Will You Pledge Allegiance?

Apparently we are all supposed to stand up in front of our tellys and pledge allegiance to the King saying stuff like “ May the King live forever”
Will you me doing it? Me neither, I’ll be in the garden hopefully.
What does “pledge allegiance” even mean in the 21st century? Before royalist pile in, yes I do know it has its roots a few hundred years ago, and it’s taken from a Handel anthem , but , honestly , that’s no excuse is it? We’re not in the Brownies fgs.

Totally agree with you NanaDana, I will rejoice when the monarchy are no more. Amen to that.

Saggi Tue 02-May-23 13:19:55

I might volunteer at our local food bank …to help feed his people …..while the powers that be spend an obscene amount of money on this debacle!

Keeper1 Tue 02-May-23 13:19:35

My understanding is this has come from the Archbishop not Charles

hicaz46 Tue 02-May-23 13:17:37

I think Charles has seriously misjudged what modernising the monarchy means and and expecting people to pledge allegiance is archaic. I will most certainly not be pledging.

mollie11158 Tue 02-May-23 13:16:56

Probably not but there are people who will and that's their decision. Don't know why people are stressing over something the Archbishop SUGGESTED not DEMANDED. I'm sure our grans can find something more interesting to do if they want? Also if we want to watch that's our choice too isn't it?. Whether you're a royalist or not I think we can still all make our own decisions, we can all have an opinion without being nasty or trying to make their point of view more important! Enjoy the day whatever you do but no-one can make you do what you don't want to. Just like normal TV really, switch off if you're not interested.

PattyFingers Tue 02-May-23 13:15:32

Certainly NOT!
Despite having to unwillingly pay for it - I won't even watch it.

Well said @JuliaB (above)

grandMattie

eazybee

This thread is sooo predictable.
I shall.

I agree. I most likely shall.
I believe, despite all efforts, that the monarchy brings stability rather than the rocky route of republics…. Imagine President Boris!

Me too!

grandtanteJE65 Tue 02-May-23 13:15:12

As I am not a British citizen and therefore not one of King Charles III's subjects, I cannot legally swear allegiance to him.

The "around the world "idea can only apply ot British citizens living abroad or in a very restricted sense to some of the citizens of British Commonwealth countries.

JuliaB Tue 02-May-23 13:13:32

In a democracy he should be swearing allegiance to us!!

Yiayia70 Tue 02-May-23 13:13:00

NO!!! Who does he think he is

Lizzie44 Tue 02-May-23 13:12:01

Certainly not. What does it even mean - "true allegiance to your majesty"? It's mumbo jumbo and feels demeaning. I am a British citizen, not a subject. May watch TV coverage briefly (if it's raining) but had a belly-ful of the pomp last year with Jubilee and funeral. Presumably it's the same old dressing up boxes they'll be getting out of the royal cupboards.

JuliaB Tue 02-May-23 13:10:22

Cheered me up to read so much good sense from fellow-Grans 🙂👏

Charleygirl5 Tue 02-May-23 13:09:46

I am with Nannapat, no. I may have the TV on but I will not be watching it avidly.

Beeb Tue 02-May-23 13:06:27

As Gala said. It’s just an “ if you want to” so if you don’t want to, don’t do it. Nobody’s going to know or care if you do or you don’t.

biglouis Tue 02-May-23 13:04:58

The rich man in his castle
The poor man at his gate
God made them high and lowly
And ordered their estate

All things bright and beautiful ... tra la la

Moggycuddler Tue 02-May-23 13:03:10

I won't be watching any of it. Not into the Royal thing at all. The allegiance swearing is absurd. I'd rather put two fingers up to him/them.

Nannapat1 Tue 02-May-23 13:03:08

I am a supporter of the monarchy but it's a no from me.

NaughtyNantheRed Tue 02-May-23 13:00:37

Definitely not. I think the extremely wealthy royal family should stand up and say they want to see the end of food banks, that they want to see public/vital services like junior doctors and nurses in the NHS are rewarded properly, that they want to see an improvement in mental health services for young people (and everyone else), that they want a country where no child goes hungry, that they want a country where all children - not just the wealthy - have a wonderful education; where people are not homeless, that all have enough to be able to own a home of their own. It's no good for that lot to go & make speeches and support 'causes' then go back to their grace & favour homes where they are cushioned from what the rest of us are struggling with. No, no, no. My family have my allegiance, end of.

Mollygo Tue 02-May-23 12:58:22

Why would you think we live in a feudal society? That would mean you were obliged to pledge allegiance for fear of the outcome if you refused.
How do we know they don’t know about food banks.
So many people are as rich as Croesus, or even quite well off.
The majority of them do not do anything about the poverty of others.
If all the rich, not just the RF contributed, maybe we wouldn’t need food banks.

Grandma2002 Tue 02-May-23 12:56:33

No, I'm not
Would we have to do it US style with right hand over heart?

Sawsage2 Tue 02-May-23 12:53:16

No, might watch it on tv for an hour.

Grantanow Tue 02-May-23 12:50:06

Do we still live in a feudal society? Does Welby live on Earth? Don't they know about food banks and the cost of living when Charles is as rich as Croesus?

Tina10 Tue 02-May-23 12:47:55

I see no problem with my allegiance to the King. What possible harm can it do? To those who complain that the Royal Family costs us a fortune, I think the majority can afford £1.29 a week. Just think of the revenue that comes into the U.K. as a result of our pageantry. And who would want a political person as head of our country. We’ve already got that facility in the form of a Prime Minister.

Houndi Tue 02-May-23 12:47:05

Why has this not been put out to sponsorship. I am sure Netflix would have picked it up.When we have record homeless and food banks.I think it's obscene

Missiseff Tue 02-May-23 12:46:46

No.
