BBC News - Buckingham Palace aide resigns over remarks to black charity boss
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-63810468

Well at least the Palace took this incident seriously and didn't fob off Ms Fulani's complaint.

welbeck Thu 01-Dec-22 19:56:26

yes, on further thought, i think it's best to avoid the word race; so if necessary to describe, not sure why, then dual/mixed heritage.
but why define people in such terms at all ?

Urmstongran Thu 01-Dec-22 19:56:50

Actually I can’t imagine needing to describe people as such either welbeck you’re quite right. On that we agree. People are just people really and that’s how it should be. In a perfect world, sadly it’s not.

welbeck Thu 01-Dec-22 20:01:48

thanks for that picture, Urmst.

Iam64 Thu 01-Dec-22 20:03:14

Welbeck, one context where the equivalent to ‘mixed race’ would be in a document detailing a child’s cultural, ethic and racial background. Language matters

merlotgran Thu 01-Dec-22 20:08:15

I’ve never heard of Daniel Boland - some of you may have but I’d be interested in reading your comments on his take of the whole incident.

No need to shoot me down. I’m making no comment.

Did you see similar ethnic clothes on your High Street GG13?

Some of the older generation but the younger ones (my school mates) were totally in jeans etc.

welbeck Thu 01-Dec-22 20:21:12

if you did the 11-plus in boro of hackney, i'm guessing that was 50+ years ago ?

Iam64 Thu 01-Dec-22 20:22:44

Animal print clothes are everywhere, even m and s

Because it is a racist trope to ask where someone is from. It's part of the standard racist playbook, along with
'I'm not a racist but...',
'Some of my best friends are black...',
'Strong black woman...',
'Playing the race card...'.

See attached list. Ironically, 'Where are you from' is right at the top.

So, when it comes down to it, you believe everyone, bar you and those who agree with you, is racist (as determined by you and not the law).

I feel Prevent should be alerted; you show signs of radicalisation. You can tell by the number of ways and times it's suggested that other people are racist! There is the anger, "you said this, or did that", or simply, "you don't agree with my view", and suddenly, the answer to all these is "you must be racist". There are signs of the repetition of a script in your posts; I think the word "micro" says it all. Then there are the extreme views - 90% of people would agree with you?

Oh, dear. Will GN be closed down? Will MI5 (or is it 6?) be on their way? Will we ever have a balanced conversation again? Will people ever admit that not everyone shares their opinion but that doesn't make them lawbreakers or any form of 'ist'?

In the 60’s

Hackney was culturally diverse, my parents were publicans.

I’ve read most of this thread and hesitate to make a comment but what I found interesting and pathetic was what Petronella Wyatt (ex squeeze of Boris) said about the matter on Radio 4 last night. She was energetically defending ‘poor Susan Hussey’ and she intimated that the ‘ladies’ were paid and that poor Susan would be bereft at losing her job and the remuneration she receives! As if! It was well known that her husband had held good positions and they were probably quite comfortable if not wealthy. Petronella was heartbroken about how SH would manage! However, the newspapers have reported that the ladies receive no remuneration, so who knows?

We moved to Surrey for two years I was amazed at the absence of cultural diversity. Fortunately balance was restored when family finally settled between Essex and mainland Europe were my sister was educated.

I'm a white woman living in France. I have blond hair.
I am constantly taken for Dutch, German, Swedish, and yes
English. I don't take it as racist and I know the person asking
(normally a french person) doesn't think they are being racist.
Its also assumed I come from London, so what.
Alot of the replies on this thread are over the top, get real,
some of the posters seem to be angels.

I think he summed her up perfectly.
Faux indignant grifter.
I note that he feels the same as me referencing the word abuse.

Being white means racism is so much less likely than if we are black. It’s not complicated is it

It isn't. But it's incomprehensible to some.

Mollygo Thu 01-Dec-22 21:09:13

Being black in Liverpool means you can be very racist towards your ‘other coloured’ neighbours. But if they complain, it’s your feelings that get the publicity.

I thought he made the point well. We do not all get immersed in the minutiae of whether we should sniff to the right or cough to the left to ensure we are not making racist remarks.

Many, especially older people, those unlikely to mix with radicalisers and those unlikely to go on the "inter-web" are simply not interested but nor do they mean to offend. They often live happy lives being basically good people or at least as good as those throwing out accusations left and right on here are.

These people do not need their lives destroying by people furthering their careers.

NanKate Thu 01-Dec-22 21:40:18

Well done Daisy Anne excellent post. 👍

volver Thu 01-Dec-22 21:54:35

The inter-web?

And you think that's acceptable when discussing the lives and attitudes of older people? Seems it's not only racist behaviour some people practice without appreciating how judgemental and offensive they are.

Your turn now to tell me what an awful person I am.

Callistemon21 Thu 01-Dec-22 22:01:50

Blossoming

I’m trying to keep out of this as it’s turned into a regular shark tank, but would like to bring up the following point.

Asking Ms. Fulani where she was from was fine. Refusing to accept the answer given and carrying on to the point of rudeness was not.

No, it was wrong, absolutely wrong and offensive.

But equating it with rape, as one poster did, is nonsense and offensive.

Aveline Thu 01-Dec-22 22:05:59

Whereas, the posh, very privileged and spoiled woman was just misunderstood?

This is the equivalent to rape apologists.

B*ll*x!!

Several GN members are excusing racism. Swear about it all you like.

If you excuse discrimination, you are complicit.

If you excuse discrimination, you are complicit.

No love, that's another offensive post.
I don't excuse discrimination, I don't discriminate, I am not complicit.

Please stop bringing rape into this, that is what is truly offensive.
