I don’t think that the Tories will now be United though. Sunak is not liked by a big minority.

However, perhaps they will make an effort for the good of the country? We can but hope.

Agree with Vegansrock, we need a couple of years of stability to get the county on track. Not a fan of Sunak but I think it will be him. Let's have a time of no big dramatics, just get on with the job. Boris will no doubt settle down to write his memoirs. But he will be waiting his chance to get back, now he has had his three Caribbean holidays.

I wonder if Uxbridge voters might make a change at the next GE? Asking for a friend, obviously.

I suppose he could go back to the Carribbean unless his constituents need him to be in the UK. I think he's only had 4 holidays this year - how dreadful.

Nicola Sturgeon will be disappointed. She will still bang the drum railing against nasty Westminster but without the Boris bashing her balloon may feel a bit deflated this morning. I think with Rishi Sunak the Union has a better chance going forward. So, in my opinion, this result is to be welcomed.

I also think it puts added pressure on Rishi Sunak. Being PM at this time will be challenging. We’ve had our personal tax allowances frozen for two years. He’s hit the ordinary man in the street hard and his over generous furlough scheme (higher than anywhere in Europe) has created a huge debt. I’m not sure that he’s a true Tory (low taxes, small state) but all things considered, he probably is the best choice.

Ahem! In what way was the furlough scheme "over generous"? It seems Johnson might not have been 100% accurate when he claimed that the UK's furlough scheme was “far more generous… than anything provided in France, Germany or Ireland”.

Well Boris has got himself lots of publicity for the book he is trying to finish and apparently lots of speaking engagements books. All publicity is good publicity?!

I agree. I have no doubt a few people played the system (people always do), but the country would have been in an even bigger mess without it.

I suspect Boris is playing the electorate again. Good bloke came back to try and lead the country again, stepped down for party unity. Got us through covid and Brexit but didn't get the credit. Just because he's a bit of a lad.
Not my view but I can imagine in 2 years time his halo will be polished up and ready for a GE. Meantime Sunak can try and sort out the economy and take the blame.
It might not be 2 years it might be 7 years. With a brief spell of Labour in power. But I fear he will be back .

I believe he means all human rights laws which 'lefty lawyers' 'manipulate' to stop the Tories treating people badly.

For those who missed this, I do hope that this caller does not, as he claims, speak for Conservatives. I take comfort that he seems only to speak for those who love England. He is clearly a one nation Conservative. As someone has posted, Sunak is not popular with everyone.

I think you are right Glorianny. Boris has his eye to the main chance and now isn’t it. As he says the time is not right. We haven’t seen the last of him by any means. I can’t relish the thought of Sunak either - there are things in his cupboard too! It’s like a barrel of rotten apples.

I think and hope that BJ may find soon something more lucrative and popular to do than being MP for Uxbridge.

Zoejory my recollection was that RS justified allocating some funding to Tonbridge Wells for something or other by saying that wealthy areas sometimes needed help as well as deprived ones. Dubious thinking certainly but not quite taking money away. No idea whether they ever got it.
If he wins I think and hope he'll appoint a competent cabinet.
