GG13 don’t think we have any spare boots to offer? Agree with you otherwise.
We still have boots they are just trained in modern warfare, which is more remote as opposed to the hand-to-hand, street-by-street fighting happening in Ukraine.
This is not a rerun of any previous Russia/Ukraine threads so please don't post about the pros/cons of the conflict etc.
According to the Metro the UK government is going to lend £2.5billion to the Ukraine. Just where is the money coming from? If we have a spare £2.5billion why isn't it being spent on education, social care, the NHS, housing etc. How can we have no money to spend on necessities in the UK yet we have vast amounts of money to loan to another country.

Of course we want to avoid boots on ground. Sending money and equipment is always preferable, imo, to boots on far off ground.
the personal taxation allowance has been frozed for years so people are paying more tax. Interest rates mean that many savers are now paying tax on savings as the tax free allowance of a grand has also been frozen. Wage increases for some professions such as nurses working overtime to make ends meet means that they end up in the 40% tax bracket. The government are giving local authorities less money YET somehow we as a country still manage to subsidise MP meals in the houses of Parliament. !
My OP stated that this was not a pro/cons of the war. I want to know where the money is coming from. Where is the magic money tree? If we have this money to loan/give away why are our children, vulnerable, sick and elderly still suffering from underinvestment.
It seems to me that this government has plenty of money for its pet projects/friends but nothing for the ordinary people of this country.

The Government of the day whatever their colour can raise funds by various means.
It raised £’s to pay furlough to people who’s jobs stopped overnight during the various lockdowns.
Indeed it did - and to help with fuel bills. Some people have just received another payment towards the increased cost of living. Memories are short and giving the government a good bashing is a popular hobby.

I'm not happy about it. It's just perpetuating the war and more people are dying needlessly. All wars end with peace talks so why can't this be persued now rather than later when more death and destruction has been wreaked upon both Ukrainians and Russians?
All wars might end in peace talks but not necessarily a Peace Treaty. North and South Korea only have a Ceasefire stopping them from crossing no man's land into each other's countries after 70 years.
Ukraine was never "Russia" it was part of the USSR. A land grab during the end of WW2 by Russia led by Stalin. Ukraine's grain was known as his gold. He starved the Ukranians.
Putin has stated that he wants back all the land that the USSR encompassed, which takes in a lot of countries and puts him near our doorstep again.
I am heartened by the show of support here for Ukraine. They are fighting for their liberty, freedom and their lives!
I’m financially supporting the effort when I can and read, listen everyday on the progress they’re making. If they don’t persevere and reclaim their land… Putin will go after my family’s home country next.
It’s a real nightmare and as MOnica so succinctly put it - they ARE fighting WW3 on our behalf.
Long live Ukraine!

Putin engaging in peace talks? Not in a million years.
North and South Korea only have a Ceasefire stopping them from crossing no man's land into each other's countries after 70 years
And now people in North Korea are starving.
Why can't we rid the world of these despots?

That was my immediate reaction, too.
'Peace' is not his end goal.

I keep telling people where the money comes from, but they refuse to believe me
It's just keystrokes on a keyboard. The Bank of England 'creates' the money to purchase government bonds and the Treasury gets the money. Which is then used for the purchase of armaments or whatever.
Basically, the government is borrowing from itself because the state owns the Bank of England...
I know MaizieD but many chose to believe a Countries economy is like a household’s.

Ukraine is fighting WW3 for us. We should pay for our defence.
This.
The whole thing is a very delicate diplomatic balance. If Ukraine falls, Pugin will become even more arrogant and emboldened, and then who's next?
Ukraine must be supported to overcome or its likely we will fighting a direct war in the not too distant aftermath of a Russian victory.
The needs of our very underfunded NHS, social services, education and prison & rehabilitation services will pale into insignificance at that point.

The money is coming from the government, no magic involved.

Absolutely. It’s been a terrible war (I know all wars are terrible) but it has been truly terrible. I’m with foxie, it should be a gift. British people have had huge help with their energy costs, and the poor have received extra help. Only yesterday £150 for more than six million people in this country. We should be behind this and be happy to give more. My God, they need all the help they can get.
I’m definitely of the same view as MOnica, GGravy and all others who have agreed. I fully support any aid we can give to Ukraine.
Wherever the money comes from it is the right thing to do for all our sakes.

why
Moldova, Chechnya, Georgia, Ukraine Crimea, London, MH17, Syria, Salisbury, Kazakhstan, Ukraine again ........
Where next?
We should give the money to Ukraine and it should be a gift.
Whatever we give as individuals or as a nation is not going to make a difference on the battlefield, it’s how far the US is willing to back Ukraine.
Personally I don’t think they will provide enough to win back the territory lost, neighbouring countries are holding back for their own defence if the conflict spreads.
Yes, I agree with Monica and Foxie48.
This is not just about us 'giving' money to Ukraine. Ukraine is fighting not just for their own sovereignty but for democracy.
The world is divided into areas ruled by dictatorships/despots with almost no personal freedoms or rights and other areas where democracy still reigns, which has many freedoms and basic human rights.
That's why the money is being found... it is also being found in the rest of Europe and beyond. We have a vested interest to protect our values and way of life.
But I agree this government do not look after our own interests and have a track record of squandering millions!
And yes it should be given freely, not be a loan.
I'd prefer that any money was spent helping people in this country, before other countries.
But, we have always found money for other people's conflicts, so I don't suppose it'll change.
Politicians love to grandstand on the world stage....🙄

That rather implies that you think the economy is run like a household budget - "the money" is not sitting in a pot or in a bank account, available to be spent on 'something.
Apart from anything else, most nations have a commitment towards aid for events like natural disasters and war. We are expected to contribute.
Funding of social and health services is not dependent on whether or not we contribute towards these events - it's purely ideological.
