Feeling strangely, quietly, a little bit optimistic

Bear with me here.(1) The UK has finally kicked Johnson out, and I anticipate there will soon be disgrace, removal of the whip and removal from the HoC for him, his peculiar rise to fame has become infamy, although I do not underestimate his vanity and self belief. (2) Trump's days are ending too, courtrooms and disgrace beckon, finally for this disgusting charlatan (3) Even the BBC are discussing the negative impact of Brexit, the elephant in the room. Yes, there are very hard times ahead, and I am not ignoring Putin or China, but I am feeling ever so slightly optimistic that I was right; that the immoral Trump and Johnson would get their come uppance, and that Brexit was a huge mistake.

I was optimistic until I saw the new cabinet, it does not fill me with confidence.

I find so many comments here unpleasant. I am a supporter of Boris Johnstone. Mistakes that were made under his leadership were blown out of proportion and contained mockery of him as Prime Minister by the media including the BBC. To continue with such remarks and now of Liz Truss is disdainful. What happened to kindness and tolerance where it is recognized, that people including politicians work hard and do their best, and yes sometimes get it wrong.

Hunt and Sunk

Probably a typo but this did make me chuckle, spabbygirl ?

Politicians don't get elected for us to cut them some slack and be nice to them.

They get elected to run the country with integrity and talent and to take responsibility when things go wrong due to their egregiously wrong policies.

I think a big proportion of people have forgotten how politicians are meant to act and what they are there for.

I feel tempted to quote both Victor Meldrew and John McEnroe about this post.

It’s okay, Boris Johnstone is an imposter.

volver Wed 26-Oct-22 13:06:52

It's a David Davis/David Davies moment. wink

Politicians have to make hard decisions, of course. But I find it unforgivable that BJ missed meetings early on in the Coronavirus Pandemic - that he acted with brevity "shaking hands" - and was then seriously ill with Covid - oh, I could go on and on. He, in my opinion, deserves all the mockery that can be thrown at him. "Let the bodies pile high" - so wrong in so many ways and so many times. And when I see Conservative politicians lay the vaccines as being Boris's success story I rage - the complacency of thinking that no other Government or Party could have done the same - or better -

I think it brave of Nanny

Brave of Nanny19 to post..... interrupted by cat on keyboard!

Hunt and Sunk are a nightmare combination, both want the end of the NHS, but Sunak will do it in a more subtle way. And Braverman is a disaster to anyone who cares about people from foreign lands needing sanctuary. I can't wait to get all the Tories out, as we'll see in a few weeks I'm sure

This is my feeling too.

Braverman ... shudder!

To really put things right we need to go back in the EU. Small businesses are losing European customers, and those that can are moving setting up in European locations to avoid customs and paperwork. One small niche tea company at a trade fair heard her potential customers saying ‘It’s not worth going there’ (to her stand). So she has negotiated a distributor in the EU - but she has to pay the distributor a percentage of sales. A larger company making chemical has relocated their whole operation to Poland, taking jobs and profits away from the UK.
Another small company a two person jewellery concern, does not have the capacity to overcome the beauracracy and is hanging on by its fingertips.
We were lied to in the most reprehensible way by (mostly) wealthy politicians who see Brexit as an ideal opportunity to abandon workers rights, dip below EU safety standards and sit comfortably with their execrable snouts in the trough while the rest of us pay the price

I know what you mean HousePlantQueen. I don't think next year will be great but maybe we will start to see the end of personality politics.

I do hope so.
I feel more optimistic too, though of course there are many problems here and in the rest of the world.

C123 Wed 26-Oct-22 14:18:48

Where's the evidence please?
I would like to go through it and make an informed decision ?

chatterbox2 Wed 26-Oct-22 14:28:24

Nanny19 I'm in total agreement with you

Nanny19 Wed 26-Oct-22 14:28:31

Of course politicians are not beyond criticism or reproach and should not be allowed to continue in office if they are inadequate in there post as MP. What I find unpleasant is the way they are criticized. The mockery and sarcasm is unnecessary. I hear it from MPs in the House of Commons, the belittling, the degradation of personalities, the destruction of them as people and now to me reading some of your replies.

Prentice Wed 26-Oct-22 14:31:02

That means reading news, looking at articles online and on tv and making your informed decision C123 but this optimistic feeling is that really, no hard evidence as yet, although the money markets are looking brighter for the UK.

Prentice Wed 26-Oct-22 14:32:20

It is the way of the world now sadly nanny19 and sarcasm is often mistaken for wit.

Galaxy Wed 26-Oct-22 15:08:17

Sarcasm is often witty though.

volver Wed 26-Oct-22 15:48:03

“Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, but the highest form of intelligence.”

Oscar Wilde

Prentice Wed 26-Oct-22 16:01:31

I think only sarcastic people say that Volver
Especially if they are being sarcastic to be unpleasant. It isn’t an attractive trait at all, nor does it denote high intelligence.

volver Wed 26-Oct-22 16:02:28

People like Oscar, you mean?

OK smile

Prentice Wed 26-Oct-22 16:06:27

Oscar Wilde was a deeply unhappy man.He wrote amusing plays and clearly was very intelligent and an Oxford graduate.
His quotes were merely meant to be amusing, not pearls of wisdom.y

Prentice Wed 26-Oct-22 16:06:51

Hmm, an errant y there.

volver Wed 26-Oct-22 16:11:07

So hang on...

OW wrote something about sarcasm.

Prentice says only sarcastic people say things (like) that.

Prentice says sarcasm does not denote high intelligence.

Prentice says OW was highly intelligent.

Nope. Beyond me.

Prentice Wed 26-Oct-22 16:19:23

I have said before to you volver that I do not engage for long with posters who are looking out for a verbal scrap, it really is not worth the effort. That being the case, a sarcastic tongue or pen alone does not denote high intelligence, end of discussion from me.
