So letting in a bit of reality - does this mean it is the beginning of the end of Brexit

So Sunak has said this morning that NI is the best placed country in the world because it has access to the EU single market and the U.K. market.

So what now? Sunak has said out loud that membership is the best thing for NI. What is stopping Scotland demanding the same? What about us in England. I’d quite like what NI has.

The best thing Britain ever did was to leave the EU. Why for heaven's sake would we want to go back into the EU and put our necks back in the noose?

I think your user name is deeply ironic.

Look at the chaotic state of the UK over the past few years and tell us what we have gained from leaving the EU.

The best thing Britain ever did was to leave the EU. Why for heaven's sake would we want to go back into the EU and put our necks back in the noose?

Just a simple question. Why was leaving the EU the best thing we ever did?

And this 'we'... we, who are I assume mostly in the twilight of our years here on GN- do we understand that the younger generation might feel and think differently? My 15 year-old grandson certainly does.

I would simply like to know this - what have we gained by leaving? I won't re-iterate all the hype surrounding the Leave campaign, we're all aware of it... the predictions, the 'promises', etc. But now most of the hoo-ha has died down and we've exited, just what have we gained. Or, to be strictly fair as it's still early days - what will we gain within, say, the next 10 years?

On a personal level, I've gained nothing. In fact I've lost. But I'm not going to bore anyone with the details. I don't know how long I have left, but I would like to understand if there is anything that I can look forward to. Not necessarily on a personal level but in terms of seeing my country prosper' seeing a more equitable society; seeing our nation - once respected - regain its status. I just want to understand what the benefits are. Acknowledging that the EU was / is not a perfect institution, I still feel we were as a country better off within it. But I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise.

But Dickens, Rees Mogg said the benefits might take 50 years didn’t he. If only that had been written I the side of the bus
sad

How many of us will be alive in 50 years, I wonder???

Even my GCs will be well into their 60s!!! And my ACs probably gone- 100 and 98!

Zoe65 Thu 02-Mar-23 13:34:22

You are not stuck with brexit.it was voted for and many many of us still support it and no we don’t want closer union either Thankyou .

Zoe65 Thu 02-Mar-23 13:38:01

Most people can’t stand Obrien .extreme left wing idiot .everyone I know switched him off after nick Ferrari s programme.

Zoe65 Thu 02-Mar-23 13:39:47

Really .i have no friend who would vote remain or did vote that way.you clearly mix in strange circles .

Oh dear, I feel that you are going to be disappointed.

Zoe65, while you are of course entitled to your views, please stop using 'most people' and 'left wing idiot'. Can I point out that Brexiteer doesn't = right wing, and Remainer doesn't =left wing, there are many Tory MPs who are not supporters of Brexit.

While you ponder this, put your mind to producing a list of benefits of leaving, this left wing idiot is intrigued, because she can't see any.

So, the weather in Spain and Morocco is responsible for the lack of fresh fruit and veg in the UK and, according to some sources, also in Europe.

Last week I went to my local Grand Frais in Perigueux. The counters and shelves were groaning with fresh fruit and veg and also meat and fish. Several varieties of apples and tomatoes. Also several varieties of citrus fruits including oranges amère and cedrat for making marmalade. These last two came from Spain and Italy - no problem caused by cold weather or snow.

I wished that I had a camera with me so that I could photo the shelves and post on here. But then I thought that would be rubbing salt into an open wound.

Dinahmo Thu 02-Mar-23 13:56:22

Zoe65 That's strange - about your friends. All of my friends are Remainers and several of them listen to James O'Brien. O'Brien's listeners have increased over the past year or so.

'Strange circles' are those who are in a very clear and small minority now.

How old will you be in 50 years time?

Your ACs?

Your GCs?

And you do realise of course that fruit and veg is just a blip. When checks for imports will be finally implemented by UK later this year- there will be a lot more shortages. And 'turnips' will just not be able to replace them!

Are you prepared to go with life-saving medicines? What about your family?

Are you prepared to see even more water pollution, and shortages of drinking water, because we can't access purification chemicals.

More industries and businesses closing as supply chains will break-down even more significantly than now.

You seem to have NO idea of the consequences.

The vote on Brexit was very close to 50/50. So when people speak of 'The people voted' or 'The country voted' that is far from the truth. And around 8 million didn't vote at all.

If the referendum had happened a few days earlier or later the result could have been differently.

I accepted the results of the referendum as soon as they were announced, even if it was not the result I wanted.

Zoe and her ilk could do with showing a little humility and realise that any changes should be based on what the majority of people want and if on balance that is a Brexit that is closer than she would prefer, well she should accept it.

It is strange how brexit has revealed what inherent bullies many people on both sides of the fence are, and how many of them are on GN.

Hopefully.

No-one knew what Brexit would be- NO-ONE. Many forms of Brexit could have been chosen, to protect our place in Single Market, for instance. As many had promised at the time.

And remember that the Electoral Commission found so many faults with the campaign and the Vote, that had it been 'for real' instead of advisory- they would have cancelled it as fraudulent.

Fleurpepper Thu 02-Mar-23 16:20:55

Betty was wise. 50 years?!?

I was pretty sure by the following logic

When a partnership breaks up both parties go their separate ways.
When you leave a club you don’t expect better terms as a non member
After 40 yrs of membership many laws have to be changed.
The leave campaign was lies from start to finish, because they were ignoring business advisors.

I don’t gloat about being right, I’m just so disappointed.

varian Thu 02-Mar-23 18:17:45

I have never heard any gloating about being right.

Only sadness and sometimes anger about what we have lost by the power of lies.

Fleurpepper Thu 02-Mar-23 18:39:09

Remainers have been insulted in the worst possible way, and suffered from gloaters on speed, and worse.

varian Thu 02-Mar-23 18:42:35

54% of people in the UK now think brexit was a mistake.

What is wrong with the other 46%?

dragonfly46 Thu 02-Mar-23 18:47:50

Our only friends who voted leave told us that they did it because they are wealthy and they have no children so don’t care what happens to the country when they are gone! And it will keep the bxxxxy foreigners out!
Needless to say I find it hard to still be their friend.

Well, I read lots of gloating about being right on GN, plenty of posters telling those of us disappointed at the result that:

we lost, get over it
if we liked EU so much, why didn't we move there
we were traitors
it was all going to be wonderful

It was not pleasant.

Only half of them or even less now (circa 23%) still support Brexit.
