how they couldn't do what they do without oil.

Rosie51 Mon 17-Oct-22 13:11:02

nandad I'm sorry you have this extra stress to deal with. They are totally heartless towards those people they hurt. In central London they wouldn't even move to allow emergency vehicles through. Other people are just 'collateral damage'.
Those that have never missed a hospital appointment or the funeral of a loved one because of these protests can afford to not be 'indignant of anywhere'.
The knock effect of the Dartford crossing protest is that the approach roads to the Blackwall tunnel and surrounding area are choking from even more vehicles trying for alternative ways to cross the river.

Grantanow Mon 17-Oct-22 13:34:39

It was unnecessary to close the bridge. The protesters could simply stay up there until they chose to come down. Of course the you might fall off but that would their responsibility.

The expert is about to educate us with her profound knowledge and experience of everything we know nothing about.

Chestnut, If you mean Vd, you could be right.

I haven’t seen a post yet where they are unable to put everyone right according to them.
Regard it as a never ending form of entertainment. Like a strictly back story.

Vd?

How unfortunate. I'll get that checked out straight away.

Given that they can't forcibly get them down from such a height, and it's reported they intend to shut the bridge for 24 hours, perhaps it just should stay open? The protestors are in no danger from vehicles below them crossing the bridge.

Zoejory Mon 17-Oct-22 13:48:39

I think they do have to close the bridge. Not so much for their safety but the traffic below.

People will be peering up, rubber necking and possibly end up causing an accident.

Volver I do expect you may well be indignant from Dundee or somewhere else in Scotland, if a major bridge was closed near you and you had an urgent appointment, or medical emergency.
The truth is that these environmental groups are not only causing chaos on the roads and in city centres but also preventing heart attack and stroke victims, amongst others from receiving urgent treatment in hospitals, along with stopping others from getting to weddings, funerals and many other important appointments.Their treatment up to now has been far too lenient.
I would have left them on the bridge for several hours before closing it.They will have clamped themselves to girders I expect, but a taste of ‘the high life’ up there for quite a while may have done them good.

I have suggested on another thread they should be targeting youngsters who are buying the latest mobile phones, buying fast fashion, buying water in plastic bottles, buying everything that's disposable. The consumer society has a lot to answer for.

I don't know a single young person who buys single use plastic water bottles. Obviously there are some - but in my experience, young people all carry reusable bottles. Its the older people in my world constantly buying single use plastic bottles.

However - if it is the "youngsters" as you say - maybe look at their parents and grandparents for how they were brought up.

I truly detest that the first thing so many do is slate the young - the ones who had no part in making the world what it currently is.

volver Mon 17-Oct-22 15:25:14

I went to University in Dundee, then worked there for 25 years. When the bridge closed I went via Perth. It closes quite often because of "jumpers". I don't think they should be horse whipped, though.

What a shame it’s quite warm today with little wind blowing ?

What a nasty comment.

Prentice Mon 17-Oct-22 15:28:38

The young are often thoughtless though, as we probably all were once upon a time.
I do see youngsters drinking from plastic bottles, single use, all the time where I live, and munching crisps and throwing both bottles and wrappers on the ground afterwards.Usually on their way home from school.
