I, am absolutely horrified after seeing today's 'cartoon' in the times which has been posted on Face Book. It depicts the Crucifixions of the current 1st Minister of Scotland, his predecessor and her husband. I am not a relative of these 3 nor even a close friend, but I do know them personally - all lovely kind and caring people - they do not deserve this. Also an insult to Christians on this, the holiest day in the calendar. In addition, it seems to be lacking the basic requirement of a cartoon, i,e, It is not funny. Any last vestige of decency or respect oot the windae.

I guess it’s meant to be a political satire and actually on their side?
Very bad taste tho.

Namsnanny Sat 08-Apr-23 13:55:22

Charlie Hebdo comes to mind.

FannyCornforth Sat 08-Apr-23 13:58:44

It was a reference to Life of Brian’s ‘Always look on the bright side of life’ scene.
I’ll see if I can find it…

FannyCornforth Sat 08-Apr-23 13:59:48

And it was in yesterday’s Times, not today’s

One of their cartoonists is very poor. Which one was this?

If the"state" had raided the home of the leading political party in ANY other country there would have been an outcry ...but hey its fine for it to happen here .
Its not PUBLIC money they are saying is missing its donations from members for the use OF the party !
Yet BILLIONS misappropriated by the BOjo circus and not a bloody word ,never mind tents in the garden or an overload of police !
Where IS Michelle Mone and her illgotten millions ....billions? Seems nobody is bothered about that!
If this nonsense had happened in any other country there would be an outcry...Ex FM's home raided and politically sensitive materials removed.Sounds a lot like the great dictators in WM to me with police "Scotland" dancing to their tune. All in the name of a union that never was

Here it is

FannyCornforth Sat 08-Apr-23 14:01:29

It’s Peter Brookes

Political cartoons don't have to be funny.
I'm not a Christian so not offended in the least about that.
The crosses are crosses of St Andrew so that's quite clever.
The reference of Life of Brian is clever too.
The SNP leadership in real life is being "crucified" by the press and everyone else, it seems.

I really don't know how I feel about it. I probably wouldn't have published it in the national MSM, if it was up to me.

I think the cartoon is saying something along the lines of

the SNP in real life is being crucified

as Volver posted

Surely that is sympathetic to SNP?

Also (as Volver pointed out) it is clever to base it on the life of Brian.

I don't care for it, but people can and should say what they like in a democracy.

maddyone Sat 08-Apr-23 14:58:46

I don’t like it. I think it’s inappropriate. I understand that it’s satire but that doesn’t make it acceptable in my opinion. I don’t like these kind of cruel satirical jokes about politicians and I feel it’s totally inappropriate at Easter, the most holy time in the Christian calendar. It’s probably offensive to many Christians. I find it mildly offensive as I will be in church tomorrow having never been inside a church since before Covid, apart from two funerals and also a carol service at my grandchildren’s school in New Zealand. If it’s offensive then it probably shouldn’t be there, although since I believe in freedom of speech and expression, I certainly wouldn’t ban it. I do wonder what the reaction would be if Allah was portrayed in such a way.

TwiceAsNice Sat 08-Apr-23 15:06:20

I don’t care about the political subtleties . I DO care that it is offensive to Christian’s, of which I am one. To a Christian Easter is our most holy festival and to mock the crucifixion is beyond the pale. It’s ok to mock Christians apparently other religions, particularly Moslems would not put up with it and why should they?

Blossoming Sat 08-Apr-23 15:08:11

I think it’s kind of tacky.

tickingbird Sat 08-Apr-23 15:11:14

It’s offensive and the reason they don’t mock Muslims is because they daren’t; nothing to do with respect.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 08-Apr-23 15:14:04

It’s disgraceful.

Granny23 Sat 08-Apr-23 15:19:38

You are surely aware that the current FM of Scotland IS Muslim?

Namsnanny Sat 08-Apr-23 15:20:20

exactly

volver3 Sat 08-Apr-23 15:22:04

The fact that its Easter is the point, I think.

Its not mocking Christians or the crucifixion and its not mocking Muslims.

Galaxy Sat 08-Apr-23 15:24:43

It's quite important to offend, and no one should be exempt from that.

Jaxjacky Sat 08-Apr-23 15:34:50

It doesn’t bother me and has more publicity because of this, many would’ve been unaware otherwise.

I saw the "X" as the voting X on a ballot paper, cleverly tied in with Easter and looking "on the bright side" being another clever link to politics and that most ridiculous of nonsense and satirical wit, Monty Python.

Galaxy is right. Being offended and the right to offend is actually a good thing. I am, however, not offended by it.
Volver is also right. I don't see it as mocking either.

Aveline Sat 08-Apr-23 16:04:07

I saw that cartoon and thought it was in very poor taste. I'm surprised that an editor would sanction its use.

Baggs Sat 08-Apr-23 16:14:51

Shocking. Poor taste. But a good cartoon. All these things can be true at once.

Shocking and poor taste are the whole point of political cartoons. I often really dislike the Times cartoons but I believe in freedom of expression so I just move on swiftly after seeing one.

Dinahmo Sat 08-Apr-23 16:18:13

I wonder how many people on here would now ban "A Life of Brian". And how about Dave Allen - a brilliant comic but also one who made fun of the Catholic Church.
