Hello 👋
Just that. A straw poll.
It would be interesting to see the lay of the land with this.
See how it goes…

I don't think people realise how nasty it sounds when they say things like Why don't you just emigrate then?

I guess it's because "pi$$ off" is forbidden on GN.

Was it Groucho Marx who allegedly said "I Don’t Want to Belong to Any Club That Will Accept Me as a Member"?

Funnily enough, I happen to think the UK is my club. Maybe I (and people who think like I do) should be making the rules. I'm happy enough to tolerate other views, but maybe people who don't like it should be the ones who emigrate.

One of the saddest comments directed at me: "This is how we do things over here. If you don't you should go somewhere else."

As someone else said, there's a word for that. How does it affect all the royalists if the rest of us simply don't celebrate?

nanna8 Mon 24-Apr-23 07:55:47

A bit of a ring to it, isn’t there?
Don’t celebrate- emigrate. Could almost be a political slogan. A rather nasty one but then a lot of them are.

BlueBelle Mon 24-Apr-23 08:16:10

The more I read about their riches and ‘belongings’ the further I get from liking or admiring the Royal Family It was just a minimal don’t really care too much but fast turning into a ‘don’t want you’
Nothing to do with Charles, I think him and Camilla are ok and as good as any, I know it’s completely against the grain but whilst I admired the Queen for her longevity I never felt any adoration for her as so many do
If they didn’t leech off the country so much I might have more time for them is it really any different to the ‘let them eat cake’ times

Thank you for your apology Volver3 accepted.

Please check, it was NOT me who said you should move to another country.

I know. But you agreed with the person who did.

Growstuff: "I always thought we were supposed to have a reputation for tolerance".

I think we do. But I also think we tolerate things we clearly should not. Inequality is one of them.

Digressing from the thread title, but I started watching ‘The Real Crown’ last night on ITVX.

Five episodes, the real story about the House Of Windsor.

Some unseen footage, and not all fawning over the Royals.

I enjoyed the first episode, and look forward to the remainder.

Meh.
If it’s a nice day I’ll be out in the garden, and I’ll watch the highlights on the news later.

It seems to me that many people will just do their own thing. They don't necessarily object to the coronation; they get a day off. I shan't be watching it. What it signals to me is that the royals and others prefer living in the past.

I think it's known as tradition.

NanKate Mon 24-Apr-23 12:06:45

Volver typical of me. I never read everything in its entirety and jumped to the bit about Pimms and Celebration, which is more my style. But I understand why you thought I was agreeing to that statement. As my English teacher would say ‘Kate read the whole thing !’

Greta Mon 24-Apr-23 12:17:24

Traditions and practices aren't set in stones. We also move with the times.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 24-Apr-23 12:20:28

Apparently there will be a lot of changes from the Queen’s coronation. New traditions as well as old. Liking tradition is not living in the past.

😉

I have no problem with a glass of Pimms!

Greta Mon 24-Apr-23 12:51:31

I agree with you there, Germanshepherdsmum, nothing wrong with liking traditions. Some of them. I actually think we could create some more bank holidays to celebrate or mark events.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 24-Apr-23 13:06:37

Yes, we’re a long way down the bank holiday league table!

Yes indeed. How about the middle of October-because it’s the middle of October, or November 23-to promote entente cordiale with our US members.

Callistemon21 Mon 24-Apr-23 15:08:46

We really do need a bank holiday (or two) in the autumn.
It's a long stretch from August to Christmas.

All Saints Day?
Harvest Festival?
Apple Day?

silverlining48 Mon 24-Apr-23 15:14:18

According to my diary we have the fewest number of bank holidays of all the countries listed. We have 8, most have about 10/12 and Japan is the winner with 15!
A day in October woukd be most welcome, and we would still be at the bottom.

Would you believe BBC London is asking. Should We Abolish the Monarchy? And Jeremy Vine on 5 this morning is asking the same. It's to do with the polling where the young mainly favour an elected Head of State. Australia getting together groudon't know what relevance king Charles has in their country. They go democracy not monarchy themed events across the nation for supporters to gather in person and have their voice heard.

Grany Tue 25-Apr-23 10:09:31

I should do a word check before send.
