He’s got a lot on his plate right now. He’s definitely doing things differently to Boris. “Focusing on domestic issues”.

On a lighter note, all they do is produce a lot of hot air.
Watching Frozen Planet last Sunday showed that our grandchildren are going to face some serious decisions.

No lass, we face the decisions. And unless we make them, your grandchildren are f**ked.

Exactly so.

You know we are living through climate change and have been doing so for years.

I can give a lived example.

For the past 20 years we have been walking various dogs by a river quite near the estuary. It has 2 banks- one lower than the other. 20 years ago the lower bank flooded twice a year - spring tides.

Now it floods every month at least and often more.

That is as a result if the rising sea levels because of melting ice.

The environment energy has recently constructed flood defences to the tune of £25million to defend Shoreham by Sea but it is already clear that it will very soon be insufficient. It is all happening far quicker than the scientists expected.

That has happened in such a short time it is scary.

Just seen BBC news again - they did a piece on how many people are having difficulty getting to work because of petrol prices - affecting many people. Ended it showing a Shell petrol station, the one that has just made that obscene profit.....

deliberate, I think.

My next door neighbour is working from home today.

In my "professional" days I went to quite a lot of conferences. Some were relatively local, some were National and some were International.

Mostly I wasn't excited about going but once I got there I was generally buzzing! New ideas, new challenges, new people, new ways of doing things... new ideas by the "water cooler" or over lunch.

Being there is worth a hundred "virtuals". It's not usually what happens in the lecture theatre that informs your practice and motivates you (though sometimes it really is that) - it's often what is talked about between sessions and during workshops.

If you haven't been to a conference with truly driven people you cannot know this.

The conferences I've attended haven't all been life changing- but I can think of at least two which have been.
They have changed both my life and my work.

Please don't just dismiss COP27.

Good decision by Sunak not to go in my opinion he's got plenty to sort out here.

karmalady Fri 28-Oct-22 12:24:27

Well done Rishi, working on uk priorities right now. We have already done more than our bit. There is a uk delegation going, doubt if it will make any difference to india or china

We haven't "done our bit". Not at all. But even if we had, that wouldn't be worth a blind bit of difference because the climate doesn't know we're British. The sea level won't stay stable for the UK because we "did our bit". The temperatures won't stay stable here and just go and upset those foreign folks.

This isn't like Brexit. We can't stand in glorious isolation saying "we're British you know". Some days, I just think we're doomed. ??‍♀️

Alie2Oxon Fri 28-Oct-22 13:05:54

Some days, I just think we're doomed....?

Me too. I've been concerned for many years and just watched it getting worse.
I won't see much of it, of course. My children and great=grandchildren (3) will see it.

I fear for them.

Zoejory Fri 28-Oct-22 13:09:06

I'm with Greta Thunberg on this. These get togethers tend to involve an awful lot of blah blah blah.

volver Fri 28-Oct-22 13:10:50

So what would you do instead Zoejory?

Alie2Oxon Fri 28-Oct-22 13:26:23

This is still a get-together this is part of what's needed. We shouldn't put it down.

Greta is doing things in other ways - good. David Attenborough is speaking about it in every one of his programmes.

George Monbiot ain't bad either...and the Extinction people may be extreme and annoying, but they are saying something -and please, don't let's go on about how awful they are on here.

This is a thread about COP27 and its importance as part of a struggle we need to win!

soldiersailor Fri 28-Oct-22 13:55:30

Well... Mark Twain once said that the only thing more difficult than fooling someone is convincing them they HAVE been fooled!
I deal with facts, not hysteria. I'm glad the PM isn't going as he'll be wasting his time. All these COPs are full of arch hypocrites who jet in for a jamboree (to hell with the cost in CO2) make some fairly innocuous promises they'll never keep and tell the world 'Aren't we all wonderful?'

I don't trust any of these doom mongers who parrot about a crisis. I read about factual information on the GWPF, Not A Lot Of People Know That and I watch videos on Rumble by Tony Heller. Then you'll know it's nothing more than a sham because the more you scare people the more you can control them. If their case is so strong why do they stifle any attempt a debate? Why tell lies? Why distort facts? Why be selective in showing graphs.
Here's an example: We've all been shocked at wildfires in the USA and Oz. But they don't tell you that over TEN TIMES more land was burnt in the 1920s than in the last few years (Tony Heller checks newspapers from that time). And that's because they don't want you to know.

I certainly don't trust the BBC, the Guardian, George Monbiot (what a laugh he is!) or Davis Attenborough, all of whom have a poor track record in handling truth when it conflicts with their message.

Oh and lastly, not one, NO NOT ONE climate prediction by the warmists has come true over the last 40 years. And how many 'tripping points' has our king got into a lather about? All have come, all have gone.

So I don't worry for my grandchildren, they will be fine, and so will yours.

So please don't worry ladies - and don't be fooled.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 28-Oct-22 13:59:00

The list of leaders who will not attend Cop27.

Sunak, Putin, Bolsonaro…

See the connection?

Not true

Oh no, sorry. You can be as deluded as you like but nobody gets to diss Sir David.

And how many 'tripping points' has our king got into a lather about? All have come, all have gone.

40 years ago, the prediction was that once the Larsen B Ice Shelf went, and the bogs in Siberia started outgassing, we'd gone beyond the tipping point.

Guess what?

I suppose, if your thoughts are aligned with The Global Warming Policy Foundation you are basically challenging man-made climate change?

Witzend Fri 28-Oct-22 14:04:21

IMO Charles should go. He was into protecting the environment well before it became ‘fashionable’ - if I’m allowed to use such a word in this context - and I think on those grounds he commands a lot of international respect.

choughdancer Fri 28-Oct-22 14:14:48

I hate to tell you, but those three sources of 'facts' are very biased; I think you need to read other sources so that you can put those 'facts' into context.

At the moment you seem to be in an echo chamber; it might need to be broken open.

NotSpaghetti Fri 28-Oct-22 14:14:55

Unfortunately the "advice" for Charles NOT to go, still stands.

I’ve now realised why Alok Sharma supported Johnson and I think I’m right in thinking he hasn’t got a ministerial position in Sunak’s cabinet. I think Sunak has made it clear how high on his agenda the environment is.

I thought about that too. Sharma, I believe, gave his support to Johnson on that basis... understandably.

And you're right, I believe, he doesn't now have a position in the cabinet. Truss re-appointed him, but now he's gone... still the President of COP26 I believe...

I'd like to see Charles go - he's pretty passionate and would show our commitment, but is it too much of a 'political' matter? And he said he'd row back on his previous 'interests' now. Which is a shame. Actually, I preferred him as a 'Prince' - but that's another issue.
