This now leaves the field free for Rishi Sunak to our next Prime Mjnister.

If Rishi Sunak were to win, the focus of the privileges committee I am absolutely certain would move straight onto Rishi Sunak and what he knew - in order to embolden Labours call for a general election. With Rishi we will be in general election territory within weeks.

Curlywhirly Sun 23-Oct-22 21:22:13

Yes, as from tomorrow.

That was in answer to Kalu

Johnson is now saying that if he had stood he would have won and would be PM next week. It’s all about him. Everything is about him. Not the country, not the party but him.

I can imagine a little of what it must have felt like as a gladiator: waiting to see what horror they were going to unleash. (Apologies to any gladiators, or family thereof)

Boris Johnson confirms he won't stand. Boris Johnson has said that due to the failure to reach a deal with Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, “I am afraid the best thing is that I do not allow my nomination to go forward and commit my support to whoever succeeds.” The former prime minister said: I believe I am well placed to deliver a Conservative victory in 2024 – and tonight I can confirm that I have cleared the very high hurdle of 102 nominations, including a proposer and a seconder, and I could put my nomination in tomorrow. “There is a very good chance that I would be successful in the election with Conservative party members – and that I could indeed be back in Downing Street on Friday. “But in the course of the last days I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do. You can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament.”

vegansrock Sun 23-Oct-22 21:29:28

There would have been a collapse in the government within weeks with Johnson back, with Sunak it will take a little longer.

Wyllow3 Sun 23-Oct-22 21:34:21

Boris imo has been a complete hypocrite.

He has been waiting to see how much support he got without saying a thing.

then once he found out that he was unlikely to get more than 50 supporting him,

he claims oh, hw wasn't really interested all along.

so now he can do the Important Experienced Remark of course my own interest was the Party's wellbeing.

I've been waiting for this all day once it was made clear that his numbers were not going to rise.

RichmondPark1 Sun 23-Oct-22 21:34:54

His statement sounds like it was written by Donald Trump.

I got nominations bigly.
Whatever you say, I'm the rightful winner of the next election.
You can't govern effectively unless you have a united party. Sad.

Johnson is now saying that if he had stood he would have won and would be PM next week. It’s all about him. Everything is about him. Not the country, not the party but him.

Well, it is no longer about him and may we never see his like again. An overflated buffoon full of his own importance. He will no doubt believe his own lies and say he has done a wonderful job.

vegansrock Sun 23-Oct-22 21:38:28

Trouble is others have been gaslight and think he’s done a wonderful job too. However, he wouldn’t have been able to persuade experienced ministers, apart from Nadine, to serve in his cabinet, so a new Johnson administration would fail from the start,

M0nica Sun 23-Oct-22 21:39:37

To begin with I do not believe that he had 102 supporters, plus proposer and seconder, as he claimed. he has a repution for telling his truth, which is usually at variance with everyone elses.

I also suspect that he will also have been doing some private polling, which told him that whatever may have been his pulling power in 2019 that he is now, generally seen in the country as a liar and a cheat, who thinks rules are for other people, and if he returned to power now he would be a liability to the party in the next election, not to mention the various enquries going on into his actionsduring COVID.

vegansrock I agree with you over Johnson, but not on Sunak. I think if he becomes PM we will see a return to 'normal' parliamentary business, and with 2 years to go before the next election he could stabilise the Conservative party and make it re-electable. I am not talking about what I want, but what i see as possible.

Zoejory Sun 23-Oct-22 21:41:57

I never believed he'd stand. The country just couldn't have coped with him and all the fallout.

Rishi can do what he can but his time as PM will be limited

We just have to wait for a GE to be called

rubysong Sun 23-Oct-22 21:42:57

What a load of nonsense his statement is. He couldn't get enough backers, also he knows the investigation will find he misled Parliament so he would have to stand down even if he won.

OnwardandUpward Sun 23-Oct-22 21:44:16

The only reason I think it might have been permissible to have Boris is that it would probably have finished off the conservative party. But, how many people would have to suffer for that and what would it do to the country?

I think this is a fair conclusion although I'm sure that the Conservatives will continue to fail.

Deedaa Sun 23-Oct-22 21:48:10

"You can't govern effectively unless you have a united party" and who was it who destroyed the united party? Oh that would be Boris and his minions.

avitorl Sun 23-Oct-22 21:48:48

Thankfully he has withdrawn but I think his real reason for that is to save face and not for noble reasons.
I don't believe he had over 100 supporters. He can definitely be relied upon to be consistent though where lying is concerned.

vegansrock Sun 23-Oct-22 21:55:15

He stood aside, even though he knew he would have won, in the national interest . He will now devote himself to serving the constituents of Uxbridge for which he is paid a publicly funded salary. Such a noble and honourable gentleman.

What a load of nonsense his statement is. He couldn't get enough backers, also he knows the investigation will find he misled Parliament so he would have to stand down even if he won.

And there were people saying that they were prepared to give more evidence to incriminate him.

BlueBelle Sun 23-Oct-22 22:01:51

What planet are you on *Vegansrock’
He stood aside!!! ???
He didn’t get the numbers yet another lie to add to all his others
The only thing Johnson has ever devoted himself to is Johnson

Fleurpepper Sun 23-Oct-22 22:04:47

Pheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew!

Fleurpepper Sun 23-Oct-22 22:06:27

what is he up to though? Wouldn't trust him with a barge pole!

Prentice Sun 23-Oct-22 22:06:58

Well that is certainly a relief.
Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt now stand a good chance to try and put things right.
We do need serious politicians in those top jobs and Boris Johnson is the last person we need to return.
