Scarf in Suffragette colours not allowed in Scottish Parliament.

During stage 2 hearings of the GRR Bill in the Scottish Parliament, women are being asked to either remove scarves knitted in Suffragette colours of green, purple and white or leave. At least one woman has chosen to leave. And yet quite a few of the MSPs are wearing Rainbow lanyards.

^The woman who was asked to leave is a political activist^

How did they know she was a political activist? Do they have a list, with photos, of political activists who they wish to challenge and/or censor their clothing?

They may or may not have known she is a political activist, they probably don't have a list because, contrary to apparently popular belief, Scotland's not a police state nor a one-party state.

I worked it out for myself from looking at her twitter feed, a link to which was provided in the OP. hmm

J52 Someone has tweeted that tomorrow they’ll wear purple, green and white clothes. She wonders if she’ll be asked to strip?

I was just thinking that,Granny dark hair. A nice green suit with a purple and white blouse. Maybe she could have her undies in the same colours and a bit of body paint if she is asked to do the full Monty.

Good to see there's been an apology.

The woman who was asked to leave is a political activist

So what?

*The woman who was asked to leave is a political activist*

So what?

She was making a statement.

She should be allowed to make that statement,

The Presiding Officer has already apologised for heavy handed "enforcement".

Anyone trying to say it's all about controlling what women wear, or nullifying the message of the suffragettes, is either misinformed or disingenuous.

Baggs Tue 15-Nov-22 15:44:06

She was making a statement. She should be allowed to make that statement

Just so. So why was she asked to leave?

And of course she, and the rest of the population of Scotland, should receive an apology.

volver Tue 15-Nov-22 15:49:56

She's had an apology.

Are you not following this?

Rosie51 Tue 15-Nov-22 15:56:41

The Presiding Officer has already apologised for heavy handed "enforcement". except those words weren't used at all were they? It was 'errors' a much milder word.

You didn't appear to be endorsing

She was making a statement.

She should be allowed to make that statement,

in your earlier posts before the apology.

Are you not following this?

Yes, I'm following. And reasserting my disgust at what happened.

I KNOW and KNEW there had been an apology, V.

I STILL wanted to express my disgust that an apology was needed in the Scottish Parliament. I found it absolutely shocking.

Not shouting, btw, just emphasising. Hope what I'm saying and have been saying is clear now 🙂

Baggs Tue 15-Nov-22 16:06:17

I may carry on expressing my disgust for days!

Not on here though so you'll be safe.

Yammy the day our late Queen officially opened the Scottish Parliament, she wore a purple suit, gloves and hat. Her top was green and the white was provided by her pearls naturally.

volver Tue 15-Nov-22 16:11:21

Here's my take...

A woman who champions the rights of ... actually, not sure, what she champions the rights of, but anyway...

This woman chose to wear a scarf in the colours of the suffragette movement. The colours of the suffragette movement have been worn many times in the Scottish Parliament. There are pictures to prove it.... 😉

The Gender Critical movement have co-opted the colours to support their premise that women's rights are being eroded, and in this case the colours were prominently displayed at a committee discussing the GRR. A Parliament official overreacted and asked her to remove the scarf. The Presiding Officer has since apologised for that action.

Now we have overwrought complaints about removing women's rights, controlling what they wear, how Sturgeon is a hypocrite and (saints preserve us) how independence just isn't permissible. Never mind, it's filled my afternoon with some banter...

Oh disingenuous, innocent Volver yet again 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Who posts, but should never be held accountable for those posts 🤣🤣🤣🤣

There weren't enough straws for you to clutch at over the bridge comment though were there? Just flounced off!

The bridge comment?

Was I asleep then....?

Missed it.

Anyway.

I don't have to endorse anything to make you happy. You'll just have to stay fashed.

OnwardandUpward Tue 15-Nov-22 16:18:06

If the Queen wore it, it ought to be ok for all women to wear those colours. You could hardly call her an activist, but she had principles.

I don't think it's ok to censor what someone wears, but if their behaviour was bad, censor that.

Galaxy Tue 15-Nov-22 16:22:02

Crikey people do need a better strategy when faced with a tiny gender critical protest, I mean the opponents seem to spend their life apologising or having legal action against them.

Rosie51 Tue 15-Nov-22 16:23:00

The bridge comment?

You've forgotten your 'jumpers' comment? I can quote you if you'd like me to? Was only a few weeks ago. Rather an insensitive one.

Not fashed at all. Of course you don't have to endorse anything, just don't pretend to be all reasonable after the event. Perhaps you need not to get so worked up at any criticism of happenings in Scotland?

Oh, that has really made me laugh!

I'm glad an apology was given. I felt sure that it could only have been the action of an over zealous staff member.

I'm hoping that you're not using the term 'gender critical' pejoratively.

Oh. My. God.

(Apologies to people who don't like taking the Lord's name in vain. In this case I'm feeling entitled.)

I'll just flounce off now, keep my fans happy. (After answering MaizieD.) They can add it to what is obviously a list of everything I've posted in the last three months...😕

I'm not MaizieD. I believe that is the correct terminology but I will stand corrected if it's not.

I missed a lot of this through working!
Such fun. 🤣🤣🤣
I’m sure whoever wore the scarf never expected to have such an impact.

Publicity for a great cause?👏👏👏

People googling what the scarf meant!

Publicity about the wrong move.👏👏👏

An apology, however pathetic!

Straws or the clutching at them.

Dinna fash yersel Volver dear.

Hopefully there’ll be a lot more such scarves in any assembly-which will widen the publicity even further.

I wonder if it will make the news tonight?
