This now leaves the field free for Rishi Sunak to our next Prime Mjnister.

BlueBelle Sun 23-Oct-22 22:09:01

In a way Johnson being PM again would have really put the sword in the heart of the party and we may have got rid of them quicker especially if he kept making his usual lying mistakes

Fleurpepper Sun 23-Oct-22 22:09:34

Will Mordaunt pull out tomorrow?

To begin with I do not believe that he had 102 supporters, plus proposer and seconder, as he claimed. he has a repution for telling his truth, which is usually at variance with everyone elses.

I also suspect that he will also have been doing some private polling, which told him that whatever may have been his pulling power in 2019 that he is now, generally seen in the country as a liar and a cheat, who thinks rules are for other people, and if he returned to power now he would be a liability to the party in the next election, not to mention the various enquries going on into his actionsduring COVID.

vegansrock I agree with you over Johnson, but not on Sunak. I think if he becomes PM we will see a return to 'normal' parliamentary business, and with 2 years to go before the next election he could stabilise the Conservative party and make it re-electable. I am not talking about what I want, but what i see as possible.

This is a good comment and I agree.Although I too hope that there will be a Labour win at the next election, I think for the good of the country in the next two years, the two people who will now be in the hot seats are what is needed.

He stood aside!!! ???
He didn’t get the numbers yet another lie to add to all his others
The only thing Johnson has ever devoted himself to is Johnson

I thought vegansrock's post was tongue-in-cheek!

He stood aside, even though he knew he would have won, in the national interest . He will now devote himself to serving the constituents of Uxbridge for which he is paid a publicly funded salary. Such a noble and honourable gentleman.

Love it, thanks. Sure!

I think Johnson probably did have the necessary number of supporters, if only just. The problem was that he couldn't hope for more, so didn't stand a chance of winning. It will most likely now be Rishi. Almost half the party members didn't want him last time, so I wonder how they will feel about him.

Johnson is now saying that if he had stood he would have won and would be PM next week. It’s all about him. Everything is about him. Not the country, not the party but him.

This is Boris speak for "I now realise that I cannot reach 100 MP supporters and don't want it to become public knowledge that I am so much less popular than Rishi"

I bet he really regrets cutting short his Caribbean holiday - he was so sure he would win!

Yes he has really been supporting the needs of his constituents in these difficult and chaotic times from a luxury resort in the Caribbean

OnwardandUpward Sun 23-Oct-22 22:23:25

If they cant get along we should have a genral election because the party is weak and divided, not fit for purpose. If they can put aside their differences and have some unity, perhaps there is hope yet.

Oldbat1 Sun 23-Oct-22 22:25:22

Wow what an arrogant self centred total buffoon. Self self self.

grumppa Sun 23-Oct-22 22:25:38

A great sense of relief. If Truss showed herself to be the most incompetent PM of my lifetime, Johnson was by a mile the most despicable.

Wyllow3 Sun 23-Oct-22 22:32:52

I suspect Vegansrock was being sardonic!

Nana3 Sun 23-Oct-22 22:39:50

Yes Grumpa, a great sense of relief.
On the 10 o'clock news they said that Johnson said, this is not the right time.
Does he have ' a cunning plan ' ?

Jane71 Sun 23-Oct-22 22:44:18

Part of me would have liked Johnson to be PM just so I could watch the Tories continue to make complete fools of themselves. But the sensible part of me thinks Sunak will be best for the country.

Grantanow Sun 23-Oct-22 22:49:33

Thank God! If we have to have a Tory PM Sunak is the far better choice than the buffoon. Mordaunt is competent and I hope she is made a Secretary of State. Johnson can go back on holiday though his constituents may have views about that. Next stop: a Labour government.

Is it still the case that if one candidate gets more than half of mp's votes, they automatically get the gig without referring to the membership. Does anyone know?

nanna8 Sun 23-Oct-22 22:59:25

Oh that is the best result. It would have made the UK look absolutely ridiculous to have that Boris buffoon back. Hope whoever it is is a bit more conscientious and might actually care about the country he/she leads.

Ginny42 Sun 23-Oct-22 23:04:15

He already had a huge question mark over his head for taking a 'sicky' in the Caribbean. Parliament was in session, and he should have been at work.

I question the moral compass of the supporters who think his behaviour acceptable. They must share the same low morals and lack of decency.

So, was the Truss fiasco all part of a plan when she came from behind to win the leadership campaign supported by people who knew that she would fail? They knew she was a weak candidate. Johnson was to be 5,000 miles way when she bombed, and he would scurry back to take what he believed would be his 'Hasta la vista' moment. Was she was used to get him back into Number 10? Thankfully it seems others had a different idea.

Espero que esta vez hayamos visto la espalda de el ... Hope this time we've seen the back of him.

maddyone Sun 23-Oct-22 23:04:37

Rishi it is then.

Wyllow3 Sun 23-Oct-22 23:18:56

what is he up to though? Wouldn't trust him with a barge pole!

Licking narcisstic wounds?

That post saves me saying much else other than with some time this country will cease to be a laughing stock. Then perhaps we will be seen as a credible option to do business with.

vegansrock Mon 24-Oct-22 05:54:04

We have had enough of entertainment in politics. I remember being bored with political news. If Sunak doesn’t make the mistakes of Truss and Johnson and does not surround himself with sycophantic followers, but includes both sides of the party in his cabinet, then there is hope for some stability. Otherwise we’ll just limp along from crisis to crisis. I believe there should be a GE now, but know that isn’t going to happen with Johnson out of the race. Anyone who wanted Johnson back must have the same moral compass as him- be a liar and a cheat themselves or be happy to live with one.

MrsKen33 Mon 24-Oct-22 06:08:54

Thank goodness .But I bet Nadine is upset.
