The Brexit effect: how leaving the EU hit the UK

A film from the Financial Times

You have mentioned the elephant in the room. We mustn’t say much about it as it was a democratic decision made by the “majority” of the public. So well done Johnson and the Daily Mail for encouraging so many to vote to leave. The former as a known self seeking lier and a paper which Wikipedia refuse to classify as a news paper due to its content only containing 30% of the truth.

This film is 28 minutes long but well worth watching for anyone interested in learning the truth about the effect of brexit.

I don’t need to watch the film I can see it happening all around me…

I think this thread will go awfully quiet.

I've just come off a SM site where the Brexit effect was being discussed, in quite sober and rational terms without any histrionics when there was a deluge of Brexit supporters (some shouting in CAPS) that we should "move on or move out", "get over it", "ge behind the country" and various other bits of advice. There was no attempt at any rational argument, just personal attacks against "sore loser Remoaners".

According to some of these posters, the ousting of Liz Truss is a 'Remoaner' plot to get us back into the EU and that her policy failures - her trashing of the economy - is all the fault of those who wouldn't accept the 'will of the people' over Brexit. So now you know - the economy is in the state it's in because of - Remainers!

It was at this point that I realised the sun was shining, the day looks promising, and my garden needs attention before the colder, darker days of winter set in.

Hope the sun is shining in your part of the country - wherever you are and you can make the most of it!

Only a lunatic fringe believe Brexit is a good thing. Rees-Mogg came up with no real Brexit Opportunities when he was Minister for the same. Who will be the next PM? We had Cameron, May, Johnson and now Truss. How about Larry the Cat. He couldn't do much worse but he probably isn't a Tory having been earwigging in No. 10 for so long.

I watched it. I think it's interesting even though nothing is new.

What is a SM site Dickens (it made me think it was going to be a mildly risqué joke about punishing ourselves)?

dickens these Brexit loud mouths are very much in the minority though, and will continue to dwindle as the economy gets worse and worse.

Starmer is no fool and has no intention of drawing a huge target on his back by talking about Brexit, and giving the far right gift but it is obvious that if labour are voted into power, they are inheriting a situation, worse than any government has ever inherited, and one if the easiest ways of boosting the economy will be to join the single market and the customs union.

A nationwide day of protest and strikes in France. All is not well in the EU. I voted to remain in case anyone thinks I'm a brexiteer. Important to note that it's not just GB struggling these days. Putin must be happy. ?

Ha ha! Thanks Maizie and Dickens

It’s not looking too healthy in the eu, either, but our press and media outlets don’t tell you this.

At least they have functioning governments

Excellent, varian, thanks for posting the link.

On Radio 4's "Political Thinking" ex brexit minister David Frost confirmed what I have long thought - that the Conservative Party is not the Brexit Party.

MaizieD Sat 22-Oct-22 21:01:31

What is it, then, varian?

Katie59 Sat 22-Oct-22 23:32:03

Brexit is a fact of life there is no point complaining, I was hugely disappointed we voted leave. Even more disappointed with my friends, who could not see through the Brexit lie told by Johnson et al.
It’s a crazy world when Johnson has been disgraced large numbers of Tories still want him back

Katie59 Sat 22-Oct-22 23:46:06

Wether Starmer will be able to join the Customs Union is not straightforward, there will have to be a lot of changes to enable that, many Labour voters would be opposed to those.
The EU would be in the driving seat and would not compromise, we rejoin to their rules and I don’t see it happening anytime soon.

You're confusing the Customs Union with the EU, Katie59.

And I'll remind you that two thirds of Labour voters voted Remain.

And Labour is some 30 points ahead in the polls...

Katie59 Sun 23-Oct-22 00:18:55

Not confusing Maizie, they would insist on Shengen and reverting to their regulations in many areas. Labour voters in the North and East voted leave largely on the migrant issue so although I would love to see us in the Customs Union I don’t see it happening.

Nor will an independant Scotland unless there is a customs border with England. Brexit opened Pandora’s box and it’s going to be very difficult to close the lid, when we made so many enemies in the EU.

Sorry about the typo.

This should have read "the Conservative Party is NOW the Brexit Party"⁴

Customs Union has nothing to do with Schengen, Katie59. Nor does the Single Market, come to that.

Most of the Leave voters I know ( I live in the NE) are tory voters...

I’ve more to worry about than things that won’t change. Too much going on with the Prime Minister fiasco.

Ah, but there are still some addicted to "Brexit", that word with no actual meaning. It really is something to pity.

Many have reached rock bottom, apologised for their behaviour and have been "sober" for some time. Others still believe in the "high" it promised. It has split families in some cases. One problem is that the "pusher" is back. Many cannot stay away.

In some ways, a drug, any drug, seems an easy way to a high; that feeling that "we won". However, they destroy lives. The wish to repeat that sense of euphoria continues to be sought. Yes, it makes for inappropriate behaviour - shouting at others and trying to sell them their drug, but that is what happens to the addicted.

Sadly too, it can lead to anxiety and a loss of mental sharpness. We see this in the belief that hanging on to the drug "Brexit" is something they need, although even they, in more rational moments, may be able to see that nothing good and a great deal of harm comes from it. Then there is the paranoia, the feeling that everyone is against them, the lashing out of the frightened paranoid.

It's very, very sad. All we can hope is that, over time, most will recover.
