Senior Tories want Braverman to stop her racist rhetoric

They are worried that her rhetoric will put off swing voters, as well as ruin the image of the Tory party.

I think that boat sailed months ago.

I think many people including myself think she has got a point.
I live in an area where we are flooded my migrants in hostels, hotels and now ex university accommodation.
The infrastructure cannot cope.
It is not fair on the migrants themselves or the local population.

Braverman seems to think as she's from an immigrant background and a Person of Colour herself it gives her license to say what she likes.

She's positioning herself as a darling of the Right with an eye on a future leadership contest - loathsome woman IMO.

FannyCornforth Fri 14-Apr-23 09:50:27

Alistair Campbell recently said something along these lines.

He said that the Tories aren’t trying to solve the migrant problem;
they are choosing to capitalise on it.

I think that he’s absolutely spot on

Maybe as a woman of colour and from an immigrant background herself she feels free to speak up without any fear of being thought a racist. There’s always another way to look at things.

Baggs Fri 14-Apr-23 10:05:06

And we all trust Alistair Campbell implicitly, don't we? says Baggs thinking of Labour voters putting signs in their windows saying "Not in my name" when we invaded Iraq.

Riverwalk Fri 14-Apr-23 10:11:29

I can't stand Campbell and don't have to have any trust in him to agree with his opinion on something. On this occasion I think he's right.

The Tories are responsible for the huge backlog on dealing with asylum seekers and immigration in general - it's been all on their watch.

FannyCornforth Fri 14-Apr-23 10:33:11

In my eyes, it’s irrelevant who said it and whether I ‘trust’ them or not.

If it was Nigel Farage who said it, I’d agree.

Eh? But people with brown skin can be racist too.

Baggs Fri 14-Apr-23 10:36:28

I agree that the govt doesn't seem to have been really trying on the migrant problem so far. I'm willing to give Braverman a little benefit of the doubt for now though. The fact that she's annoying her own side as well as opposing ones says something – maybe not much but something and she hasn't had much time yet. It's a complex problem she's trying to address.

Valid point about trusting Campbell, Riverwalk. I still don't trust him on this though.

Haha! Tell that to critical race theorists!

Baggs Fri 14-Apr-23 10:39:08

That was not a deadly serious riposte.

growstuff Fri 14-Apr-23 10:39:57

No thanks Baggs. But it's true. The colour of a person's skin doesn't stop anybody being racist. Why should it?

growstuff Fri 14-Apr-23 10:40:25

PS. Just seen your follow up post. Phew!

westendgirl Fri 14-Apr-23 10:51:52

I cannot understand how Braverman got into this position.
When she was a barrister she would defend asylum seekers . Could the ERG be responsible for supporting someone who will side with them .She was after all the chairman of the ERG group.
I do not however think that her choice of language is at all appropriate. It is divisive , racist, not based on fact and they are right to be worried. It is no use thinking that racism is only between white skin and people of colour.
Braverman is using this rhetoric deliberately to keep herself in the headlines and show she's supporting the far right. She's aiming for the leadership.Well said Baroness Farsi.

Riverwalk Fri 14-Apr-23 10:57:03

Talking of Campbell and Farage... can't remember the name of the podcast but I heard someone comment that on an Irish TV programme Campbell had told Farage to take responsibility for something by saying

Own your own sh*it Nigel

Talk about pot, kettle, irony etc....

Both equally loathsome people - I've now twice used loathsome this morning - I need to get of my bum and run some errands!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 14-Apr-23 13:50:25

It is senior tories not just Farsi who are alarmed at Bravermans rhetoric, and who are pushing Sunak to take action and get rid of her.

Of course many other commentators think that her comments are racist (I think that there is no question) but she isn’t worried about them, it is her own party she has to deal with.

Oh and she has a reputation of being a mediocre lawyer.

NanKate Fri 14-Apr-23 14:03:09

What I would like to know is if/when the Labour Party get elected, what would be their plan to deal with the influx of thousands of migrants.

Forsythia Fri 14-Apr-23 14:05:59

Wouldn’t we all like to know the answer NanKate!

hallgreenmiss Fri 14-Apr-23 14:08:39

I think the racist element came in when she declared, incorrectly, that the Rochdale grooming gangs were predominantly Asian; they were not, the majority were white.

What has that got to do with a thread that’s specifically about Braverman’s approach to her job?

She reminds me of the class creep. Puts her hand up at every question, even when she doesn’t know the answer - she’s desperate to be teacher’s pet and will stop at nothing to be noticed.

Kim19 Fri 14-Apr-23 14:41:07

I've just heard on tv that there's a reshuffling in the offing.

Precisely. I think they are deliberately taking over hotels in prominent places and filling them with migrants to antagonise the local population. Mind you, local to me they are making a point of doing community work to keep themselves busy so the plan might start to backfire on them. However, the plan is working in that many people think it is the major problem facing this country. Which it isn’t.

I would sincerely hope that the Labour Party did not use racist rhetoric to convince people of the need to reduce migration..racist rhetoric not only tries to convince people of the small boats argument, but it also casts a shadow, as we have seen (the young girls and Asian men) with promoting racism throughout our country when we so separately need to ensure a good community spirit and fellowship.

Ah well, Campbell, odious man. He would say that wouldn't he, a pal of Blairs who opened the country to all and sundry.
